Adam 'Pacman' Jones Wrongfully Arrested After Game

Adam Pacman Jones Arrested Mistake

After Cincinnati lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Bengals defensive back Adam "Pacman" Jones was mistakenly arrested, according to ProFootballTalk.

Thomas Hunter, Jones's agent, told PFT that his client was involved in a minor car accident and stayed at the scene "due to the possibility of a pedestrian injury."

Police arrived and reportedly discovered that they had outstanding felony warrant for "Adam Jones." Before confirming they had the correct Jones, police allegedly handcuffed the Bengals cornerback, who has had trouble with the law in the past.

Despite Jones telling officers that they were making a mistake, the police reportedly kept him in handcuffs for 45 minutes and put him in the police car. It wasn't until they drove two blocks away from the accident when police finally discovered they had the wrong man and released him.

"It was a stupid thing that deprived him of his liberty and embarrassed him and humiliated him in front of everybody," Hunter told PFT. "Everybody saw him being arrested."

He doesn't use Pacman any longer. Quit putting it in "quotes."

There may have been some racial profiling going on here, may have been. But, a few things need to be clear about this:

1. He was not arrested. He was simply detained. He was not charged officially with anything.

2. He was not driving while this happened. So it's not a "driving while black" incident. If he was driving a cop pulled him over simply because he was black, then yes, it would be a DWB.

3. It is not only common, but necessary for police officers to run the names of everyone involved in an accident, even passengers, to determine if anyone has an outstanding warrant.

Does racial profiling still exist? Absolutely it does. This may have been the case here. It may have also been two cops who were a little antsy and neglected certain details, which is also an egregious error.

Driving While Black implies you are harassed after you are stopped. This was the case with PacMan as it is impossible to be detained, arrested or harassed while you are in the act of driving. FYI.

basing an argument on an ambiguous statement which implies something isn't exactly foolproof. FYI.

First time for everything. Sorry Pacman, hopefully Ms. Pacman wasn't too upset.
Via TMZ, the officers heard the wrong info from the dispatcher.
But too bad for him, being arrested for doing nothing is a pain, I've been there and 13 years later, I am still bothered by it.

This was not a case of driving while black. First, he wasn't driving, he drove into something (wrecked). Second, the cops run the licenses of every driver they contact through the system.

A cop pulls up behind you at a stop light, he's running your plates, two blocks later when he changes lanes he's moving on to check another car's plates. They're fishing. This is what they do,

There is still racism and profiling in the police, but the police are never going to let up on black people to be fair. They're just moving in the direction of giving everyone the same nasty treatment.

An oxymoron: 'Pacman' Jones, Wrongfully Arrested
01:56 AM on 10/12/2010
This happens very often. Especially with a common name. Most warrants don't have pictures, and if they do they may be years old. If someone is pulled over, and the officer runs the name and sees a Adam Jones has an outstanding warrant and the name, age and description match, they will hold the person until more info is available. So if some guy named Adam Jones who is a black male, around 5'10" 175-185 lbs and in his mid 20s they will hold Pacman. Now, I don't know if that is the case or not, but it is a good possibility, Adam Jones is a fairly common name.

Also, he wasn't really arrested, to be arrested you are booked, he was detained.

This issue was discussed in the show "The Unit".

Dallas Cop: We are looking for someone fitting your description as part of an investigation.

Jonas: You mean "black"?

When the cop went to the squad to "check" ID, Jonas said, "When you come back, I'll still be black."

I remember that episode. I was shocked the producers took it "there". Hollywood is often in denial about such things because their general audience is too.

That show was sneaky.

For instance, the back story says the Unit was formed in 1979 by the order of the President.

Who was that President?

If there's any doubt you can count on cops to put a black guy in the back of the squad car - just ask Skip Gates, who got arrested going into his own house. Welcome to America.

Well, this is silly. What was he thinking to be DWB? (that is driving while black) What did he expect, anyway?
This sort of reminds me of a story in NBA great, Bill Russell's, autobiography. Mr. Russell spoke of being detained for quite a while by the LAPD. When he asked what it was he was being held for he was told that a car of the same make as his was suspected in a robbery. However, the cops were stumped by his question: "well, what kind of car is that?" You see, he was driving some European sports car that had no identifying symbols or name on it's outside. They were forced to let him go. It seems to be that DWB (driving while black) is a rapidly growing offense in this great land of ours...

welcome to "driving while black" in America!

you can say what you want to about "race-baiting" ... or that we ought to "move on" ... or that we are such a post-racial society ...

this story only confirms what many of us know and live
