Joe Manchin Shoots Cap-And-Trade Bill With Rifle In New Ad (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/11/10 04:53 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:00 PM ET

West Virginia Senate candidate Joe Manchin continues to shape the narrative of his campaign around direct opposition to the Obama administration with a new ad that pushes dual themes of gun rights and pro-coal legislation by taking aim -- literally, with a rifle -- at cap-and-trade legislation.

"As your Senator, I'll protect your Second Amendment rights," Manchin says. "That's why the NRA endorsed me."

Manchin continues:

"I'll take on Washington and this administration to get the federal government off of our back and out of our pockets. I'll cut federal spending and I'll repeal the bad parts of Obamacare. I sued EPA and I'll take dead aim at the cap-and-trade bill."

The West Virginia Governor and Democratic candidate then shoots a hole through the middle of the bill, "because it's bad for West Virginia," Manchin concludes.

Manchin began his clear shift away from Obama earlier this month after national Republicans and his GOP opponent, John Raese, launched an ad campaign aggressively painting him as a rubber stamp for the President.

Last week, Manchin's campaign announced that he would indeed favor repealing the parts of the president's health care overhaul that "allow for the funding of abortions and the provisions that are cumbersome to small businesses."

Later that week, Gov. Manchin filed suit against the Obama administration's supposed "attempts to destroy the coal mining industry" as allegedly perpetrated by the EPA's efforts to regulate water quality in extraction areas.

Manchin has claimed that the suit had nothing to do with his Senate campaign.

If keeping control of the Senate means we have to elect anti-environmental politicians, we may as well let it go.

Palin puts a few targets on a board.... She is a purveyor of Violence. The Dem shoots a bill with a rifle that Obama supports and.............. He's just a DINO. I happen to agree with Sarah and Joe on this one. Where are the leftists today? Isn't this guy a "teabagger" who hates the black president? Come on, show us you are at least consistent in your fake outrage.

Oh my goodness... a Conservative Democrat... One that actually resembles what the party used to be. Not these socialist thieves that infected it everywhere else. Anybody who sues the EPA is a good man.

Careful, do some reasearch. I am originally from WV, he's playing the conservative game now to stay alive. Research his friends.

Yes, you are correct. I'm from WV. Contrary to what most believe of the state I'm very liberal. Manchin is definitely playing the conservative game. Pathetic really, but that's politics. If he stands his ground he'd be afraid to lose. A politician standing their ground would make pigs fly. However, he is a much, MUCH better option than Raese. Politicians like that are one of the reasons this country is so messed up.

Say what you want about his policy positions. I'm down with a Senator who's more concerned with his own state than national party lines.

It's a pretty classy adv. I think yesterday we managed to I.D. the rifle he is using as one of the lower priced Remington models in a long-action caliber, like maybe .30-06 or .270. Remingtons are made in the USA by the way.
02:48 AM on 10/13/2010
.270 would be my guess... I'm just wonder if he actually shot it or if it was like one of those commercials where the basketball goes out of the picture then straight into the goal

Awesome... there are decent dems out there.

Electing folks like Joe Manchin doesn't really help the Democrats. They are DINOs. They will vote with the Republican caucus in most cases. If we are going to get the things done that are important to true progressives, we need to start pushing those types of candidates. As with Bill Halter's campaign (which sadly fell short) in Arkansas, we need to show these blue dogs that there are alternatives to their conservative ways.

What would have been better?

"Cap and Ball" the cap and trade. And have this gomer fire a musket at the bill.

Missed an opportunity there to tie in all that mountain heritage with the trashed streams and right to bare.

Both sides of the political fence are really a joke. They try to pretend they're not all on the same team but the smart people know that's a lie, that's also why it is so easy for both of them to flip flop from one day to the next, totally over it....

Regardless of what you think about Cap and Trade, this ad will play well in WV.
