Olympic Gymnast Hong Su Jong Investigated For Age Falsification

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — International gymnastics officials are investigating another case of possible age falsification, this time of a North Korean gymnast who listed three different birth dates.

North Korea and Hong Su Jong will be given a chance to explain the discrepancies at a hearing and in written statements, the International Gymnastics Federation said Saturday.

Hong's birth date is March 9, 1989, on the entry list for the world championships this month in Rotterdam, Netherlands. But she had a March 9, 1985, birth date at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 world championships, and a March 9, 1986, birth date at the 2007 world championships, where she won the silver medal on vault.

If Hong was born in 1989, she would have been ineligible to compete in Athens. Gymnasts must turn 16 in the calendar year of an Olympics to be eligible.

The FIG's investigation of Hong comes six months after China was stripped of its bronze medal from the 2000 Sydney Olympics for using an underage gymnast.

Age falsification has been a problem in gymnastics since the 1980s, when the minimum age was raised from 14 to 15 to help protect still-developing athletes from serious injuries. The minimum age was raised to its current 16 in 1997. North Korea was banned from the 1993 world championships after the FIG discovered Kim Gwang Suk, the 1991 gold medalist on uneven bars, was listed as 15 for three years in a row.

But the issue drew worldwide attention in 2008, when media reports and Internet records suggested some of the girls on host China's gold-medal Olympic team could have been as young as 14. Those girls were eventually cleared, but the investigation uncovered evidence that Dong Fangxiao, a member of the 2000 squad, was only 14 in Sydney.

All of Dong's results from Sydney were nullified, and the International Olympic Committee took the bronze medal from China and gave it to the United States.

To prevent age manipulation, the FIG last year began requiring all junior and senior gymnasts who represent their countries at most international meets to have a license. The licenses include gymnasts' name, sex, country and date of birth, and are their proof of age for their entire career.

I was in gymnastics for many, many years! And there is NO DOUBT in my mind that more than one Chinese gymnast was less than 16 years of age!
The U.S. was jobbed by the country that owns us, thanks of W and his wars!

When the US, USSR and East German teams come clean about doping in the 80s, 90s, and 00's, we can start worrying about age falsification. At least these girls have the talent to win. How many of the track stars of the 80s and 90s were clean?

You are comparing apples to oranges. This is about age falsification. Stick to the topic.

China's adherence to International Sporting rules is a joke. They think that the laws do not apply to them. Ban them from competition until specific steps are taken to force their compliance.

You can't play athletics if you were not born three times in China.

I still don't believe all those Chinese gymnists in Bejing were 16. I don't care if they were cleared!

Agreed. It sounds like it's very simple to be cleared of any underage accusations in the Olympics.

How is it no one realizes the different birthdates until it has happened 3 or 4 times? If the birthday is March 9, 1985 in 2004 and 2006 and then March 9, 1986 in 2007...how is it not checked then?! Why does it taked another 3 years and another different date to get it checked?! Seems like people just don't want to do their jobs until someone else points out that they haven't been.

Very astute observation and very good point.

Agreed! Six years later, someone just happens to stumble into the birth date discrepancy...

Wht this proves is the IOC will not investigate anything. The investigation came from a newspaper that performed basic investigation after the IOC said they found nothing wrong. The IOC is useless

Who cares?  The Olympics should be about the best athlete on the planet, not those who meet certain criteria.   The age restrictions exist to protect the coaches and parents who make huge investments in athletes and want their rewards.  The reality is that in gymnastics the best athletes are underage.  They argue it is for their safety, which is a bunch of hooey since they have all been training since age 5.  We award medals to those who are able to continue to perform past their peak - a veterans award, not a world championship.

I disagree. I can give you two very good reasons why the age limit is important. The first is psychological. There is a lot of pressure for these athletes to win and even at 16 some don't handle it well. The other reason is physical. Did you know that boys who pitch baseball are encouraged not to throw curve balls? Because they can do damage to their arms before they are completely matured. The same is true of these gymnasts, their bones have not finished growing at age 12, 13, or 14 and therefore it is possible to damage the growth plates and end up doing irreparable harm to the young athlete. It they are the best, they can wait, isn't that a great life lesson, that we can wait for the things we want bad enough, that we don't have to have everything, right now?

The problem with your argument is that they don't wait.  They are doing the same exercises as older athletes at a younger age.  They can do them better for exactly the reason you point out - they are more flexible.

The delay is not to protect the athlete. It is to protect the establishment, which requires that an athlete "pay her dues" before getting on the big stage.

OMG a Chinese lying about her age. What's next an East German judge being biased..
