Fax Machine Prank Proves The 'Rickroll' Is Still Hilarious (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/29/10 05:47 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:50 PM ET

The "Rickroll" is getting pretty old by meme standards, but it's not dead yet and the video below is definitely proof. What you can also learn from this video, is that you don't need the Internet to Rickroll someone. Just a standard fax machine with a prank number will suffice. (Thanks David W!)

Is this the 1950's or what?

Only cool if you film it the first time.
This is a lame Rickroll.
Only a half of a Rickroll.
Not even.

I can't believe I'm commenting on this.
I need so much therapy.

I call BS. To be Rickrolled it has to be unexpected. Who carries a video cam to the fax machine?

You missed an entire joke that's been going on for well over a year. It's called rickrolling. I'd say to look it up but you'd probably come up with an absurd number of examples and it'd take a lifetime to get through them all.

Meh. Rick Astley pulls off the biggest Rickroll everytime he gets on stage.

*laughs* It would have been great if it also played that song.

I think to do it by fax machine the best way would be to fax the lyrics one line at a time. It would be painful and hilarious at the same time.

No video to watch... what's a rickroll? and can someone explain what a meme is?
12:46 PM on 09/30/2010
A meme is any sort of cultural phenomenon or idea. When people talk about "internet memes," this definition is probably a little generous. It generally just means any video or picture that gets really popular ("goes viral") on the internet. There's an excellent catalogue of these at knowyourmeme.com .

To "Rickroll" someone is to mislead them into viewing or hearing the song "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley. It's a 1980s song that you'll no doubt recognize, even if you don't know the name. It got so popular because the music video for the song is ridiculous--- it shows a skinny red-headed guy who can't be more than 5'5" dancing badly in sunglasses and singing in a voice that doesn't fit his appearance.

Hope that helps :)

Oh, I love Rick Astley! I have his first two CDs. His rendition of Nat King Cole's "When I Fall in Love" is breathtaking.

I had a friend who got rickrolled by snail mail. He ordered a vinyl record online and when he opened it up it was case for Never Gonna Give You Up. Luckly the record he actually ordered was inside.
