Whenever you get the time to go away, it's always nice to have a true escape. Find something new, explore, learn.

We asked our friends at Black Tomato, a high-end, bespoke travel company, to give us some thoughts on the best places to go to get off the grid.

The company focuses purely on bespoke trips to ensure that their clients' time away from work and life is worth it. Here are their selections for great off-the-grid trips.

Bhutan
1 of 12
Tourists were locked out of Bhutan until 1974 which means the raw beauty of this undiscovered Kingdom lies in its classified approach to cultural identity. Piece together its hidden details; take a second look at vertiginous valley walls to make-out intricate ancient settlements gouged into the rock face.

Having been lucky enough to have seen 50 countries in my life so far, I can emphatically state that Namibia was spectacular- I had dinner in the dunes of the desert at night and it was an unforgettable place to see. Costa Rica is also beautiful. But also, I can drive an hour and a half from my city and be in the beautiful mountains of Lake Louise and it still catches my breath. Get out, spend the money, see the world....

. The problem with these lists and travel companies is that these places are now 'on-the grid'. The same people who take these high end trips will ask for internet and phone connections next time. Pretty soon they'll advertise luxury resorts with all the amenities of home, and on to the next spot!

Scottish Highlands and Islands.... Outer Hebrides, anyone?

Cold, wet and in the winter dark for about 20 hours a day....

But on a good summer's day. Wonderful.

I concur! The Western Highlands especially. Loch Lomond, Oban and Inverary-side. Beautiful.

I can go hiking up in the local woods and be completely off the grid. Beautiful and a lot cheaper.

it may sound fairly pedestrian to some of you guys, but check out the 4X4 area in the Outer Banks in the fall. hardly a soul around, just wildlife, the ocean, scarce cell phone coverage, and rare internet. no roads, no commercial development, just peace and quiet. *and* beautiful horses. absolute heaven. (and sometimes the ocean is still warm enough to venture in.)

The night sky in the mountains of the Hindu-Kush in Afghanistan was beyond description. I had no idea how many stars there are.

It's among the most incredible things I've ever seen.

Who the .... wants to go to a desert. If I'm going to "get of the grid" I'll go to "Los Roques, Venezuela" where I can eat lobsters and fish 5 times a day while swimming in crystal clear water.

I think the Congo is a little more off the grid than any of these places, but it's not tourist friendly, to say the least.

Yeah, you can go see the gorillas but you have to brave one of the most rape-centric regions on the planet. Not a place for family vacations.

To get off the grid - then show a picture of a Damascus street bathed in lights.
