WASHINGTON (AP) -- Tapping into anger as the tea party movement has done, a coalition of progressive and civil rights groups marched by the thousands Saturday on the Lincoln Memorial and pledged to support Democrats struggling to keep power on Capitol Hill.

"We are together. This march is about the power to the people," said Ed Schultz, host of "The Ed Show" on MSNBC. "It is about the people standing up to the corporations. Are you ready to fight back?"

In a fiery speech that opened the "One Nation Working Together" rally on the National Mall, Schultz blamed Republicans for shipping jobs overseas and curtailing freedoms. He borrowed some of conservative commentator Glenn Beck's rhetoric and vowed to "take back our country."

"This is a defining moment in America. Are you American?" Schultz told the raucous crowd. "This is no time to back down. This is time to fight for America."

With a month of campaigning to go and voter unhappiness high, the Democratic-leaning organizers hope the four-hour program of speeches and entertainment energizes activists who are crucial if Democrats are to retain their majorities in the House and Senate. The national mood suggests gains for the GOP, and Republicans are hoping to ride voter anger to gain control of the House and possibly the Senate.

More than 400 organizations -- ranging from labor unions to faith, environmental and gay rights groups -- partnered for the event, which comes one month after Beck packed the same space with conservatives and tea party-style activists.

It's now official, folks. According to D.C. Metro and the National Park Service's examination of the satellite images at the peak @ 2pm, EST, the One Nation rally drew nearly DOUBLE the amount of people that Beck's little Whitestock did.

Preliminary satellite estimates put the crowd size of Saturday's "One Nation" rally at between 175,000 to 200,000 at about 2pm EST.

“Which side of the fence?

If you ever wondered which side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!

If a Republican doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.

If a Democrat doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a Republican is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.

If a Democrat is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a Republican is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.

If a Democrat is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a Republican is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.

A Democrat wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a Republican doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.

Democrats demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a Republican is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.

A Democrat non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.

If a Republican decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.

A Democrat demands that the rest of us pay for his.â€

Rad Tech, republicans talk about God but their words don't match their actions. God knows his own and no amount of false prophecy will change that. You can tell a mans beliefs by what he does. What a man looks liike should not be the gauge used to judge a mans heart or value as a human being. Republicans need to stop their race baiting, pretense to care about the common man when everyone knows they only care about the rich corporatists. Read CenterForAmericanProgress blog today and you will be enlightened to know that the Chamber of Commerce is a coduit for foreign corporate backing of the republican party. Some Populist movement huh?

It's funny how these pictures were not shown. I wonder why? Face it., the Dems are being controlled by socialists. Vote every Dem out in Nov.

Based on the posted photo, where the attendees were most dense (pun intended) was at the Washington Memorial. It was essentially high noon and it was a ghost town.

I saw nothing but professionally produced signs from Unions and Socialists. This wasn't a grass roots effort, these were all astro-turds.

AlexandraF, The Democratic party does Welcome conservatives or republicans. It's just a minimal requirement of sanity and rational debate sans the hate and racist crap you spew. There is nothing wrong with a difference of opinion but we absolutely demand respect and intelligence. Progressives believe in decency and fair play. It is a republican myth that liberals are anti-Christian because the majority of us are Christian or believe in Christ's golden rule. Republicans seem to only care about the rich and powerful.

Yeah thats why all Democrats go to church and no Republicans ever..

And all comments against Obama are racist...

And everyone that went to Beck rally were Crakers..

This is disgusting all the way around. I was in DC in 95 on Memorial Day and it was 50th anniversary of WWII and 20th anniversary of Viet Nam. The pride in Viet Nam vets that was there something any American would have been proud of at The Wall that night. Two blocks away at that time you would have been taking you life in your own hands, but there in the park everything was fine….. I am sorry but I just cannot get over how these pigs respect the veterans by trashing the WWII monument…..

I talked to a bus driver on Sunday October 3 who told me that the New Jersey State Police pulled over 10 busloads going to the rally for "one reason or another". I have no doubt the the NJ troopers gave the Glenn Beck buses a police escort.

Okay, for all of you folks who are always defending MSNBC's ridiculous, hyperpartisan, ranting against Fox's ridiculous, hyperpartisan, ranting by saying that the difference is that Fox lies and MSNBC tells the truth, here's one for ya. How in he// can Ed Schultz say with a straight face, as he's doing right now, that the "One Nation" rally drew the same crowd as the Beck Rally? In fact, he's even trying to stick with his ridiculing of the sparse "87,000" at Beck's rally, while suggesting that the 175,000 estimate for the "One Nation" rally is dependable. All areal photos (which Schultz avoided, of course) show that Beck's rally was significantly larger than the "One Nation" rally. I mean, that's not a partisan comment; that's just an objective fact. Who ya gonna believe, Ed or your own lyin' eyes?

Really, it's kinda silly to argue about the size of respective rallies, anyway... but to lie about it, and to sink to the level of becoming the less trustworthy participant in a debate with the likes of Glenn Beck... well that's downright embarrassing.

This evening, Schultz was still shilling the fantasy numbers, even going so far as to say they were stretched "back to the Washington Monument," but when he cut to his speech in its entirety, it was clear the crowd began to sparse out about 1/4 of the way TO the monument.

I was cracking up.

As soon as I saw the list of speakers that included Jesse Jackson and Marc Morial, who left New Orleans looking like a third world country, I knew this rally was based on welfare dependency, not job creation.

or would I like be a hobbit

Nice. I come here to see if they're able to practice the tolerance they preach. The results are telling, just like the trash left behind at this rally. All talk....

The Associated Press has reported that the One Nation Rally was "sparse" compared with Glenn Beck's rally. AND that it left a ton of trash behind. Figures. Like they say, garbage in, garbage out.

Oh, and IMeMine, yes, Fox New reported on the event. Man, how the left loves to blindly stereotype everyone and everything that it fears and disagrees with. Pitiful.
11:01 AM on 10/04/2010
It said they left trash behind. That's not what I saw on C-SPAN. And the gathering wasn't as thick as Beck but it wasn't sparse either. You can watch the whole thing on C-SPAN's site. You can see it for yourself directly.

Didn't see this event aired on Fox News, did ya?
