Peter Bethune: Paul Watson Ordered Him To Sink Sea Shepherd's Own Boat, Ady Gil, 'To Create Better TV' On 'Whale Wars'

Peter Bethune

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Sea Shepherd deliberately sank its own high-tech protest boat after a January collision with a Japanese whaling ship to gain sympathy, the former skipper alleged Thursday in a public spat with the conservation group's founder.

New Zealander Peter Bethune said the futuristic trimaran Ady Gil was salvagable after the crash, but that he was ordered by Sea Shepherd head Paul Watson to scuttle it. Watson denied the claim, saying the decision was Bethune's.

The exchange has exposed a bitter falling out between Bethune, who shot to international prominence because of the high-seas drama, and Watson, the figurehead of Sea Shepherd's campaign against Japan's Antarctic whaling program.

The campaign has drawn high-profile donor support in the United States and elsewhere and spawned the popular Animal Planet series "Whale Wars."

Bethune was at the helm of the Sea Shepherd boat when its bow was shorn off by Japanese whaling ship Shonan Maru 2 in waters off the frozen continent in January. Bethune later boarded the whaler to confront the ship's captain over the collision, and was detained by the crew.

Bethune was arrested and spent five months in a Japanese jail while being tried on trespassing, assault and other charges. He was convicted and received a suspended prison sentence in July, then deported.

He says the Ady Gil was salvageable after the collision but that Watson ordered it to be sunk. Bethune said he and two other activists went aboard the Ady Gill and opened compartments and hatches to let in water, the stuff.co.nz news Web site reported.

Bethune told New Zealand's National Radio he believed Watson wanted the sinking to "garner sympathy with the public and to create better TV."

"Paul Watson was my admiral. He gave me an order and I carried it out," Bethune said. "I was ashamed of it at the time and I'm ashamed of it now."

"It was all done in secret. I was ordered not to tell any of the crew, not my family and especially not Ady Gil, the owner of the boat," Bethune said, referring to the U.S. businessman who funded the vessel.

Watson, a Canadian, said the scuttling of the Ady Gil was Bethune's decision.

"Pete is on camera saying 'yes, I guess we're going to have to let it go,' so it was his decision and actually wasn't mine," Watson told National Radio.

The Ady Gil sank two days after the collision with the Japanese ship. At the time, Sea Shepherd said the Ady Gil was being towed by another of its vessels, the Bob Barker – funded by the former U.S. talk show host – when the line snapped and the Ady Gil began taking on water. Fuel and other potential environmental pollutants had been removed from the boat.

The Ady Gil – a sleek, wave-piercing trimaran that resembled a spider-like stealth bomber – set the speed record for a power boat circumnavigating the globe in 2009, when it was called Earthrace. It took 60 days, 23 hours, 49 minutes and ran on biofuel.

The vessel then joined Sea Shepherd, which used its speed to chase down elusive Japanese whaling ships in Antarctic waters.

Sea Shepherd announced during Bethune's trial it would not let him participate in further protests, but after his release said the ban was a tactic to help him avoid prison and that he was free to rejoin.

Watson said Thursday that Bethune was expelled from the group in October after it discovered the New Zealander had given false information to Japanese authorities about Watson in exchange for leniency.

Bethune said he was speaking out now in an attempt to convince Sea Shepherd's top leaders to show more honesty and integrity.

Glenn Inwood, a New Zealand-based spokesman for Japan's Tokyo-based Institute of Cetacean Research, said both Watson and Bethune had "told so many lies over the last few months it's hard to believe either of them" on the issue of the sinking of the Ady Gil.

Whale conservation groups declined to comment on the row Thursday.

A former conservation minister for New Zealand, which has strongly opposed Japan's whaling in Antarctic waters, told The Associated Press that Watson's credibility and Sea Shepherd's program "have been compromised by this information."

"It will weaken his position and the campaign against Japanese whaling in the southern ocean," said Former New Zealand Conservation Minister Chris Carter, as well as "the validity of Paul Watson's arguments about the conservation of species."

Isn't it obvious about what has really happened?
The Ady Gil thought the Japanese whaling vessel would continue on its course but it didn't and purposefully crashed right into them...
Whilst i am sure everyone on the boat was very upset about loosing their most valuable boat i believe Paul Watson thought he could make this terrible situation work for him and the whole of Sea Sheppard. Paul made the decision to let the boat sink instead of having to tow it then have to go to port early.
Why would Paul want his best boat destroy? He wouldn't! so he decided the best thing to do was the sink it to generate publicity for the whales, which i might add are everyone's main concern not these silly arguments among crew it is the whales who need the media!!!
Paul Watson made the best out of a terrible situation and didn't set out to have his best asset destroyed at the beginning of the season!!! Pete Bethune just didn't like his pride and joy used as a media grabbing tool! Pete Bethune should just accept it and realise that Paul Watson did the best thing to put the whales in the spot light! Paul made the situation look more drastic by having the boat sink- which I am not saying was great- but it did get everyone's attention which was his goal!

