Chicago's Biggest Vegan Party (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 10/12/10 10:02 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:00 PM ET

Chicago VeganMania united Chicago's vegans this weekend at its second annual event.

The event was produced by EarthSave Chicago and aimed to celebrate the city's vegan culture, businesses, sense of community and cuisine. The event took place Saturday at the Pulaski Park Fieldhouse.

Attendees had the opportunity to sample an array of vegan food, hear from vegan chefs Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Fran Costigan and listen to live music.

"It took place during an unseasonably hot autumn day," said John Beske, spokesman for ChicagoVeganMania. He described the event as a giant vegan house party that drew about 1,600 people.

Agent Scully, I tend to think it's very easy here to be vegan. Yes, it's a dream in California and NYC, but we're getting there. It really is not difficult. I think it's a lot easier to find vegan food at the inexpensive restaurants, like Irazu, Sultan's Market and Penny's Noodles, than at the expensive places.

Marie, thank you for volunteering at Chicago VeganMania! We had such a great volunteer crew. Like I wrote to Scully, I think there are a lot of options in and near Chicago. I agree wholeheartedly that Oak Park could use a vegan restaurant and it's only a matter of time. I live in Oak Park, so I have a vested interest. :)

I was a volunteer at VeganMania and I had so much fun! Met a lot of nice people. It was so good to see so many people (thousands) that were either vegan or interested in vegan food. Now if only Chicago and it's suburbs had more options for vegans to eat at. There are a lot of vegetarian places to eat at, but vegan places are few and far between. I think Oak Park would be a perfect place to open up a vegan restaurant.

Great to see Chicago catching on. I recently visited California and was stunned at the ease of ordering vegetarian and vegan meals everywhere I went. It was never a problem. In Chicago I've enjoyed fabulous vegetarian meals at Tru and Charlie Trotters, but it would be fabulous to have a larger selection all over the city, in inexpensive restaurants.

Looks fun! Isa Chandra Moskowitz is probably the most beloved vegan out there. I think there should be a campaign to bring her to huffpost.

I was there, and it was an incredible day. Hundreds of people with huge smiles on their faces making new friends while grooving to music and holding big plates of vegan food. It really seemed like a community coming together and creating a new world. I didn't want it to end, and I'm ready to come back and experience it all over again.
