'Sister Wives' Kody Brown Investigated For Felony Bigamy

Sister Wives Kody Brown Bigamy

SALT LAKE CITY — The family with four wives had hoped its participation on a TLC reality TV show would shed light on polygamy but is now the target of a bigamy investigation by Utah police.

"Sister Wives," which premiered Sunday, chronicles the life of 41-year-old advertising salesman Kody Brown, his four wives, 13 children and three stepchildren. The Browns, of Lehi, have said they hoped that the peek into their lives would help broaden the public's understanding of plural families.

Lehi police are investigating whether the family is violating bigamy laws in plain view on cable TV. Brown is only legally married to Meri but also calls three other women his spouses: Janelle, Christine and Robyn.

"...When we decided to do this show, we knew there would be risks," the Brown family said in a statement Tuesday. "But for the sake of our family, and most importantly, our kids, we felt it was a risk worth taking."

Most polygamist families practice in secret, but it has entered the national dialogue given its portrayal on the HBO scripted drama "Big Love." The modern Mormon church excommunicates members found engaged in the practice, which was disavowed by the church in 1890 as part of a push for Utah's statehood.

On a TLC ad for "Sister Wives," one wife says: "I think we're normal, and then I go out and then I'm like, 'Oh yeah, I can't tell anybody about my normal family.'"

Across Utah and parts of the western U.S., an estimated 38,000 self-described fundamentalist Mormons continue to believe and/or practice polygamy, believing it brings exaltation in heaven.

Over the past 10 years, Utah's historically insular polygamist community has worked to educate the public and state agencies about its culture. State agencies now better understand the unique aspects of polygamous culture and plural families are less hesitant to seek help when needed, Principle Voices co-founder Anne Wilde said.

The Brown family's decision to do a reality TV show was sort an extension of that education work, said Wilde, who knows the family well.

Although it is rarely prosecuted, bigamy is a third-degree felony in Utah, punishable by a prison term of up to five years. Under the Utah law, a person can be found guilty of bigamy through cohabitation, not just legal marriage contracts.

Lehi police said the evidence gathered from the probe will be turned over to the Utah County attorney's office for possible prosecution. A message left for Paul was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Utah last prosecuted a polygamist for bigamy in 2001. Tom Green, who was married to five women and drew the attention of Utah authorities after promoting his lifestyle on national TV talk shows, was convicted on bigamy, criminal nonsupport and child rape charges. He spent six years in prison and was released in 2007.

The Utah attorney general's office has investigated the state's secretive polygamous communities, but focused its efforts on cases involving allegations of abuse, sexual assault and fraud, not bigamy.

"It has been our office's position not to pursue cases of bigamy between consenting adults," the attorney general's spokesman, Scott Troxel, said Tuesday. "We want to use our resources wisely."

Wilde said she fears an investigation into the Brown family will instill fear in plural families about going public with their lives.

"If it really goes to a court situation, then our people are going to go right back into isolation," she said.

Honestly, I don't think TLC is far away from being the Jerry Springer channel. I used to like all of the educational shows they broadcast, but now they seem to want to show things that will create drama. They ruined LA Ink by taking the focuss off the tattoos and on the cat fighting. They ruined the Gosslin's marriage (or maybe it was Kate)... and now this slop. Bring back the learning and get rid of the drama!

100% agree with this whole statement. My fiancee and I watch a lot of TLC, and when we started watching this show, it was kind of ridiculous. People for or against polygamy, doesn't matter. When I found out that 1, they live in Utah, and 2, they are Mormon, pretty much explains why this is their religion. It "seems" like the family as a whole is doing well, but then again, it "seemed" like Jon and Kate were doing well also. How can you be "in love" with 4 (or more) different women at once? And more than anything, why are the women perfectly fine with 100+ wives, but he starts dating 1 women, it's the most sinful/horrible/hurtful thing to them.....

They have the right to live there lives as they pleased just like us, If they arent bothering you then leave them alone, jacequline you have no idea what your talking about.. so get off the article, poligamist is a religion just like us christians and do you see us getting charged with a crime just of what we believe, GO BROWNS!!!!

I can't believe how closed minded some people are. Do I "get" how 4 women can share one man. NO WAY...but is it my business? Absolutely not. I don't get how a lot of people do a lot of things but that's the beauty of the human race..we are all wired a bit differently. Each of the wives has admitted they have jealousy issues and each one says they believe that it makes them better people to have to work through those issues. Why is it not their right to do that? Kody obviously has some serious ADHD going on which is why he can probably juggle all 4 women. More power to him if he is able too. This lifestyle is surely not for me but if it makes them happy then "live and let live".