Paris, Paul Watson wasn't there when the collision happened, and regardless of whether or not anyone 'decided' to sink the Ady Gil afterwards, I can assure you, after Pete spent the last six years of his life working on the Ady Gil (formerly Earthrace), it's nothing to do with it being a media grabbing tool on his part. Pete went down there to do what he could to help in the campaign. The fact that it ended badly was not what Pete wanted at all.

As for spotlights, you'll find that it's Watson who uses any excuse to put himself in the glare. As far as your comment Paris, that it's time to stop 'these silly arguments among crew', you only need to check out the seriously ill-considered statement from SSCS about the Maritime NZ report into the collision that puts the blame entirely onto Pete to see that it is SSCS that are starting the arguments, not Pete. This is not just about an 'argument amongs the crew' - it is tantamount to libel and bears no resemblence to the actual Maritime NZ report (which I have read in detail and at length).

Check out the SSCS facebook page...look at the number of adverse comments after SSCS posted a link to their 'take' on the report. They are losing supporters hand over fist which doesn't help anyone least of all the whales.

I meant 'larger than life' (see below).

Wow, this is really a disappointment. I fell 'head over heels' for Mr. Bethune's bigger than life personality. I felt he brought a whole new dimension to SSCS and was a tremendous asset to the org. Now to learn that he and Watson are feuding, each pointing the finger at the other...it makes me very sad and not sure who to believe anymore. What an unfortunate turn of events. In some strange way, I feel betrayed... :(

I'm glad this came to light. People can support Sea Shepherd all they want, but they've been exposed as liars before so this news is no huge surprise. Watching them eat their own has been highly entertaining - particularly after Sea Shepherd and Bethune kicked up a stink about the lack of support from the NZ govt during the trial in Japan (completely ignoring the considerable support provided by the NZ consulate staff).
p.s. I am not pro-whaling. I support the work of Greenpeace and legitimate whale research.

all they have to do is get all the film and video that was edited during the campaign to see who is telling what...every exchange that happened between Bethune and Watson was obviously filmed since they are the main characters.

Bethune came off as a hot-head, daredevil. he talked about his "so called love for whales" where was he all the other years when Watson and crew were down there...his two crew mates started whining and bellyaching they wanted to "go home" after the Ady Gil sank and started making threats towards the SS crew.

Watson has been protecting the oceans and whales for 30+ years, where has this dude been.

I agree with the intent of what the SSCS is trying to do, and I don't have a problem with aggressive measures being used to accomplish those goals. What I have a problem with is the obviously overinflated ego coupled with a correspondingly high level of incompetence so evident in Watson. Someone else, without the ego, and with a far higher degree of competency could do far more with SSCS's resources. Watson should stay behind a desk at the office.
11:56 AM on 10/11/2010
what are you talking about?

Watson is a master seaman, he's been commandeering ships through seas no one else would dare sail through for 30+ years.

what have you done with any degree of competency to right a wrong in this world besides sitting at a keyboard accomplishing nothing.

To be honest I loved Pete on this show. He is passionate and driven. But Sea Shepherd and specifically Whale Wars has done more for whales than anything in recent history. They have brought the Japanese hunting front and center into the American field of vision. Let's not pretend that reality shows have anything to do with reality. No one is going to sit and watch a bunch of crew members milling about, eating vegan food, getting into arguments, bored out of their skull while they wait for something to happen. Sea Shepherd has been placing itself in front of the harpoon for decades. Personally I think he wants his own show. He volunteered to go to sea, he volunteered to go aboard the Japanese ship (asking that SS pay his legal fees which they did - over 1 million dollars worth) and then he trashes SS?
I am behind SS. I have been a monthly contributor to their cause for four years.
I'll be here well after the show ends.
I believe in what they do.
Pete is looking for his 15 minutes.

In the 70s and 80s me and my buddy used to play a naval wargame called "General Quarters". It involved purchasing actual metal warships, which were about 2 - 3 inches long. They sold the fast destroyers, the larger cruisers, and of course, the big Battleships. We painted them all the right shade of gray, and boy, they looked so cool on the carpet, which was, to us, the Pacific ocean. I had all the USN ships that participated in the Guadalcanal campaign, and Phil, well he had all the Japanese ships. I still have all the ships. I think i feel like lining up all the Japanese ships and getting out the USN ships and having a wargame, and SINKING ALL THE JAPANESE SHIPS.

