U.S. Sanctions 8 Iranian Officials For Human Rights Abuses

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration stepped up pressure against Iran's government on Wednesday, slapping financial and travel sanctions on eight Iranian officials and accusing them of taking part in rampant human rights abuses.

Under an executive order signed this week by President Barack Obama, the State and Treasury departments jointly announced the sanctions that target Iranians who "share responsibility for the sustained and severe violation of human rights in Iran," notably after last year's disputed presidential elections.

At a State Department news conference, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said it was the first time the United States has imposed sanctions on Iranians for violating human rights. The step adds another layer to already heavy U.S. sanctions on Iran, which in the past have been imposed over the country's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

"On these officials' watch or under their command, Iranian citizens have been arbitrarily arrested, beaten, tortured, raped, blackmailed and killed," Clinton said. "Yet the Iranian government has ignored repeated calls from the international community to end these abuses."

The move bars the eight Iranians from entering the United States, blocks any of their U.S. assets and prohibits Americans from doing business with them.

Although none of the eight is believed to have substantial assets in U.S. jurisdictions, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said he expects foreign financial institutions to stop doing business with them.

"We have found that when we single out individuals and expose their conduct, banks, businesses and governments around the world respond by cutting off their economic and financial dealings with these individuals, these institutions, these businesses," Geithner said.

Among the eight Iranians targeted Wednesday is Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of Iran's powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and one his top deputies, Hossein Taeb. Jafari is already subject to U.S. sanctions related to Iran's nuclear program.

The administration said that forces under the command of Jafari and Taeb participated in beatings, murder and arbitrary arrests of peaceful protesters in the aftermath of the June 2009 Iranian election.

Also named were Iranian Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi, four current and former police chiefs and prosecutors, and Sadeq Mahsouli, currently Iran's minister of welfare and social security.

Mahsouli was minister of the interior at the time of the June 2009 election, and in that role had authority over all police forces and Interior Ministry security agents, the administration's announcement said.

"His forces were responsible for attacks on the dormitories of Tehran University on June 15, 2009, during which students were severely beaten and detained," the joint Treasury and State statement said.

Clinton said that despite President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent claims that human rights were respected and protected in Iran, the situation has worsened since the elections. She noted that this week alone, two reformist political parties and two newspapers were shut down.

"The steady deterioration in human rights conditions in Iran has obliged the United States to speak out time and time again," Clinton said.

The White House portrayed the sanctions as a reflection of U.S. efforts to support peaceful change in Iran.

"The United States will always stand with those in Iran who aspire to have their voices heard," a White House statement said.

This woman should be asked to explain what she means by Human Rights and also to define Hypocrisy. She bleats on about one at every stopover and ignores the other. The US and Israel are responsible for more human rights and international law violations than anyone else.

Meanwhile, Iran opens its airspace to Chinese combat aircraft. - Not a very subtle message to ....

Take a good look at Hillary's picture in this article; an angry, tired wretch of a person, oozing vindictiveness. That is an image that describes America today.

And what is really upsetting is that the only place you will see this reported is on this website - nothing on NYT, WaPo, national TV news that I have seen.

Email, call, write, fax your senators and representatives and also Obama! I did that yesterday after I read the article about the execution. Of course, be prepared to be sued by the federal government - the DoJ is having a heyday with its lawsuits - or you might be put on a watch list. As far as I am concerned, the administration is so busy kissing Israel's bu** that they can't look up and see what harm they are doing to our country and our people.

"We have met the enemy and he is us"? Well, only while we have waay too many right-of-returners whose genuine loyalties lie in certain other countries other than here in the U.S. where they profit and control for that other state, and also only while George Bush and his cronies are still swanning around on the loose. Take care of those two problems, and you take care of a lot of "the enemy" right there.

I hope this is not gonna be the last time that the human rights violations is the focal point of the sanctions. It is bad enough that this was the first time! How much more human rights we have to see in order to bring the issue in the focal point of sanctions?

Ok....Hillary, today a Coup was initiated against the left wing government of Ecuador. We had Zelaya removed to further right wing interests in the region and now we are doing that in Ecuador. Anyone who is a supporter of Chavez. She stands up to Iran but is funding these right wing coups. Change we cant believe in. We need to start a new party, NOW!

Thought about letting this midterm election slide, but have decided to go ahead and vote - but for either Green or Libertarian. Will check out their platforms and programs first, of course, but neither would probably be worse that the two parties we have.

I can't help but think as this country's power continues to wane the day will come international sanctions will be applied to U.S. official for *their* abuses.

Aren't there CIA operatives under indictment for kidnapping in Italy? ...No, I see they were actually *convicted* of their crimes in Nov. 2009. So why no international sactions against U.S. officiallysuntil these criminals are turned over to Italian authorities?

I mean other people might call us hypocrites you know!

So Obama is going to get tough on those responsible for torturing prisoners of war (aka enemy combatants) now too? Nope, that hypocrite won't.

Targeting Iranian officials for the human rights abuses of Iranians and slapping financial and travel sanctions of them, seems a bit dramatic. So we punish people in other countries for something that is being done to their own people. This would carry a lot more weight and clout if we punish American officials equally for heinous acts they have perpetrated in the name of this nation. We need to clean up our own mess instead of trying to supplant others’ values.

It seems as though we are going down the same path as we did in Iraq. First, we create the outrage that human rights abuses are occurring. Then we come up with other scenarios to anger the nation. Then we eventually invade. Personally, I am outraged and disgusted when human rights abuses occur in any form and that includes the abuses our officials have performed in the name of this nation.