As far as their children are concerned, well they seem happy, healthy and normal. Madison, one of the teenage girls even point blank said that she does not want to share her future husband..and all the wives and Kody said that's here choice and her life and that's fine. They have even said they don't care if their kids are religious..as long as they are happy and doing what makes them happy in this life.

I wonder if the non-legally-married wives collect welfare or other state support as "single mothers" similar to the "spiritually married" women (and young children!) in FLDS communities.

I'm sorry, this is not a live and let live issue. I think the entire practice of polygamy is inherently a women's and children's rights issue. What did you think the last time you read about some poor Afghani 12 year girl whose parents are forcing her to marry a 55 year old man with 2 wives already? Now imagine she has blonde hair and lives in Arizona because she does. The same cultural, social and religious beliefs the Browns have are the underpinnings to child sexual abuse happening in FLDS and other communities. Read into it. It's a human rights injustice and we look the other way in the name of "religious tolerance" and "anti-government" sentiments.
04:14 PM on 10/18/2010
I'm wondering where you are getting the idea that they are collecting welfare. Three of the 4 women work as does Kody.... I think you should check your sources on that.

I agree that there can be some major brain washing, child abuse, etc. in some polygimist groups, but it doesn't seem any of that is happening here. All these women are of legal age and were when they married him. The kids all seem happy and healthy and they have free will to decide if they want to grow up and live in the lifestyle or not. And to be honest, why would having multiple adults who love you and love each other be bad for children? It's better than divorced families where parents hate each other and use the kids to get back at their ex...which happens a lot more than anyone would care to admit.

Is it ideal for me? No. I think it's unfair for 4 women to have to compete and share the affections of one man. However, they all seem as just as happy if not more happy than most monogomous people. Who are you or I or anyone else to judge them for wanting to live this way? This isn't hurting you and it isn't hurting me.

Our police time and our tax dollars would be better spent worrying about something that matters in the big scheme of things. Like, oh, homelessness, lack of health insurance, human rights, child abuse, etc.

Jacqueline, This IS a live and let live issue, which is EXACTLY why you have to distort it in order to condemn it.
You're trying to compare this to the forced marriage of a 12 year-old girl to a 55 year-old man yet nobody in this show is either a minor or forced into marrying Mr. Brown.
It would be like someone condemning gay marriage because of the spate of sex-abuse scandals in the church.

If you're against polygamy, don't marry a man with three wives.
02:17 PM on 10/18/2010
I wonder how people would feel about this situation if there were an equal number of husbands and wives in the household who were all consenting adults? Would it make it more acceptable for people?
08:26 AM on 10/18/2010
Laws & Rules are put in place to protect people. The women having real issues with jealousy. That's a real emotion. The struggles within the unit. Even though the show did not highlight the children. I can guarantee there are serious problems of the same nature. The women & children should not have to share. Kody Brown should be prosecuted. If prosecuting him causes others to go into hiding...so be it! It is wrong, it is ridiculous! Hey Kody you are not multiplying love you are dividing it! Duh!
07:22 PM on 10/18/2010
So, if a woman is jealous of her husband, the state should arrest the man and prosecute him????
Welcome to the United States of Feminist Dictatorship

You say that laws and rules are put in place to protect people. Well, if that's the case, I guess we can bring back slavery, ban interracial marriage and repeal the 19th amendment.
10:15 PM on 10/16/2010
How is it polygamy if only Meri is his legal wife? The other women just happen to be having his children and letting him sleep in their bed every 4th nite----man has he got them all buffaloed!
I call him an adulterer. What a bunch of stupid women!
11:17 PM on 10/11/2010
There is abolutely NO REASON for this type of marriage to be illegal in modern-day America. Just like the bans on interracial marriage in the past, the anti-polygamy laws are discriminatory and bigoted, not to mention out-dated and ridiculous. It's high time that state governments stop persecuting polygamists and move to legalize and formally recognize polygamy. Separate but equal is inherently unequal.
04:46 AM on 11/26/2010
Ian. Are you a polygaist? You sure sound like one. Methinks you doth protest too much.
11:13 PM on 10/10/2010
Why should it be ok for a man to have 4 wives but not ok for a man to have 1 husband?
10:25 PM on 10/11/2010
piehi...I don't know if you have been reading the newspapers lately but gay marriage has been legalized in at least six states. Maybe you should have asked that question in reverse. If it's ok for a man to marry another man or for a woman to marry another woman, why shouldn't it be ok for a man to marry four or more women?
08:32 PM on 10/22/2010
It should be in all states.

