Secretive 'Super PAC' Takes Out New Anti-DeFazio Ad Buy, Less Than A Week After High-Profile Confrontation

First Posted: 09/29/10 05:09 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:50 PM ET

The secretive Concerned Taxpayers of America (CTA) is out with a new $79,000 ad buy against Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), bringing its total spending in Oregon's 4th congressional district race to more than $165,000 -- four times what DeFazio's opponent has spent.

The new spending comes less than a week after DeFazio had a high-profile confrontation with one of CTA's staffers. On Friday, DeFazio, accompanied by journalists from The Huffington Post and The Washington Post, attempted to visit the Capitol Hill headquarters of the political action committee to ask it to make its donors public. The man who answered the door denied being associated with CTA, even though subsequent research revealed that he works for the group's treasurer and is on the organization's voice mail message.

CTA began running television ads against DeFazio on Sept. 21 and has injected a significant amount of cash in the race. Its first media buy amounted to $89,000 with an ad attempting to depict DeFazio as a puppet of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Cali.) and urging voters to back his opponent, Republican Arthur Robinson. An editorial in The Register-Guard in Eugene, Oregon, called it a "a reach," since DeFazio has "opposed several of the speaker's top legislative priorities."

CTA is one of the new "super PACs" that are allowed to raise and spend money in unlimited amounts, thanks to recent court rulings. These groups must operate independently from political parties and campaigns, and while they must disclose their donors to the Federal Election Commission, campaign finance advocates argue that they're able to largely operate in the shadows. "They're springing up like wildfire because they can take corporate money in huge amounts and while they have to file disclosure forms, the next time those reports are due isn't until the middle of October, so they're really able to spend money for a really critical part of the election season without having to disclose," said Lisa Gilbert, democracy advocate at U.S. PIRG

Robinson, DeFazio's little-known opponen, who is most famous for disputing manmade global warming, has said that he has no idea who is behind CTA, although he's "delighted to have their help."

DeFazio told The Huffington Post that he believes Robinson's outspoken advocacy on behalf of conservative causes is the reason CTA is going after him so aggressively. "This is a small group of individuals, unknown, undisclosed, with obviously very, very deep pockets who have decided to campaign just to attack me and help my opponent, who obviously supports their radical extreme right-wing libertarian agenda," he said. "He has run in the highest circles of the right-wing libertarian whack jobs for decades. He's well known, he's a prominent national speaker on the homeschooling movement, he wants to abolish public education, and he is their front person with an organization and a so-called petition against global climate change, and he himself has [said he has] definitively proven climate change theory and knows it's a hoax to enslave the American people. I mean, this sounds like stuff that wouldn't go anywhere, but with hundreds of thousands -- or millions -- of dollars behind it in a swing district like mine, you don't know where it will go."

The Huffington Post contacted both CTA Treasurer Jason Miller and the Robinson campaign, but we did not receive a response.

If the argument is "disappointment" in Obama; remind voters that he HAS worked very hard for Americans since the day he took office..... and that he would have accomplished even more if not for the immature and UN-AMERICAN "Just Say No" Republican mentality.

President Obama is the most honorable and intelligent person we will ever have as our president.

Yes. And by this last court ruling is how the USA will die. Not suddenly, but by a thousand cuts.

See how fast it will happen, for example look at the state of the Roman Empire in the year 392 CE (Emperor Theodosius), and then what it was like only 20 years later, (412 CE) as Rome was sacked, Britain was abandoned, most of France, Low Countries, Hispania and Italy fell to foreign invaders (don't however make the same comparison to today). And by 475 CE, the Western Roman Empire was gone and new kingdoms had sprung up on its ashes.

So it goes. (Thx, Kurt Vonnegut).

The Supreme Court of the United States is corrupted. How else can you explain them allowing corporations, even foreign corporations, to pile millions of dollars into hit ads against political candidates?

There is a real possibility that President Obama will have the opportunity to nominate one or two more candidates for the court, and these nominations will be blocked if the Republicans take over Congress.

