'Damn It, My Mom Is On Facebook' Filter Stops Online Embarrassment (VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/10/10 12:47 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:00 PM ET

Chances are that if you're under a certain age you've had to deal with your mom finding out about Facebook. Now that your mom has a profile, you'll have to censor yourself when talking about drinking, sex and your political and religious beliefs - especially if you're in college.

Thankfully, "Saturday Night Live" has the solution in the form of a "Damn It My Mom Is on Facebook" filter. Simply write or post whatever you'd normally put on Facebook, hit the application button, and voila! The salacious details of your life will appear to your mom as something as innocuous as, "Boy do I need new Dungarees!"

The whole social networking fad seems so artificial to me. Was it that bad to make a phone call before? walk to someones house? Was it so horrible to write a letter? yes, with pen and paper. I even liked the occasional email every once in a while. What does Fake book have anything to do with keeping in touch??? All I see is a nation of narcissist intent on wasting time alone instead of real human interaction. You like privacy? You respect others Privacy? don't get a facebook page.

I don't want to snoop on my kids, more importantly I don't want them snooping on me. if I want to know what they are up to we use the old fashioned method called TALKING to them. You don't hear as much but you don't need to sift through their personal lives. Trust them, you can't stop them from experimenting with things, but if you raised them properly they, at least mine, don't go off half cocked and do crazy and illegal stuff. I think the more you pry, the more likely they are to rebel. Instead of being spies, try being parents.

People joining a public social network service concerned about who is going to be looking at their page probably should not have one. I mean, yes one must be cautious about what one says online but that is also true in everyday life so this is kind of silly to me. Most people that I know use facebook to simply keep up with family and friends. If you have something to hide then don't put yourself out there to begin with.

My goodness you sound like you are a bit of a drama queen. How do you get me not minding the government invading my privacy by taping my home phone from my post? I am not concerned about what my family sees on my facebook page because I do not place anything on it to begin with that would be a cause for concerned. I am fortunate to have a family that is not trying to correct a grown woman for making statements that they may not necessarily like or agree with. Just can't get over you comparing illegal wire taping to CHOOSING rather to add a your mother to a facebook page.

Hasn't anyone ever heard of this little feature called lists? Put your friends, parents, coworkers into their own lists and then only set the privacy to the appropriate list when you post something. My parents see a completely different facebook than my friends do.

sounds difficult, I don't have time.
12:00 PM on 10/12/2010
oh it is! so difficult and time consuming. it took me 2 seconds to understand, 7 seconds to create a list then an entire minute to add 20 people.

My mom's 80 and has a facebook account and is always posting to my posts, but I don't put anything on facebook that will "bite me in the a**". In other words, would come back to haunt me in case someone at work was to read it. Besides, if you're worrying that much, Dexter, maybe you should not be posting THAT kind of info, maybe you should keep it to yourself!! ;p

I'm linked to all my sons on FB, I see no problem with what they post, lewd crude or otherwise. They're adults, I'm an adult, I find it a handy way to catch up when they're online via chat, since I really don't like phones. They're more likely to 'ewww' over my posts than I am over theirs lol.

"catch up" aka monitor. Kids can't escape from their parents anymore... what a nightmare.

No, 'catch up' as in catch up on what they've been doing, kind of like what people do when they talk on the phone to their kids or their other extended family members. Hardly a nightmare besides, they're all thousands of miles away from us, they've already escaped :)

My mom is thinking about opening a facebook account. Maybe I should have a "just say no to facebook" talk.

The only reason I'd want to be on Facebook is to look at my adult children's pages, but that's also the reason I don't have a Facebook page. I wouldn't want them to think I'm spying on them.

My sons and my daughter are all on Facebook. I'm linked to all their pages. Fortunately, all of them are smart enough NOT to post anything they don't want the whole world to know --- including Dad and their siblings --- about their lives. And I don't, either.

Another way to make sure your mom can't read your Facebook messages is by CLOAKing them first. Your messages are garbled and only people you've shared your private keyword with can read them. Sorry, mom & Facebook.

No you're not, and there are plenty of things my parents don't need to know (and I'm a 32 year old Mom!) about my life.. And if they don't need to know, it doesn't need to be public. Those who need to know, do.

Good example. And there's some things my kids (and I'm a 59-year-old DAD) don't need to know about MY life. (Who says life stops after your kids are old enough to join Facebook?)

When I started using the Internet at 23, my mother (yes, I live at home for a personal reason) would be all over me telling me to watch what I say and do. And she was always over my shoulder watching what I was doing. Thank god she stopped afterna year. As far as the whole facebook thing, my mom has an account like me and a good many of my family.

I guess she could be in her 50's, but I suspect we'll be hearing more about this family...
