The Dilemma Trailer Gay

Universal has agreed to remove the line "that's so gay" from the trailer for 'The Dilemma' under pressure from GLAAD.

GLAAD's press release follows:

October 08, 2010, Los Angeles, CA - Last month Universal shared a link to the trailer for the film 'The Dilemma' with GLAAD. After reviewing, GLAAD called on Universal to remove the scene where the word 'gay' was used as a pejorative from the trailer. Today, after Anderson Cooper also spoke out against the scene, Universal confirmed to GLAAD that the offensive joke will be removed from promotional campaigns from this point forward, including in the trailer currently playing in movie theatres.

"The use of the word 'gay' in this trailer as a slur is unnecessary and does nothing more than send a message of intolerance about our community to viewers," said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.

Anderson Cooper recently appeared on 'Ellen' to talk about gay bullying, and he said he was "shocked" to hear the offensive phrase during the previews on a recent trip to the movies.

"I just find those words, those terms, we've got to do something to make those words unacceptable cause those words are hurting kids," he said.

Vince Vaughn's character said the phrase in the trailer, and his rep tells x17.com he will not be commenting.

i had never heard of this movie and normally i don't watch movies in this genre but i want to watch it just because Anderson Cooper thinks he has the right to tell others what to do. Cooper used his celebrity and job at CNN to force his ideology on others to the point the studio removed the trailer. IMO cooper is the one at fault.

Do you care about gay children who feel they have no where to turn and take their own lives? what would it take for you to stop using the word gay as a pejorative? or supporting those that do?
06:14 PM on 10/11/2010
I hope they leave it in the movie. Censorship is gay.

Doesn't the use of the word 'gay' as something stupid or rubbish reveal how most of us feel about homosexuality? This sort of thing happens all the time. It is considered 'cool' and 'real' to use a word's literal meaning to reflect how we feel about something. It's a practice which in part defines pop culture. Like it or not, there is a reason why the word 'gay' is used to express how stupid something is.

it is hard to believe these terms are still considered funny and even used as a way to draw viewers when so many are working against intolerance and bigotry. We've got to find another way to get our laughs. This kind of humor seems to target the immaturity of junior high students--an age when kids are often under the most pressure from peers. What does "gender" have anything to do with it?

If you are going to argue something at least understand what you are trying to say.

Just to let the Straight folks know, "That's so Gay." is meant about something bad. No different than "That's so Black" about gangs, or "That's so Jewish" about cheapness. Not nice.

People who say that things are so gay sound like ignorant, immature bigots. And it is your right to sound that way. Why anyone would want to sound like a bigot is beyond me. If you insist on using this slur, you should understand that this is what most are thinking about you. The ones who laugh when someone says it are just as immature and insecure as the ones saying it.

I accept the Bible as the infallible Word of God. In Leviticus, God says homosexuality is an abomination to Him, as is ALL sin. We can’t categorize which sins are worse than others. It all has to go! The only way to salvation is through Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior when the Holy Spirit resides in you at that very moment to deliver you from the sins that separate you from God. Gay bashing is wrong in every form. Our beloved Jesus taught us to love our neighbor as ourselves as the second most important commandment. CHRISTIANS: STOP GAY BASHING, DEROGATORY NAME CALLING, MAKING SLURS AND JOKES, PICKETING, PUBLICLY EMBARRASSING AND HARRASSING HOMOSEXUALS. It's the exact opposite of loving them and Jesus is not at all pleased with such ministries. These demonic methods drive them deeper into spiritual bondage. Reaching out to homosexuals with the love of Jesus will foster a genuine desire to find hope, true peace and total freedom from the pain of discrimination. “He who the Son frees is free indeed”. We simply must love each other unconditionally but with the responsibility of telling the truth according to God’s Holy Word when questions arise. Reach out with the holy and pure LOVE, LOVE, LOVE of Jesus Christ or become a partner to satanic oppression. Pray unceasingly so the holy Spirit can work his miraculous magic. I’ve witnessed this, I KNOW IT WORKS!

So since the bible is the "Infallible word of gOD" you must follow all the other laws as well right? Or is it one of those "it's for that period in time" kind of argument? Because if it is so, we are all going to hell for treating women like equals.

There A Few Very Loud Bigots Who Continue To Beat The Drum Of Evil Ignorance But They Will Be Silenced Very Soon With Enlightenment Of The Informed

Being Homosexual In The 21st Century Is Just One More Common Human Variances

In the early twenty-first century, the word "gay" has entered youth parlance as a synonym for "silly" or "ridiculous," a usage that some speakers insist is non-prejudicial, despite its past history of negative connotations.

WOW!!! I can't believe you believe that. So then the whole g@ys can't get married. You know, Prop 8 that PASSED in CALIFORNIA. The few bigots seem to have the majority.

I never get people like you that try to say something is no longer a problem... LIke people that always said r@cism was a thing of the past...Until people came out the woodworks when Obama was elected. We say it was alive and well.

Oh and for the record, polling people on the minorities plight is never a good thing...(just like voting for the rights of a minority isn't). I'm sure if you poll whether r@cism still effected African Americans it would be a resounding no.

I wasn't going to reply, but I saw you posted this a few times and finally had to.

Keep your polls to yourself.

C'mon folks, I'm a screaming liberal pro civil rights for everyone, but language is expressive and gay is a perfectly good descriptive term.

A tricked out Cadillac Escalade is undeniably "Gangster", is that a racial slur?
A Harley is tough and macho, slur against men?

The word gay brings forth instant images of flamboyance and over the top language, style and dress. Some homosexuals promote a "Gay" lifestyle and to pretend it doesn't exist or that we dare not speak its name is hypocritical at best.

RuPaul's Drag Race, or even Project Runway are pretty damn gay, you have to admit you know exactly what I mean when I say that. It's perfectly descriptive, whether or not it's a value statement depends entirely on your own prejudices. You might think of gay as offensive, but I find it to be creative and interesting, not loaded hetero-centric ideas like most of life.

The context of the expression, "that's so gay" is used as a put down, as a synonym for something being inferior or even abnormal. It is offensive. When movie stars say it, it validates those who already believe that there's something wrong with being gay. When gay kids themselves hear language like this, they think something is wrong with them.

Have you not read the papers in the past two weeks about the number of gay boys who have been so harassed that they kill themselves? Your counter examples are apples and oranges, alleged "screaming liberal." People don't kill themselves over being labeled as "macho."

Thanks for the input. Upon further reflection I've decided that it is a pejorative term and the harm it does outweighs its usefulness as a descriptive term. Some idiot could argue the same about the n word, and I'd be appalled at that.

See, I really am a liberal, I'm capable of changing my opinion after hearing reasonable argument.

My only problem with all of this name defining is having an organization dictate what is or is not the correctness for others within a group. I have seen it in the woman movement, the African American movement, in the American Psychological Association's redefining homosexuality as not a disorder, and in organized region. If the specific groups involved does not own the name, but rather, feel obliged to use the name because it is socially acceptable to do so, then we will always come back to a point where we have to redefine ourselves for another generation. The question boils down to "What's in a name?" Alternatively, in some cases, what is the meaning of a label?
