Adam Lambert: 'Tough Decision' To Obey Malaysia's Anti-Kissing Rules

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Adam Lambert pledged Tuesday to obey Malaysian government rules that forbid the flamboyant, openly gay glam rocker from kissing anyone onstage at a planned concert this week, but called it "a tough decision."

The "American Idol" runner-up, who is touring Asia, told The Associated Press in Hong Kong that his "main goal is to keep people entertained - not to make them uncomfortable." Lambert is slated to perform Thursday at a stadium in Muslim-majority Malaysia's biggest city, Kuala Lumpur.

Lambert has agreed to heed restrictions against stripping, jumping and kissing onstage, said Yuen-See Cho, a representative for concert co-organizer Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia.

"It's something I'm doing out of respect," Lambert said in an interview with the AP ahead of his Hong Kong concert. "It's just one little thing. Man kissing another man is something that government really doesn't appreciate."

"I think it's a tough decision to make, but to me, there are so many amazing fans in Malaysia that it's more important for me to be able to come and do my show there for them and entertain them and thank them for supporting me," he added.

Lambert is known to sometimes lock lips with a male musician during his concerts. At last year's American Music Awards, he also dragged a female dancer around by the ankles and had a dancer simulate oral sex on him.

The 28-year-old's planned concert has drawn objections from the opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, which in the past also criticized concerts by Gwen Stefani, Avril Lavigne and other artists it considers to be bad role models for youngsters.

Cho of Sony Music said Lambert had "agreed to respect the guidelines that are set by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage."

"We have shared with him in terms of what are the do's and don't's ... dressing and stuff like that."

Malaysia's Islamic opposition party claimed Lambert was advocating homosexuality, but the singer said on Twitter late Monday that his show "promotes living ANY lifestyle that includes the freedom to seek love and intimacy. Gay, straight, bi, young or old. It's all inclusive."

The party also pointed out that Lambert is known for racy performances.

Lambert's music is popular in Malaysia, and many of his fans say his sexuality doesn't bother them. Sodomy - even consensual - is punishable by 20 years in prison in Malaysia, but prosecutions are rare.

In recent years, several female Western pop stars, including Stefani and Fergie, revamped their wardrobe and avoided skimpy costumes to perform in Malaysia.

Really? You think so? I'd think boring would be the last word to describe him. lol

Sorry, man.

What can I say. He's lame. Hence his nickname, among many others, Lamebert.

Another brave choice to be slightly less contrived during an overproduced performance .... alert the Nobel people.

I recently caught Lambert in concert after a Tampa Bay Ray's game. Never really was a fan, but I figured I stick around and catch the show. Awesome performer.

Would love to see him in person. I LOVED him on AI. His voice is amazing. I don't really care for the all-out flamboyance myself but he is an incredible performer.

Adam is not only talented, but a really good guy. This is a tough compromise for a man who is so open about himself, but to have the respect for his fans and their government is admirable. I never fail to be reminded why I am such a fan of this budding superstar.

I don't understand why it's such a tough decision...just take it out of the show, move on to the next venue. Some people don't like seeing hetero couples kissing it isn't necessarily a thing against gay couples.
01:52 PM on 10/13/2010
yep.. that is why we hear get a room.. cause nobody wants to see it.

I definitely respect him for making this decision. I don't think it's a tough one at all. His primary focus is on performing. This is a concession to be able to perform. Seems easy enough for me. He's not being put in a position of denying who he is for heaven's sake...:-)

I am sure what they object to in his show is just a very small part of his concert. No kisses and change wardrobe off stage. Why not perform and take the money and run.

Stand up for what he believes in and not do the concert or take the money and run? Why am I not surprised by his decision?

Adam Lambert will be iconic.. He has it all, mega talent, charisma ,good looks and a kind heart...

IMO he's our next American international super star so get ready because" you aint seen anything yet"

I hope so. I really do. I taped and recorded all his performances on AI. Bought his new CD... which I wasn't in love with but still enjoyed. He'll find his niche and hopefully realize he doesn't need all the gimmicks. His talent is enough.

I almost find it amusing when some Americans are horrified because PAS will stage a protest at Adam Lambert's concert. I find it amusing because a lot of people in the U.S. have treated him just as badly if not worst. He's been picketed several times by the U.S. version of PAS ie, The WBC. The WBC has stood outside his concert venues yelling every slur their little minds could think of. ABC has banned him (and still to this day) and go read comments on any article tagged with the name Adam Lambert or go on YouTube and watch the hate spewed by U.S. citizens. Truth be told I wouldn't trade places with him for a million dollars. He has a lot of fans but he has a lot of hate thrown at him just for merely existing. Maybe some day people will learn homosexuality is not a choice & it's been around since the creation of mankind. Maybe people will learn that just being yourself is not "shoving your lifestyle down our throats". Try imaging that heterosexuality is frowned upon and a crime. Try imagining people glaring at you and throwing hate your way for showing affection to your other or for merely existing. I couldn't.