If you want more court decisions like this one, stay home in November. This election is more important than the one in 2008. Get out and vote AGAINST all Republicans...and bring a friend.
03:41 PM on 09/30/2010
I think Obama should give everyone a warning that if they don't vote on his appointments by the first recess following the new congress, he will use recess appointments on every one that hasn't received an up or down vote.

That way Republicans will have to at least allow votes instead of blocking everything.

On that note, we need to hammer that Republicans are abusing the power that the people gave them by having a single person put a hold on EVERYTHING! Literally every bill in the Senate is on hold until the Nut-Tea Party Senators say so.

That is abuse of power and is a clear explanation why nothing gets done. Not even to mention that everything is filibustered as well.

I did not actually read the SCOTUS rulling on this but if a corperation is now considered a person and money is part of free speech wouldn't it seem fair that the corps have the same cap as a person which 2500 dollars? Would someone please explain this. Is the difference that they create PAC's which have no limit as long as they don't declare a particular person or party? Please explsain this or tell me where to find this info. THKS

I believe the difference is that these "super PACs", corporations and labor unions can spend unlimited amounts in any political race so long as the spending does not go directly to a candidate's campaign coffers, and the spending/advertising is not coordinated with the candidate's campaign.

Obviously, it doesn't take much imagination to figure out how to evade these constraints. Proving 'coordination' with a campaign would be difficult, but that's a ridiculous pseudo-constraint, anyway. Once a candidate's policy orientation is clear and public, the unlimited spending will favor those whose policies the spender endorses, and/or against her/his opponent. So what you have is de facto coordination, even if there is no de jure.

You can be sure Grayson is man enough where he does NOT have to hide behind some secretly funded group - like the Teabaggers do.

How could someone be in your home on a daily basis for 9 years, around your children and you not know they were illegal?  The minute Queen Meg said I don't know you, I never knew you and you don't know me, was the minute things got fishy.  Nicky the maid was abandoned because of Queen Meg's eminent purchase of California, it didn't look good, oh and it was against the law.

But for Meg, what are laws?  She didn't care to vote, she didn't register until 2002.  She was too busy in her "Meg World" to be bothered by laws or politics, until she decided to buy the California Governorship.

There is nothing wrong with Congressman Grayson's ad. He is just giving the rethuglikon/teabagger party member a little of their own medicine and the don't like to results. If all other democrats could start punching back, rethuglikons/teabaggers would hide under their parents' beds.

You lay down with the pigs, you carry their stink. I'm extremely disappointed in Grayson's behavior. If something is wrong, it's wrong for everyone to do, and the end does not justify the means. If there's nothing wrong with his ad, then no one can complain when the Republicans or Tea Baggers do it.

So you feel the same way about the GOP who has been labeling liberals as terrorists sympathizers and traitors, and of course you feel the same, even stronger I would suspect, of GOP tactics equating the President of the United States to a jihadist, closet Muslim extremist and foreign born unrightful leader of our fair country?

You are very upset about all that aren't you?

We need to flip the supreme court as soon as possible. The only way to do that is give two terms to obama, and pray hillary runs after his time is up. I'm not a strong obama supporter, I'm a clintonite but there is no other way. The right wingers on the court are giving our freedom away to big business and the elites
12:47 PM on 09/30/2010
That's what you get for a politically appointed Supreme Court.
Too late - the US will pay for decades for the likes of Roberts.
Remember him openly shaking his head in disagreement during the State of The Union speech?

Unfortunately the congress will not have time to investigate these crooks if they even do that. The repbaggers in the next congress if they win, will only investigate democrats. In fact, some of the repbaggers even said they are only going to do investigations and nothing else.
Most polls have only shown what landline phones would vote for not the cell phone owners. 82% of adult americans own cell phones. In July 2008, Obama had 47 to 41 against McCain using land lines but 67 to 21 among the cell phone owners. Maybe most polls are wrong and the democrats will still maintain the majority. As far as young people who have been known not to vote in midterms, I know many young people who are fired up to vote. They are very scared of the repbaggers getting the power and they will not be shoved to the side by the polls.
