TripAdvisor's 10 Emerging Destinations Worldwide (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 09/28/10 06:15 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:50 PM ET

Good old TripAdvisor. Among all the lists they have, there is one that caught our eye the most: The website's list of the 10 emerging destinations around the world.

We're certainly curious about these towns and cities--the endless-looking beach at Nairn and the laid-back look of Todos Santos. Most notably, two Italian and two United Kingdom destinations made the list.

What do you think? What the places that you consider emerging destinations?

I place no value on anything coming from Trip Advisor and I certainly wouldn't go with any of their recommendations. There are enough Lonely Planet zombies running all over the globe ruining 'new' hot spots. We don't really need another mega travel corporation doing the same thing.

Isn't it more fun finding your own secret spots anyway?

Are they kidding?? Is this a joke? I have been to some of those places, and the only thing they are emerging from are long tourism comas and century long slumber. I am astonished....Weymouth???? Wow! That place hasn't been cool since 1880, and it wasn't even very cool then.

"Are they kidding?? Is this a joke?"

No. It is called emerging destinations isn't it. Not established tourism resorts.

Should have gone in Dec-Feb. Very cool then.

It looks very picturesque and if you could hire a boat to go sailing I'm sure it would be fun.

My dad was in Garmisch-Partenkirchen many years ago but the SS on the other end of town kept trying to cancel his hotel reservation.

Porto Cervo an emerging destination???????
Costa Smeralda (Sardinia) is one of the most beautiful place on earth and is well known not just by the Italians. Porto Cervo in summertime is swarming with VIP and wannabe (unfortunately), huge yacht boats are found everywhere. I was used to go there in the 80's and was a true paradise before becoming very popular. If you can try to go in June or September when everybody has left, the place is really magical.

What about Buffalo, N.Y? I hear they've done some tremendous things there. Goodness, who wouldn't want to see the home of Promo the Robot and Erve Weinstein?

Traverse City, MI
Islamorada, FL
Rohnert Park, CA
Wiscasset, ME
Deal, NJ
The Amanas, Iowa
Strasburg, PA
Carlsbad, CA

Marlin, TX

Not really, but it is one of the creepiest places I've been. As a repeat customer, I can say it's worth the trip.

Marfa, TX.

The Chinati Foundation, founded by 20th Cent artist Donald Judd, is fantastic. And the mysterious floating lights in the sky just outside of town are not to be missed.

Istanbul is always wonderful. Even better at the end of Ramadan. Fortunately we can get round trip tickets for 69 Euro. Can drive it in a very hard day.

I found Belize overpriced and fairly boring. Mexico has better beaches, better ruins a more interesting culture and is actually affordable.

Weymouth will host the sailing and water sports in the 2012 Olympics.  It is quite interesting, in a slightly faded but pleasant seaside holiday town sort of way, and the Isle of Portland is dramatic, as is Chesil Beach, but the one twoilane road into this town from the east (and London)  is a nightmare.

Personally, I would have picked Purbeck/Swanage/Studland/Sandbanks, twenty miles to the east, by Poole Bay (itself quite amazing) - just breathtaking.  But then again, I have a home there., so please don't all come at once!!
05:50 AM on 09/29/2010
Don't go for a couple of years as it is full of roadworks in preparation for the Olympics, but would agree that the area around Weymuff is stunning, but don't tell too many people or it will be overrun with grockles!!

I'm assuming part of what you like about your secret places is the people there. You don't like them enough to want them to do well?

All my work came from referrals and I had a few clients like that. Made me feel lousy when they said they were my great friends too.
