Gibbs To Rove: Here's Our 'Enemies List' Now Show Us Your Donors

Robert Gibbs

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs on Tuesday mocked criticism from Karl Rove that the President had a veritable "enemies list" who he targeted from his Executive Office perch.

Asked about the charge leveled by the former Bush strategist, Gibbs resorted to rudimentary animation. "Swing and a miss strike three," he said, before pulling a blank piece of white scrap paper from the podium and adding: "Let me do this: I'm releasing our enemies list. No one is on it. Now can I see the donors to American Crossroads?"

The group that Rove helped found, American Crossroads is one of several major conservative entities that have spent heavily in this election season without fully disclosing the names of its donors. In recent weeks, the White House has worked hard to turn that secrecy into a liability, launching a full-scale attack on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in particular after reports surfaced that they take in foreign funds. The attack itself has been controversial, as no definitive proof exists that the Chamber has used international money on campaign ads it's run (the business lobby won't disclose their records but insist that they have an internal filter in place). But when asked about those fact-checks by a reporter from Politico, Gibbs seemed undeterred.

"It doesn't bother me at all because I don't see, if I was an enterprising reporter that worked at some place like Politico I might ask the Chamber of Commerce to let me see their donors," he said. "That seems like a pretty simple way to solve the debate...They say they take money from overseas, we know they are spending $75 to $80 million running ads. Lets see where the money comes from to pay for those ads. There is an easy way to prove it all wrong."

Pressed specifically on the counter-argument that several progressive institutions (including labor unions) don't disclose their donors either, the White House Press Secretary again turned to Rove.

"Let's be clear because this is a very convenient Rovian trick," he said. "If the Center for American Progress is running ads as the President said standing before the American people the House and Senate and the Supreme Court, the President believes those donors should be identified. If the Center for American Progress, or Think Progress or Josh Earnest's Future America plan is not actually running the ads, the Disclose Act was, if you are running the ads you should disclose who is paying for them. That's what the President believes."

Karl Rove, the mad scientist of politics, is at it again!

All I have to say is that any organization Democrat or Republican that doesn't have as part of it's donation acceptance a "we may freely identify all donors" is corrupt and suspect. Currently it looks like the Republicans have the upper hand because people see them as pro business. I have no doubt Democrat organizations have foreign and domestic parties who would be suspect as well and are covering for them. If Obama wants to be above reproach he should release a list of who and what amounts were donated to him. That would show what a bunch of louts the republican organizations are.

HP will not allow my full post so I will resort to this. I have asked you twice your feelings on outside companies/orgs which could very well have the financial backing of Al Quada financing politics in the United States and you have yet to answer but have resorted to stupid childish name calling which I am a bit too smart to respond to in the manor you would like, to deflect the question I am asking you. So again can you please answer the question? Today a partial (small) list was reveiled and every donor was an outside company who have put a lot of money to fund political campaigns of the Republicans. Do you think they have the best interest of this country, the USA in mind or would like to have their agenda carried out? This country will not be destroyed by direct outside monsters but inside monsters .... US citizens who worship money and power and will take any contribution from the enemy just to gain political points and cause chaos & confusion. Will that sit well with you, watching these outside groups funding the ripping apart of this great nation? You are a patriot right .... and you do know it is the last refuge of tyrants (not exactly quoting the correct saying but space is limited)! Please grow up and respond to my question and stop with the nonsense!

As a matter of fact I do.

It is run by a handful of rich, multinational corporations who have tricked local small businesses into joining. The small businesses think they are "networking" to increase their customer base when in reality, they are acting as cover for the manipulative corporations who have taken over our political system.

May Karl get back to you on that, Gibbs? He's a little tied up at the moment, double-counting the $13M your ingenious attack strategy has netted over the past week. Oh, but don't stop your hilarious mocking routine. Republican contributors are enjoying it. No, really, they are.

Lighten up.

How many small animals did you harm on November 5, 2008? Pulled some ponytails, perhaps?

You remind me of Khan. As in Star Trek, the Wrath of. Bitter. Enjoy every win you can, Ricardo.

