Chris Armstrong On CNN (VIDEO): Andrew Shirvell's Blog 'Hurtful'

First Posted: 10/07/10 08:42 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:55 PM ET

Andrew Shirvell Chris Armstrong

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The openly gay student assembly president at the University of Michigan who claims he's been frequently harassed by an assistant state attorney general said Wednesday that the man's personal blog targeting him was "hurtful."

Chris Armstrong, 21, told CNN in a taped interview broadcast Wednesday night that he hopes to make something positive of the situation by speaking out and offering a message to other young people who are being harassed. Armstrong filed for a personal protection order last month, claiming Andrew Shirvell has harassed him at various places around Ann Arbor.

"I think this is really just an opportunity," Armstrong said. "I think this chance to really speak out and say something and give a message to other kids who might be facing some things."

Shirvell, 30, started a blog in April in which he regularly lambasted Armstrong as a racist with a "radical homosexual agenda."

"It was hurtful," Armstrong said of Shirvell's blog.

The Michigan Student Assembly president has said Shirvell also heckled him during a speech, showed up at a late-night party at his off-campus house and called the Washington office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, where Armstrong held an internship.

Shirvell went on personal leave last week from his job. He earlier told CNN that he regards his criticism of Armstrong as a political campaign, not a personal attack. He says that when he's not at work, he has the right to say whatever he wants.

A spokesman for Attorney General Mike Cox has said Shirvell could face a disciplinary hearing when he returns.

Neither Shirvell nor Armstrong have returned phone and e-mail messages from The Associated Press.

I see it as a case where the status quo, white male, can get away with harassing and stalking another person while employed by the government. While Shirley Sherrod, was fired over alleged wrong doings and an altered video interview. They didn't even try and substantiate any of the accusations against Ms. Sherrod, however, this Shrivell toad holds nationally broadcasted interviews.

This is the entire Anderson Cooper episode, with Shervell and his boss, the AG
--- putting Chris better in context.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vczh_RMh4Mw

I am NOT interested in picking apart the insane Shervell --- the point is that
IT SEEMS TO BE OK TO PICK ON GAYS --- EVEN TO THE POINT OF PUBLIC PERSECUTION, STALKING, WHATEVER

Notice that Chris does not seem interested in the publicity-- he is still afffected by the barrage of persecution

Keep fighting the good fight Mr. Armstrong! Remember, that if not all of us, the best of us support you.

Shrivell is 30?!?! I thought he was in his 40's at least! Eep!

shervill certainly represents an interesting subset of public nutcase. Under the circumstances, I think Armstrong has handled himself well. Obviously he is not reluctant to be in the limelight, or he would not have run for student president. That said, having an obsessive/compulsive stalker is not something that anyone in that role might imagine to be the deal.

The interview with Cooper was fascinating, Shervill seemed to be decompensating during the interview.. more wild, more bizarre, more tense, more tightly wired.

I don't think this saga is done. I fear that Shervill's tightly wired inner world will come unwrapped in some unpredictable way; clearly he has violent tendencies as represented in both words and actions. I would rather hope that this guy would face disciplinary charges, get canned and just go away.

And yep, the dynamic of that kind of homophobic hatred is something that we';ve seen with Rekers and the Rentboy, Haggard and the male escort, Larry "Wide stance" Craig, and so on. Their internal fear of their own potential mix of gender orientation combined with their own ingrained prohibitions erupts at others. I cannot imagine what it would be like to live inside with that level of internal emotional chaos.

I'm guessing Andrew Shirvell is not only gay but jealous of Chris Armstrong's good looks--he is cute.

You're probable right, but forget Armstrong (no offense) - it was all an act to get on Anderson Cooper's show!

Class act, Mr. Armstrong!

Shirvell's blog may be locked, and his facebook account deleted, but the good news is his words of bigotry and hatred are forever captured in cyberspace.
check out his interactions with me:

Methinks (s)he doth protest too much...

10/1 Shirvell pulls a Ted Haggard/Larry Craig within the next 24 months.

I hope some enterprising investigative reporter is on that story right now.

Shirvell is a stalker. If he was anyone else he'd have been arrested by now.

I saw the Anderson Cooper interview with Shirvell.  He was obviously obsessed with Armstrong to the point where I thought he was unstable.  When Cooper pointed out what Armstrong had said and done, Shirvell comments came off as if he were talking about some nefarious person who was intent on destroying the college and the American way of life.

Shirvell's crusade against Armstrong shows that Shirvell is not fit to hold the position that he currently has in state government.

So you're saying that Republicans are so few in number that they hold on to even their crazy, obsessed people? Pretty sad.

Politics. As disgusting as Mr. Shirvell is, he does have some first amendment rights in this case (though not the stalking) AND he's a crazy lawyer. This makes outright firing him a touch sticky. Let's wait and see...

If they don't fire him after the disciplinary hearing then its time for outrage. But let them do it slowly if they want, maybe it will hurt him more.

Well, they should bring him back, give him his disciplinary hearing, fire him and alert the psychiatric authorities.

This guy is a stalker plain and simple, he has a thing for Armstrong and it could be a dangerous thing.
10:39 AM on 10/07/2010
OMG. Speechless...almost. These folks...the only people they're fooling is themselves. I assume someone has at least attempted to counsel Shirvell against his stalking of Armstrong, maybe recommended he read "He's Just Not That Into You"? by chance. Yikes. NUT. JOB. Unfathomable that the AG's office has yet to can this clown.
