15 Beautiful Clock Towers Around The World (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 10/13/10 04:41 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:00 PM ET

In the age of the iPhone and Blackberry, people are wearing watches less frequently and instead relying on their phones for the time.

Before the age of wrist-watches, cities built clock towers high above the ground so people all over could see what time it was.

Some clock towers are straight-forward and not so attractive. Others, however, are simply stunning.

Here are the Huffington Post's picks for the most beautiful clock towers around the world.

How about the Bromo-Seltzer Tower in Baltimore. I love that clock-tower building.

Paper Ballots WORK. Unverifiable e-voting doesn't

Too bad they didn't use a wider shot of The Peace Tower in Ottawa. The neo-gothic Parliament buildings frames it nicely.

The back view of Parliament Hill (showing the Ottawa River) is more picturesque, too.

This would be a good shot, for example...

For Pete's sake, if you're going to pretend to be an expert about something, at least get your facts correct.

The clock tower attacjed to Parliament inLondon is NOT called Big Ben. That's the name of the bell that chimes the hours. The building that houses it is St Stephen's Tower.

(And that pretty blue bridge at the other end of town is Tower Bridge, not London Bridge)

There's a story that when that entrepreneur bought the old London Bridge to reassemble in Arizona, he thought he was getting the Tower Bridge!

I'm pretty sure that's apocryphal, especially if you've ever seen the bridge (in Havasu). It ain't the Tower Bridge, but it's pretty impressive. On the other hand, I lived about a half mile from both of those bridges (Bricklayers Arms) and I couldn't believe what a disappointment the current bridge is. Worse, with the London Bridge Station at the south end, it's virtually impossible to replace it without destroying a couple hundred bus lines for a couple years. So we're stuck with what's an ugly bridge for I-95 in New Jersey, never mind THE London Bridge.

I have visited five of these and feel a thrill when they do their hourly chimes. Making a point of being at a good clock tower at noon is worth what might seem like an inconvenience. I love this type of article. Thanks!

I was standing on the roof when the bells at Notre Dame rang. It was awesome in the true meaning of the word.

This is what happens when HuffPost uses an honest headline, no one reads the story.
