Tea Party Candidate Scott Ashjian Threatens To Pull Votes From Sharron Angle In Nevada

Sharron Angle Scott Ashjian Tea Party Drama

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/01/10 03:09 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:55 PM ET

Jon Scott Ashjian, Nevada's little known actual "Tea Party" Senate candidate, said this week that not only was he going to stay in the race, he was going to overtake Sharron Angle on his path to victory.

Speaking with the Las Vegas Sun's Jon Ralston, the conservative agitator said that, despite recent negotiations to remove him from the race, the momentum was with him.

Ralston provides Ashjian's account of a recent conversation with Cleta Mitchell, a high-powered D.C. attorney who was trying to convince him to drop out:

"She threatened and bullied me," Ashjian claimed. "She told me she wanted me to withdraw as a candidate because I was helping Harry Reid. I told her, 'Obviously you haven't read The Wall Street Journal.' "

That was a reference to a recent piece in the national newspaper, a profile of Ashjian he seems quite proud of.

"She kept repeating to me, 'If I'm in the race, Sharron can't win. I am ruining it for them.' She wanted me to do the right thing and step aside."

Ashjian added, "Nobody can get me out of this race but me. As goofy as it sounds, you're going to see in the next few weeks, the race is between Harry Reid and Scott Ashjian."

That was just the latest in an ongoing saga of bizarreness taking place on the conservative side of the race.

In September, Ashjian sent a cease and desist letter to Sharron Angle's campaign attempting to force the GOP candidate to stop using the "Tea Party" nomenclature to define her candidacy.

He spelled Angle's first name wrong and, as Ralston put it, claimed he was "trademarking the name for his campaign."

Things got even weirder this week when Ashjian, Angle and their campaign managers met for their very own summit to discuss forming a unified coalition that would remove Ashjian from the ballot in November. The negotiations were fruitless.

At any rate, Ashjian, who the Wall Street Journal reports has a "Playboy-themed pinball machine in his office, drives a $160,000 black Mercedes with a night-vision system, and carries a pistol under his suit jacket," could indeed play spoiler for the Angle campaign.

Though his candidacy and appropriation of the "Tea Party" name -- he'll have it listed beside his name on the ballot in November, according to WSJ -- has been maligned by many supporters of the broader Tea Party movement, Ashjian could leave Angle competing for conservative votes.

And people like Cleta Mitchell who are speaking up for Sharron Angle are taking notice.

"Scott Ashjian is an ego-maniac whack-job," Mitchell told the Wall Street Journal on Thursday. "Every vote for him is a vote for Harry Reid."

Scott Ashjian has proven himself to be unscrupulous and a liar. He agreed to the meeting and to no recording devices. He reneged and secretly recorded the meeting. This man has no honor or integrity and is a lying SOB. He is just like any of the Harry Rieds in Washington. Anyone who votes for this clown will do nothing but insure Ried is sent back to Washington. Angle is no radical and I would prefer her to be a bit more conservitive, but she will fight against the current socialist agenda in the congress and the White House.
This whole thing smells of a plant by the Democrats. A last minute canidate to split the vote when it was becoming clear that Angle would likely win. It is a typical shameful tactic of the democrats

Here's a question for the Tea Partiers here ...we have two people fighting over the tea party name.

Who does Michelle Bachmann prefer for her TP Caucus? And who do you prefer?

Serious questions.

"[T]he Wall Street Journal reports [that Ashjian] has a 'Playboy-themed pinball machine in his office, drives a $160,000 black Mercedes with a night-vision system, and carries a pistol under his suit jacket ... '"

Sounds like a mainstream Republican to me.

Sharron Angle just got the endorsement from Nevada's largest newspaper,,the Review Journal. Angle and Reid are now locked in a dead heat at 43% each despite the fact Reid is outspending Angle by 6 to 1...!

Voters in Nevada need only to ask themselves if they beleive  that,,,they,,their state,,,,and the country, are better off now with Reid in office than they were the last time Reid was elected................

Senator Angle,,,the freshman senator from Nevada...!

looks like Reid is just in a fight for his life. I mean regardless of the outcome, senior democratic leadership is being shaken by new comers. This should be a pretty clear referendum on the poor management of the past two years. In two years who would have imagined these numbers could ever be possible. using the left's description of the tea party, is it not shocking that an so-called "extremist" candidate like Angle, could be beating or tied to Reid. I think what the democrats need to do is realize that their party is a deep trouble. I am still puzzled to see why it has taken them so long to start campaigning big time.

Being that this is not a favorable election for incumbents, if they both go into the elections tied in the polls, I believe that the undecided will vote in favor of Angle. Reid has too many battles to fight, one includes the 14% unemployment rate.

You all want it one way. But, its the other way. -

Actually, its if they think they WOULD be better off with Angle over Reed, given that one can not change the past, and consequently elections are forward looking in nature, but Im splitting hairs I suppose.

And what do you expect from a group whose core values are lies, hypocrisy, demagoguery and xenophobia. I'm no psychological expert, but I hardly think any of these engender honor, fortitude, truth and discipline.

I live in Nevada..and we are the state from which Virginia City and the 1800's silver rush burst from...not to mention...gambling and Las Vegas. We duke it out...that is for sure!!

The latest poll I saw on Friday....showed Reid ahead of Angle by (5) points. Both Reid and Angle are doing heavy T.V. attack ads in Nevada. This reminds me of the Obama-McCain NV race in 2008 and we know who won that one......!!!.

If Republican think we should have less government, then why don't they just take over and make laws that say government will not get involved on everything. Then they can all go home, get a job because there is nothing in washington for them to do? They should also give up their salaries and benefits. If there are no laws for government to vote on, then lets make states make the rule, I am better blue states will survive and red states will not. Blue states will have taxes to take care of roads, police, firefighter, and teachers, whereas red states will have pot holes, crime and burned out homes. People should also vote whether they want to contribute to the military, I will vote no on that, I would want my money that I make to put to another use.
