I have the same question for every single one of these NOT coffee products: Why?
Why call it coffee if it ISN'T coffee??

And why drink something that isn't coffee that calls itself coffee? It's exactly the same as eating white chocolate; White chocolate is by definition not chocolate, and is just a fake-out, second best, not nearly as good substitute for the real thing. The same can be said for all of these pretenders.

COFFEE is not made from corn, barley, soy, tea leaves, or herbs. Coffee is made from the coffee bean, best served black and pipping hot.

I agree with you 100%, however this type of substitute has been around forever! During the Depression & WW-II it was Postum (still available) made of chicory and roasted grains and yes it's vile! Yet, I must admit I do enjoy the coffee & chicory brew in New Orleans, but that was to make coffee go further. If you want a real bitter substitute, roast some dandelion roots and you can relive the "War Between the States." All the best ...

I'll pass on all of these (especially the Kopi doo doo coffee). For those who want a good substitute, try Raja's Cup

No chicory or grains. It tastes about 75% like coffee.

But I'm still sticking with regionally-grown organic fair trade meself.

What's wrong with plain coffee? Hell, roast it yourself in your stove, grind it and then put it in the Chemex. Bliss!

And if you're gonna' doctor it up, use real, heavy whipping cream.

HuffPost, I'm surprised at you! Only one of you examples out of ten is actually coffee. It's like describing anything that comes in a martini glass as a martini. And on National Coffee Day, too...tsk, tsk.

Agreed. It's just annoying when people call weird concoctions a martini. As an alcohol purist, I sympathize about the coffee...but then, I think I'm probably a coffee purist, too.

Amen. And let's add "herb teas" to that list.

If it's not made from coffee beans, it's not coffee. It's just another brewed drink that pretends to be something it's not.
04:26 PM on 09/29/2009
As a side note, unflavored coffee and tea have no gluten, unless you dip a cookie in the brewed product.

good point. That is why it is bizarre that the soy "coffee" advertises itself as gluten free--as if real coffee is not.

What about Kopi Luak coffee?

It's called Kopi Luwak. When I saw "The Bucket List" I thought they totally invented it, but, in fact, it's very real:

Which only proves you really can sell people any kind of Sh*t, if you price it high enough.

I have a feeling another word for "earthy" in this context would be "crappy."
