Facebook Down: Outage Could Be Precursor To Redesign

Facebook

First Posted: 10/06/10 01:41 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:55 PM ET

Facebook is down and has been experiencing outages since about midnight Eastern Time tonight, Oct. 5, 2010.

Many Twitter users are reporting the outage, with hundreds of tweets appearing about it in minutes. DownRightNow.com confirms the downtime, with the first widespread problems starting about 11:52 p.m. EST.

TechCrunch reported that a site redesign could be unveiled tomorrow. If true, it would come less than a month after Twitter announced its major site redesign (features for that here).

According to TechCrunch, the Facebook redesign might include movement of chat, apps and profile navigation. Facebook has not commented on the report.

UPDATE, 1:15 a.m. EST: Facebook appears to be back up for some people, but others are still using Twitter to complain about service outages.

UPDATE, 1:30 a.m. EST: Things are still a little shaky, as downforeveryoneorjustme.com says "It's not just you! http://facebook.com looks down from here." Meanwhile, downrightnow.com indicates a likely service disruption. But some HuffPost night owls have been able to sign in during the past 15 minutes, and a number of people have been on Facebook sharing and liking this very page. Either way, you're not alone. If you feel like you're stuck in the pre-2004 era, remember to put on some Norah Jones, Fountains of Wayne, Nappy Roots, or Moby (YouTube and iTunes seem to be fine).

UPDATE, 6:50 a.m. EST: No change in the status at downforeveryoneorjustme.com, but downrightnow.com has upgraded things to "Possible Service Trouble." HuffPost staff has had no problem using the site for the past few hours, and comments are coming in indicating no issues for users around the globe.

This is the sort of thing that will continue to happen with both Twitter and Facebook until they become actual Internet and Web applications rather than just throwbacks to Compu$erve masquerading as Web applications.

This means distributed processing, using standard Web and Internet protocols rather than a private server no matter how huge it is.

For the facebook addicted this is horrible, for the rest of us it's an inconvienence ranging from mild to major but not a complete disaster.

OMG, I had a major panic attack complete with hyperventilation during the more than two hours I went without FaceBook. Mark, please don't ever do that again. Promise, honey?

It was horrible, no Facebook.

I had to spend the night knocking on neighbors doors asking if "they like it", if they want to "comment" or had any status updates...

Some folks who are anti-TRUTH hate any alternative sources of information-news and truth. For MANY , FB is an excellent social media source....home of MUCH truth.....that is often withheld in MSM.

Of course. And the government is out to get all of us.

Please put down the Kool-Aid.

Sadly, the MSM is a bunch of businesses that have to survive in a capitalist system. The print media are already headed down the drain. It's also not the media's fault that most of us pay attention only to the lowest common denominator in media content. Ever notice how many high quality TV shows have been withdrawn for lack of interest, to be replaced by mediocre stuff that draws a larger audience?

I do have facebook and I like the ability to send a quick note to my daughters, granddaughters and grandsons that live out of state. One of my daughters got me into joining and playing a game. The game began to consume my life and I quit and blocked all applications so I can NEVER be invited to play a game online.

Life is to precious to waste spending it on a computer.

And with that, I am signing off and going to my neighbors house for our morning coffee and REAL chat! :)
Peace

Instead of Facebook, I have turned to interpersonal interaction. In person: it's the new Facebook.
