Democratic Congressman's Ad Touts Cooperation With John Boehner (VIDEO)

Bill Owens John Boehner Campaign Ad

Rep. Bill Owens of New York might have a 'D" beside his name, but he's out with a new ad that attempts to distance himself from Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and instead endear himself with Minority Leader John Boehner.

"Wall Street people sure know how to lie with numbers, Bill Owens didn't vote with Nancy Pelosi 93% of the time," the ad says, refuting a prior attack ad by his GOP opponent Matt Doheny. "He voted with the Republican leader 63% of the time."

NRCC spokesman Ken Spain has since responded to the ad, telling Politico's Ben Smith that "[t]he numbers speak for themselves, since coming to Congress, Bill Owens has been a nothing more than a reliable vote sitting in Nancy Pelosi's back pocket."

The Washington Post breaks down the actual voting records, however, and shows that Owens might be correct in his statements, but that there is a large degree of spin going on in the ad:

The voting statistics come from the non-profit, independent website OpenCongress.org. The ad refers to two different ways that the site calculates voting percentages for members of Congress. It is true that, according to OpenCongress.org, Owens votes with his party 93 percent of the time. It is also true that Owens and House Minority Leader John Boehner have a 63 percent voting similarity. But when you match Owens's and Pelosi's voting record, they only share an 83 percent similarity. So Owen's and Doheny are both spinning the numbers -- Owens in choosing not to mention that he votes with Pelosi 83 percent of the time and Doheny in claiming that the 93 percent voting similarity is with Pelosi as opposed to the Democratic party.

Just more icing to the "to go forward put it in D, to go backward put it in R" analogy cake, Matt Doheny's history includes a boating under the influence charge. Guess we should, "if you want to go backward drunk, put it in R".

And Boehner has voted with Pelosi too. I hope the DCCC realizes what an opportunity they have missed by not supporting Justin Coussoule in his race against Boehner. The Minority Speaker is scared to death - at home running ads and doing heavy campaigning for his own seat while the whole world thinks he's the next speaker! Wouldn't it be funny if an Army Vet knocked him out of his own seat with no help from the Dems?

WHAT?!?! A democrat running on the platform of "I'm almost as Republican as my opponent. Pick me! Pick me!" Unbelievable. This has to be a joke. Dennis Miller is behind this. He's gotta be! Or, maybe Kelsey Grammer. This has to be fake.

The new Democratic slogan for 2010:

We really are just Republicans.

I hope they all get voted out. Time for real conservatives to take charge.

Looks like the political toast is buttered on the Boehner side, not the Obama side.

But he might be toast anyway.

We have a similar situation here in S.W. Pennsylvania. Democrat Jason Altmire is bragging about how he voted against Obama and Pelosi every chance he got.

I would normally vote for all of the Democrats, but I'll skip over Altmire. I won't vote for his opponent, but I won't vote for him either. Let him handle the crocodiles alone.

As much as I hate to see a Republican win another seat, I wouldn't mind that happening here. If he is going to portray himself as being more of a Republican than a Democrat, then the voters in his district may as well as have the real thing. It would serve him right.

Semi-off-topic: Did the NY Times run that "expose" on John Boehner that they were talking about? I've checked in at nytimes.com pretty much every day, but have seen no sign of it.

STRANGELY no, but I would think that rumors of it will arise again.

I think the NYT should investigate harry reid's affairs.

Really? And I guess this would mean that Boehner is not such an immoral guy if somebody else is stepping out on his spouse. As for the NYT not running the story, assuming they have facts to back it up; it would show how the corporate media is in the pocket of big money. Maybe at the NYT they think that if they prove their loyalty to the GOP they will not be bashed by the conservatives. Well, guess again. The NYT and other newspapers will always be fodder for them in their stump speeches. It is always easier to attack the messenger rather than the message itself. This way they don't have to defend the indefensible. Nothing to see here folks......

And now he's raising money by selling T-shirts picturing himself and Boehner with the caption "I Voted With Stupid."
