Sex Study By National Survey Of Sexual Health And Behavior Is Biggest Since 1994

Sex Study

NEW YORK — The male-female orgasm gap. The sex lives of 14-year-olds. An intriguing breakdown of condom usage rates, by age and ethnicity, with teens emerging as more safe-sex-conscious than boomers.

That's just a tiny sampling of the data being unveiled Monday in what the researchers say is the largest, most comprehensive national survey of Americans' sexual behavior since 1994.

Filling 130 pages of a special issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, the study offers detailed findings on how often Americans have sex, with whom, and how they respond. In all, 5,865 people, ranging in age from 14 to 94, participated in the survey.

The lead researchers, from Indiana University's Center for Sexual Health Promotion, said the study fills a void that has grown since the last comparable endeavor – the National Health and Social Life Survey – was published 16 years ago. Major changes since then include the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, the types of sex education available to young people, the advent of same-sex marriage, and the emergence of the Internet as a tool for social interaction.

Dr. Dennis Fortenberry, a pediatrics professor who was lead author of the study's section about teen sex, said the overall findings of such a huge survey should provide reassurance to Americans who are curious about how their sex lives compare with others.

"Unless, like al-Qaida, you feel there's something abnormal about the American people, what these data say is, 'This is normal – everything in there is normal.'"

The researchers said they were struck by the variety of ways in which the subjects engaged in sex – 41 different combinations of sexual acts were tallied, encompassing vaginal and anal intercourse, oral sex, and partnered masturbation.

Men are more likely to experience orgasm when vaginal intercourse is involved, while women are more likely to reach orgasm when they engage in variety of acts, including oral sex, said researcher Debra Herbenick, lead author of the section about women's sex lives.

She noted there was a gap in perceptions – 85 percent of the men said their latest sexual partner had an orgasm, while only 64 percent of the women reported having an orgasm in their most recent sexual event.

One-third of women experienced genital pain during their most recent sex, compared to 5 percent of men, said Herbenick, citing this as an area warranting further study.

The study, which began taking shape in 2007, was funded by Church & Dwight Co., the manufacturer of Trojan condoms. Questions about condom usage figured prominently in the study, but the researchers – during a teleconference – insisted the integrity of their findings was not affected by the corporate tie.

Among the findings was a high rate of condom usage among 14- to 17-year-olds. Of the surveyed boys who had sexual intercourse, 79 percent reported using a condom on the most recent occasion, compared to 25 percent for all the men in the survey.

However, the sample for that particular question involved only 57 teens in the 14-to-17 age range. That's far smaller than the thousands involved in latest federal Youth Risk Behavior Survey last year which calculated condom use among sexually active high school students at 61 percent

Fortenberry nonetheless found the new findings encouraging.

"There's been a major shift among young people in the role condoms have in their sexual lives," he said. "Condoms have become normative."

Another intriguing finding – rates of condom usage among black and Hispanic men were significantly higher than for whites. The researchers said this suggested that HIV-AIDS awareness programs were now making headway in those communities, which have relatively high rates of the disease.

The lowest condom usage rates were for men over 50 – and the researchers said this was worrisome. Although men in that age group are more likely to be married than males in their teens and 20s, other surveys have shown 50s-and-over to be far more open to multiple sexual partners than in the past, raising the risk for disease.

Other notable findings:

_While about 7 percent of adult women and 8 percent of men identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual, the proportion of individuals who have had same-gender sex at some point in their lives is higher. For example, 15 percent of the men aged 50-59 said they had received oral sex from another man at some point.

_Among adolescent boys, only about 2 percent of the 14-year-olds – but 40 percent of the 17-year-olds – said they had engaged in sexual intercourse in the past year.

The survey was conducted from March through May of 2009, with the assistance of Knowledge Networks, among a nationally representative sample of adolescents and adults. Once people were selected to participate, they were interviewed online; participants without Internet access were provided it for free.

The researchers said the 1994 survey was compiled through in-person interviews, while the new method – collecting data over the Internet – may help make respondents more comfortable about discussing sexual behaviors.

Dr. Irwin Goldstein, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, noted that the new study came more than 60 years after Alfred Kinsey – also based at Indiana University – published his groundbreaking report, "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male."

"Just like then, these papers contain material that is avant garde and often considered off-limits," Goldstein wrote in a forward to the study. "At a time when we can have nudity on HBO but cannot use the names of our genitals on the evening news, there remains a need to continue research on sexual health."

