NEW YORK — State liquor license records show that New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino had once collected rent from two gay clubs located in buildings he owned in downtown Buffalo, according to a published report.

The report in the Daily News on Wednesday comes just after Paladino told a group of Orthodox Jewish leaders that he opposed schools for what he called "brainwashing" of students into thinking that being gay is just another choice and "not the way God created us."

The newspaper reported that a club named Cobalt operated as a gay bar in 2004 and most of 2005 and was run by Paladino's son, William. It was housed in a building owned by one of Paladino's many companies, Huron Group LLC, the newspaper said. The club was run under another corporate name.

Sometime in 2005, the club began catering to straight clientele, the Daily News reported.

A photo tagged in a Flickr set as "Buffalo Pride 2006" shows a float with "some of the cute guys from Buddies II (the local bear/leather bar)." From 2005-2006, Buddies II operated from a Paladino-owned building. On Monday, the GOP candidate called gay pride parades "disgusting."

The newspaper said liquor license records also showed that the other club, Buddies II, operated under the name Queen City Entertainment in another Paladino building in 2005 and 2006.

Buddies II described itself as a "bar where anyone and everyone is welcome (and) prejudices are left at the door," the News said.

Paladino's spokesman, Michael Caputo, did not immediately comment on the report.

The report comes a day after Paladino apologized to the gay community for what he called his "poorly chosen words," in his speech to the Orthodox Jewish leaders. He said Tuesday he should have edited more of the phrasing out of the speech he gave Sunday.

Paladino said he opposes same-sex marriage but would actively recruit gays to his administration. He has also mentioned his gay nephew in saying that the discrimination he and others face is a "very ugly experience."

In a brief telephone interview with the New York Post, the nephew, Jeff Hannon, said "Obviously, I'm very offended by his comments." He declined further comment.

The 23-year-old has not been seen at his uncle's campaign headquarters in Buffalo where he works since the remarks, the Post said.

Paladino has blamed some of the latest controversy on press reports that included phrases that were in an earlier version of the speech that the Orthodox leaders had distributed to reporters but that he had struck out before delivering it.

In a Facebook post Tuesday, Paladino wrote that he should have "chosen better words":

Yesterday I was handed a script. I redacted some contents that were unacceptable. I did also say some things for which I should have chosen better words. I said other things that the press misinterpreted and misstated," Paladino said in a Facebook note. I sincerely apologize for any comment that may have offended the Gay and Lesbian Community or their family members. Any reference to branding an entire community based on a small representation of them is wrong.

I feel so sorry for Paladino. Imagine. Having to accept that "disgusting" money from his gay clubs. (Or are only the parades disgusting?)

Whatever. Blame it on the cue cards. And 'dem Orthodox guys. And what's up with that neph-yoo, turning all sullen? Blame the neph-yoo.

wow, audacity of hypocrisy this shows one more time that all politicians are the same no matter if their from the right, left, or center they will say what their followers want to hear just to get sympathy and get that vote and the worse thing of all is that people actually believe them.

The Democratic Party has been too timid about pursuing gay rights mainly because of the vitriol they know will come from the right wing "Religiosity Brigade" in response.

President Obama has finally begun in earnest to do away with DADT which amounts to "Tell Me Lies, Tell Me Sweet Little Lies" as the old Fleetwood Mac Song goes

It has finally been struck down as unconstitutional so the Jeebus Squad really has been cut off at the knees with their last ditch whine in the Senate being made moot. The Administration has appealed the ruling but not because they disagree but they feel the coup de grace should come from a higher Federal court.

With Prop 8 and the millions they wasted destroyed by the courts and DOMA also found to be nothing more than "Discrimination, Codified" what will the Religiosity peddling Bible-Humpers have left ?

If and when DOMA is overturned all those state laws and constitutional amendments are also gone, just like the laws that prevented the President's parents from marrying in many states , not to mention Clarence Thomas current marriage. They can't bring up any more "Show Your Religiosity" initiatives to drive Conservatives to the polls any longer either

Okay. Paladino is a serial over-embellisher. Beware the man who needs to apologize for everything he says. This is a man who does not think before he speaks. Or maybe he thinks but is just clueless.

How about that "I was handed a script" bit. Where did the script come from? Perhaps his puppeteers like the Koch brothers, who are paying millions to elect people who don't worry about pollution or outsourcing? Apparently, with a substantial portion of the US population, it is easy to bamboozle them into voting against their own economic interests by shouting some key words that any bigot, misogynist, homophobe or racist is well familiar with,.

Look a the demonization of "sanfranscisoliberalnancypeolsi" and how this has been accomplished, particularly by the Chamber of Commerce. Of course, the people who provide the billions of dollars to use against Democrats don't REALLY care about where she's from , and Gingrich has already led the Republican voters around by their noses by corrupting words like "liberal" and "Democrat"....take a look at Gingrich's little manipulative lexicon that he made specifically for the purpose of screwing with people's perceptions.

Anyhow, the Pelosi bashers are cramming at least 3 well-worn appeal to bigots into that one long word., and then they are insisting that every Democratic candidate is epoxied to her. How dumb do people have to be before they fall for that kind of crapola...the kind that cons them into voting against their own best economic interests and those of their families?

LOL>...I think that politicians are actually comedians. How can you take them seriously? They tell each particular audience what that audience wants to hear. This man will do the same if elected...LOL. Politicians are actually public clowns. I am laughing are you?