TLC is aiding and abetting the crime of bigamy, and should be held accountable along with the "husband" and the "wives" They should all go to trial and be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The state of Utah says they do not like to bring the polygamists to trial, they just focus on crimes of abuse, sexual assault and fraud. This in itself is ridiculous. If they do not enforce the laws on their books, what's to stop a murderer from suing the state for enforcing a law against him when they do not enforce other laws???? This is one for the supreme court to ponder.
10:00 PM on 10/11/2010
Red Russet, I hate to tell you this but the anti-polygamy laws you are demanding that the state enforce are so archaic and outmoded, they cannot possibly be enforced in this day and age. It's 2010!! We don't prosecute people for fornication or adultery anymore. Where does the state get off telling a man how many women he can sleep with, live with or have children with? Take off your tin-foil pilgrim hat and stop asking the state to enforce ridiculously out-dated laws.
12:58 PM on 10/18/2010
Well said Ian - but I don't think you're wrong Red. If the law is on the books - enforce it. But this law, and many others, need to be purged. There are so many laws on the books that are outdated (I think it's still legal in NC for a man to rape his wife) as well as odd - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/02/17-ridiculous-laws-still_n_481379.html#s71253. In most areas, resources for law enforcement are limited - and we need to spend them well. I would rather police-folk spend their time arresting murderers than adults that are consenting to plural marriage.

Since he believes "love should be multiplied", I wonder how would he feel about his wives marrying other men?
02:58 AM on 10/05/2010
Exactly. When women are encouraged to have multiple husbands maybe then I will be more accepting of this practice. But as of now I see it as a made up (years ago but nonetheless created by man) religious belief that benefits just the man -- the housework is done, the kids are taken care of -- his biggest concern is which woman he would rather sleep with tonight. I cannot believe these women would ask for more sister wives when it makes them feel sorry for themselves and wish he would treat them as special as he is treating the new one. I think this is really demeaning to women and feel sorry for the all ladies in this situation. I can see how polygamy would be fun for a man but I don't see how these woman and others that practice polygamy can convince themselves its fine. Ugh! I could go on and on but it won't change anything.. I just wish the woman (of polygamy) put more value in themselves.
01:01 PM on 10/18/2010
Not bad points Holly. But if that lifestyle makes people happy, I think they should be allowed to live it - legally and in full view of the world. To your point - how could they really be happy? I don't know. But I think the answer lies in educating them - and giving them all the facts so they can make informed choice as opposed to making their choice illegal.
11:08 PM on 10/10/2010
If he believes love should be multiplied then why is his divided between 4 women????

So, where's the woman who gets 5 husbands?
03:40 PM on 10/07/2010
That was on another show called strange sex. A woman had two or three men and a child with one of them.
10:19 PM on 10/16/2010
I saw that---was sorta weird-at least I don't think she called them her "husbands"----just her men-lol!
06:02 PM on 10/04/2010
sister wives email

I feel as long as those people are happy and are not committing molestation and not hurting anyone then the police needs to leave them alone. The Browns are just expressing there right to the freedom of religion according to our constitution of the United States. Kody and his wives are sharing there story and there religion to help educate people about a religion that practices poligomy; as long as there in accordance to the law; then they should be left alone. They have the right to share there story the same as the Gosslins. People are curious about how other famlies function with so many wives and children, and about the doctoriun of the church. There family seems happy and seems to function very well with all the people under the same roof. It seems like they have very good communication skills and they all love each other, then they need to be able to tell there story.

Putting kids on TV like this is borderline child abuse

Not borderline. In this case it is a crime, because by participating they are being forced to aid and abet the crime of polygamy. According to the law, TLC and all participants should be prosecuted and receive prison terms. The children should go to foster care. If the states do not enforce the laws on their books, the federal government should step in and instruct them to do so.
04:52 AM on 11/26/2010
I agree. I think this is absolutely an abuse.
09:43 AM on 10/04/2010
Surely Mr Wonderful and his flashy sportscar, fake grin and trying too hard to be cool
demeanor (so practical for a man with 13 kid's don't you think) is too wonderful for a mere 4 women? I can't wait for the one night stands to crawl out of the woodwork.
01:30 AM on 10/04/2010
i do not condone this family - i think it is (bogus) religious extremism.... but as long as he only applied for a marriage license for one of these (stupid) women, he has broken no laws.....
11:10 PM on 10/10/2010
He has broken laws though, the law isn't just legal marriage it's cohabitation and he is living with 4 women calling them all his wife, that is breaking the law.
10:14 PM on 10/11/2010
piehi, where did you get the idea that cohabitation was illegal??