You can keep your scrubby House of Reps for 2 years. Investigate away. Rally the h8. Expect anything to come it from a legislative standpoint? Hmm.

"You lie," "he11 no we can't," Boehner-Bachmann Neverdrive for TWO YEARS in a row! The people will sour and we'll get it back in 2 years, keep the WH and you'll graduate to more dangerous acts November 5th, 2012.

I'm enjoying your bitterness. No. Really. I am.

hah I mean I don't think democrats are quite getting it. The more they are making these ridiculous claims the more they are energizing people and businesses to make big contributions to the republican party. Democrats need to get back on message and start talking about how wonderful they have made things since taking full control of the government that historical day in January 2009.

Oh wait...maybe they should remain off topic...don't want to bring too much attention to all their achievements.

I guess you are not to clear on the law at the time of Obama's birth he may be "native born" as in "anchor babies" not "natural born" as the Constitution requires.

We will start with this then:

In such context, such court is clearly saying they mean the same thing as there are only two classes of citizens, native and naturalized. There is no third class and no court has ever said there is a distinction between native and natural born. What is sad is that Mario has spent so much time on this because he is unable or unwilling to understand that the Supreme Court unambiguously defined what a natural born citizen was more than a century ago and such ruling has never been questioned by another court. The vattel argument was made and rejected. And such definition was clearly necessary for the disposition of the case and hence is not dictum. If Mario could even understand the law of standing, he will find that any court will just do exactly what Ankeny did in dismissing all arguments in light of the Supreme Court’s clear interpretation in Wong Kim Ark.

Robert Gibbs, hypocritical transparency crusader

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/10/13/gibbs/index.html

BY GLENN GREENWALD

regarding the White House's legitimate arguments about disclosure, there is some major hypocrisy taking place. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has been leading the charge against the Chamber, citing what he called "the spirit of disclosure" when telling CBS' Mark Knoller this earlier this week:

I think it's important when you don't know - when you don't know who those people are, when you don't know what their agenda is. I think as the president has said that it is a threat very fundamentally to our democracy.

But what makes it so infuriating to watch Gibbs make this argument is that Gibbs himself -- back in 2003 and 2004 -- was heavily involved in exactly the same kind of anonymous-funded negative campaign the Chamber is running now, when the brand-new advocacy group for which he was the spokesman invoked the same excuses as the Chamber is invoking now to conceal its donors. As Chris Moody recalls, when Howard Dean was the 2004 Democratic front-runner, a new group abruptly popped up -- calling itself "Americans for Jobs, Health Care and Progressive Values" -- and, shortly before the Iowa primary, began running an extremely ugly anti-Dean TV ad campaign, featuring images of Osama bin Laden, along with ominous claims that Howard Dean would fail to Keep Us Safe, that he could not "compete with George Bush on foreign policy."

There ya go with the name calling...funny thing is, I seem to recall Gibbs as the spokesman for an outfit that was sabotaging Dean's presidential campaign...when Dean ask who was providing the funding Gibb's outfit refused "until the law requires us to"...this is breathtaking hypocricy from this administration.
Obama solicited funds from overseas during his presidential campaign and even accepted pre-paid credit card donations that were anonymous and untraceable. Americans for Progress is funded by Soros, now a naturallized citizen, where did the funds come from for that organization that is an arm of the Obama White House? The gall of these people, fuc*** amazing!

News Corp., the parent company of Fox News, has donated $1 million to the Republican Governors' Association and the GOP-aligned Chamber of Commerce. Last week, the Politico reported that News Corp. head Rupert Murdoch said that News Corp. "didn't expect" the donation to become public, raising the question of whether the company has made any other political donations that haven't become public.

The facts are not as Fixed News would have you believe. I will explain the graph to you. The red lines are for contributions to GOP candidates; the blue ones to Democratic candidates. Do you notice that in years prior to the 2006 election, the red lines are bigger going all the way back to '96 (GOP majority in Congress)? The bigger lines mean that more money was given to that party.

Even my 8 year old niece can figure this one out. GE gives to who is in power or likely to get it in an election. They really don't care who it is.