Aside from lies, the SSCS organization filters and distorts information. In a 2009 interview with Larry King (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kimcoJc7wcw) Paul Watson informed the viewers all whales were endangered. This was incorrect as the minke, the major of the harvested whales, are not endangered. None of this was mentioned. When asked about the status of the whale populations, Watson was unable to answer the question. How can a conservation organization that goes into the field to protect a population not even know what the population is of the animals they protect? He goes on to deflect the question to a whale species that was no hunted and stated that “the Japanese wanted to hunt them. This is alone is a red flag. A conservation organization that cannot provide basic data to justify what they do is questionable. Of great concern is that this organization has charitable status and all the good people give money to the organization when really they are questionable.

How about at least one link to back up your side of it. I see an expert saying all whales are endangered, and an anonymous poster to a forum defending whaling.

To me the numbers are irrelevant; these magnificent mammals simply should not be brutally slaughtered. Let's be clear: "harvested" is a word used by whalers and pro-whaling sympathizers. The killing of *any* whales is immoral and should be illegal.

"Paul Watson was my admiral. He gave me an order and I carried it out," Bethune said. "I was ashamed of it at the time and I'm ashamed of it now."

When you are busy 'saving the planet', decency and honesty are readily cast aside by some. But the above quote shows that these basic instincts can still shine through.

On the sinking of the Ady Gil , I know (third hand) that SSCS was looking for an "incident" (as with all their campainges) to increase media coverage and fund generation. Viewing of the video taken from the Japanese Whaling ship (on YouTube) shows the Ady Gil under power and accelerating before impact. After the sinking of the Ady Gil there was significant PR generated the there was a significant increase in donations to the SSCS. Salvaging the Ady Gil would have not resulted in these benefits to the SSCS organization. It will be interesting to see what "incident" the SSCS will setup this season. The SSCS has done more damage to the conservation movement than good. What they do on the high seas should not be tolerated by any nation as it boarders on terrorism and piracy. Trailing warps with the purpose of fouling the propellers of a ship can have serious consequences for both ship and crew in the south ocean.
11:11 AM on 10/10/2010
Once again, someone who obviously must have no experience driving a boat (much less a large boat or ship), commenting erroneously on the Ady Gil's actions. I've watched multiple videos from both sides several times, and it is patently obvious that A) the whaling ship intentionally turned into and collided with the Ady Gil, B) The crew of the Ady Gil was thoroughly surprised by the deliberate ramming by the whaling ship, they expected the ship to pass them by, and C) the Ady Gil tried to avoid the collision.....but it was too little, too late.
01:34 PM on 10/13/2010
Watch the video from the Japanese ship again. There are 3 streams of white water behind the Ady Gil. That means it was moving forward into the path of the Japanese ship.
12:03 PM on 10/11/2010
so in other words you support whale poaching.

how about doing something useful with your "third hand".

Either way, the group deliberately sank its own high-tech protest boat. The insurance companies will rightly be suing for their money back. And the Sea Shepherd organization has had its credibility damaged by the "play for TV" charges and false information that the organization been charged with pushing into the media. Appears that they started with great concepts and became corrupted with enlarging their own "media image".

From the first time I saw Bethune on television, I felt he was a loose cannon. He appears to me to have a huge ego. It is tragic that he is hurting the cause and the work of Paul Watson and his dedicated team.

It would seem Pete Bethune is hungry enough for the spotlight to sensionalize his account of the Ady Gil's sinking at the expense of Paul Watson who in fact was not responsible for the decision to abandon the ship.
I have personally spoken with many on board the Bob Barker (other SSCS vessel at the scene) both immediately after the incident by sat phone and in the months since the incident. However the sinking of the Ady Gil was not something decided to improve ratings, that suggestion is completly false and ludicrous. It was a difficult proposition at best to attempt and tow it through the Antarctic Ocean using the Bob Barker. This in additionalt to the constant imperative of joining the Steve Irwin and locating the Japanese whaling fleet. This decision was made on board the Bob Barker which was on the scene, not on the Steve Irwin where Capt. Paul Watson was. As related to me several times, it was Capt Chuch Swift of the Bob Barker and Pete Bethune formerlly of the Ady Gil who agreed to let the Southern Ocean have what was left of the ship.
Ady Gil, the gentlmen who was so generous and donated the stealth vesel bearing his name, should be recognized for having provided the financial support for an honorable and necessary mission to the Southern Ocean attemting to stop the Japanese whaling fleet from their senseless, archaic and cruel destruction of one the planet's most treasured species.

I have been following the antics of the SSCS for years, more from the prespective of what they did to the fisherpersons of eastern Canada and their legacy of hate they left behind. In Watson’s book Earth Force he tells his members to make up data and states that “ the nature of the mass media today is such that truth is irrelevant”. I have come to learn not be beleive anything from this organization, their members or their supporters. They prime mandate is increasing PR, bringing in money to support themselves and the other organizations they are linked with behind the scenes. They are an eco-terrorist organization and use terrorist methods to acheive their goals.

The so-called "antics" are saving lives of whales and other creatures. I prefer to call them heroics.
