New York Times:

SIX-PACK abs, the rippled midsections that grace models in Men's Health covers and Calvin Klein ads, are beyond the reach of many men, but that doesn't stop them from trying. From 2000 to 2009, the number of men in the United States undergoing abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) more than doubled, to 4,670, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

A friend of mine had a tummy tuck after he lost more than 100 pounds, and his skin hung like a skirt. The surgeon told him it cost extra to carve a new belly button since the first one got hacked off with the excess skin. So he opted not to get one. Now he looks like a freak when he takes his shirt off. Anyone remember the show "Kyle XY" about the genetic boy with no belly button? That could have been my friend -- until he gained back all the weight and then some. Surgery didn't solve the problem. But it saved him from finding something else to do with $15,000 in cash.

The obsession with superficial body shape, muscles and looks is a waste. Real health and real power are internal.

Martial artists practice internal chi cultivation techniques such as neigong, Zhang Zhuan, Tai Chi Chuan, etc. and they don't look like professional muscle builders; they look like Bruce Lee. Those huge thick muscles impede movement and reduce flexibility. Guys who look like body builders are not healthy at all. They have over developed their musculature, become too heavy and inflexible and are internally weak - susceptible to disease, virus, injuries just like average people who don't work out at all. Muscles don't mean health.

Muscle strength is limited and fades with time and age, but chi energy/power, which is internal, has no limit and lasts even beyond death.

This is how many Martial artists and Yoginis can perform seemingly superhuman acts. They are not superhuman at all. They are very human, but the chi power and energy is without limit and it is much more difficult to develop.

It's silly to think anyone would subject themselves to achieve such negligible results. How about just eating a normal balanced meal and exercising 4-5 times a week?

realistically some people can exercise like crazy with not great results. it has something to do with genetics too

Sure genetics give people a predisposition to be fat but it's diet that is a 90% determinant if one is overweight or obese and 10% exercise. People just need to decrease the portion sizes and quit stuffing their faces.

I've been taking a one hour long abs class at my gym for over the past year and it is THE MOST FUN and inspiring thing I do all week. It's so amazing to me how many big muscley men will come for a class or two, maybe three before they bail out. It ain't easy !

It's seriously hard work. And for me - serves as a metaphor for commitment and self-discipline in life.

I have amazing looking abs that have taken an hour a week to get. Not exactly obsessive. Not exactly out of reach.

Just takes work. And patience. Sometimes I find the class easy and sometimes it's hard as *$%!. But I keep going back. Thankful that I have the determination to stick with it.

So many people in this age expect immediate results. It's sad.

I'm surprisingly thrilled to know that at least some of those abs were obtained the same way some women get their gorgeous bodies. Gorgeous and fake.

Cut the carbs, eat a lot more protein and get your butt moving...heavy weight and cardio. The creams will give you hope but not the results good old fashioned restraint and exercise will...

Somehow I think that most men are too smart to be duped into buying a lotion that creates instant abs.

No smarter or dumber than women getting duped into buying this kind of garbage. If we start making men feel worthless for not being perfect, the same way we do women, they'll buy it.