It is heartening to see a recent study that reveals that 1/3 of women experience pain during sex- there is a condition called vulvodynia which affects an estimated 15-19 percent of women. This condition includes pain not only during sex, but with other activities like riding a bicycle, walking, wearing jeans, and sitting. It is a crying shame that so many women are suffering in silence from this disorder, and there has been very little research or publicity. Women with this condition are left to feel inadequate, abnormal, and extremely depressed.

It's about time that pain with sex gets the publicity it deserves. No woman should be told that it's psychological without receiving the appropriate tests. It seems to be an automatic response from doctors that this pain is all "in women's heads". WRONG

Please visit www.nva.org for more information.

I know if this were a man's problem, there'd be a cure by now!

For shame!!

Two parts that should be linked: men who believe their partners have reached orgasm and women who actually reached orgasm linked to the number of women experiencing vaginal pain. This shows the lack of communication within relationships. Many women feel the need to fake orgasms to make their partner feel adequate or want the act to be over. Talking to your partner about likes and dislikes can keep the connection both in the bedroom and in all aspects of your relationship.
Vaginal pain has been talked about as a normal, often referred to as the pain before the pleasure. Whenever there is the slightest vaginal pain there is vaginal tearing, leading to bacteria and yeast infections, ultimately damaging a very important muscle called the pubococcygeus muscle. This muscle is involved in orgasm, which could be why many women cannot reach orgasm. A good lubricant can help with pain and can be paired with a vaginal moisturizer. If the pain persists looking to a health care provider for information on vaginal disorders such as vaginismus or vulvodynia can help as well.
I've been studying women’s sexual health for almost five years. As a Pure Romance consultant we work closely with Indiana University, finding ways to educate and empower women on their sexuality. It is my job to show women the importance of communication within their relationships, knowing their bodies and taking control of their sexuality. I can’t wait for a day when these issues will be talked about more openly and with less negatives about sex.

If men really payed attention to their woman, they could tell if she had an orgasm. One caveat would be if you have sex with a particular woman a number of times you can tell. Just pay attention, there are a number of indicators on a woman's body (Censors would not post my reply if I mentioned all the places)

Why would you ever do a sex survey without women? I think they called their study innovative for including women.

40% of 17-year old boys had sex in the past year? These numbers are staggering, terrifying. 17-year olds have no business having sex. They are children. They need to be treated as such.

Until we stop promoting the sexiness of adolesence in our society, these numbers will continue to rise. As will the teenage birth rate, the teenage dropout rate, and the spread of STIs.

Parents need to be honest and open about sexuality and consequences with their children. Or else their children will learn what they learn on the playground, and not from a reliable source.

That is wrong, 17 year olds are not children. They are young adults, inexperienced yes, children no. If you treat them like children then they act like children. Treat them as they are, young adults capable of cognizant thought and making rational decisions, then they will act accordingly.

40% of 17-year old boys SAID they had sexual intercourse in the past year. I wonder what the difference between what a 17 year old boy will say he has done and what he has actually done.

Everyone lies in these surveys. That's the only consistent result. Shortly after college I worked on some research studies for erectile dysfunction (~17 years ago). The study only allowed people who were in a monogamous relationship of at least a few years. Almost all of the participants were married. Needless to say, each person filled out a questionnaire on sexual attempts, success, masturbation, etc. How often do you want to guess that the number of attempts matched? Never. Not one time. Even random chance should have yielded better results.

You're right. In this case my "needless to say" was needless to say.

It's like how the term "played out" is played out.

It's like how the phrase "gone the way of the dinosaur" has...you get the idea.

It would be more helpful if they broke down their stats on condom usage by type of relationship. I'd rather hear that lots of single 20-somethings are using condoms, while marrieds are not, then to just hear "some 20-somethings use condoms".

It was probably distorted by the way they wrote it, but "latest sexual partner" and "most recent sexual event" are very different statements. The first could imply partner over a long term... "did your partner have an orgasm ever?" While the second only implies the last time they had sex period.

Good question. Maybe the article writer just wanted to avoid using a phrase twice in a sentence. I hate it when they don't include the questions. Oh yeah, they never do.

I still am baffled by those in my country (America) who have totally misappropriated the sex act as something "dirty," even when it is the most natural thing in the world. Even babies, when undiapered, will play with their genital areas. Somewhere along the line, we let the Christian Fundamentaliban grasp the argument. The resulting disconnect is, "Let's don't, and say we did!" I fully enjoy my sexual life, although at 63 it is starting to decline.

The country (the United States) wasn't founded by puritans. There were, however, quite a few puritans who illegally immigrated to this continent before the founding of this country. Yes, sadly, we let the fundamentalist wack-jobs distort reality to this day.

And you might be surprised that the Puritans were very pro-sex, so long as it was married sex. In fact, they once excommunicated a man for not having sex with his wife for two years.
