Spike Maynard's New Ad Accuses Opponent Of Taking Money From A 'Terrorist,' Even Though GOP Has Also Accepted Funds

First Posted: 10/13/10 01:31 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:00 PM ET

West Virginia Republican congressional candidate Spike Maynard has a new ad attacking his opponent for accepting money from a "terrorist." The problem with the ad? Democratic Rep. Nick Rahall gave the money away years ago, although the same man gave money to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), which has endorsed Maynard as one of its "Young Guns."

"Disgraced Congressman Rahall supports Obama and Pelosi," intones the narrator of Maynard's ad. "But who supports Rahall? One Rahall campaign contributor was Abdurahman Alamoudi, who is now in jail for financing terrorism. ... Money from a convicted terrorist? Does anyone know the real Rahall?"

WATCH:

In 2004, Alamoudi received a 23-year prison term for "illegal dealings with Libya that included his involvement in a complex plot to kill the Saudi ruler." Before then, he was a generous political donor, giving to politicians such as Hillary Clinton, Dennis Kucinich, and George W. Bush.

Rahall did indeed take money from Alamoudi. But in October 2003, The Register Herald in Beckley, West Virginia reported that Rahall was giving the money away:

What a jailed Muslim activist intended as a campaign donation years ago to Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., is destined for the Middle East as a means of spreading Christian gospel to Palestinian youth. Rahall offered to turn the $600 donation, given to his Keep Nick Rahall in Congress Campaign Committee by Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi, over to Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley, and its pastor took him up on the proposal. "What we're going to do is pass it on to our missionaries who work in the Middle East to help youth there," the Rev. Paul Blizzard said. "We'll pass the donation on to the Gaza Baptist Church in Gaza for spreading the gospel."

Other politicians, including Bush and Clinton, also returned the money.

Alamoudi also donated $300 to the NRCC in October 2002, and that group did not return the funds. Maybard has received the prestigious "Young Gun" status by the NRCC, meaning he's one of their top prospects. The Huffington Post contacted the Maynard campaign about whether it is also planning to condemn the campaign committee, but we did not receive a response. The NRCC also declined to comment.

This is the third racially tinged ad against Rahall, who is a third-generation Lebanese-American. As The Huffington Post reported earlier this month, the shadowy West Virginia Conservative Foundation also released an ad warning of Rahall's outreach to Arab-Americans on behalf of the Obama campaign. In September, the Maynard campaign put out a spot accusing Rahall of propping up Chinese jobs.

UPDATE: Maynard Press Secretary Matt Dabrowski sent The Huffington Post a statement on the new ad:

Nick Rahall has a pattern of supporting and associating with out-of-the-mainstream elements on the Mideast peace issue. If you look at Rahall's record, the Alamoudi donation is merely the most flagrant instance of this pattern.

Whether it be accepting money from radical sources, visiting Yasser Arafat on multiple occasions, speaking to the Saddam-controlled Iraqi parliament in opposition to the Iraq War, voting against Israel's right to defend itself, or voting against military assistance to America's allies in the region, Nick Rahall's record is outside the mainstream of American opinion on the Mideast issue. I don't think any neutral observer would consider Rahall's record "mainstream," and West Virginians have the right to debate that record.

Publicly finance elections, till then, the USA is not a republic nor a democracy, but a bought and paid for plutocracy, just what conservatism was founded to conserve. All political contributions are bribes, plain and simple. Conservatism wants to conserve the monarchy and their ignorant poor serfs, why do you expect public rationality from them? Conservatives will do their best to kill reason, and logic, and inflame emotions and hysteria, it's what they do. Please realize, prove to yourself, that the founders of the USA were liberals fighting against the conservative British monarchy. The modern conservative are still fighting that battle, and winning.

Oops! I'd make sure I was clean before I'd start making accusations. Lots for dirty money out there in politics. ALL politicians should be aware of the sources of their cash. If they take funds from questionable sources they should be willing to take the heat for it.

This is why the Karl Rove doesn't want to disclose who is paying for his ads. Think about it - Karl Rove - front man for Bush. We all know the Bushes were friends with the Saudi Royal Family AND the BIN LADENS. It's not too far of a leap to assume donations might be coming in from the Bin Ladens - the family of the man who masterminded the worst terrorist attack on US soil. Karl Rove is possibly taking money from Terrrorists. :)

For one thing: I do not believe that he is a terrorist for a second. IF there was any attempt to kill some leader of another nation it was the CIA and they would ahve succeded as ever. No other terrorist organization on earth has their record of success in "eliminating" competition and democracies only to supplant them with massmurdering, massraping f**kheads we love so much.

But secondly: if the CIA and the corporations it works for have committed terrorist acts on other nations - why are THEY not mentioned as terrorist funders?

Oh, right, how could I forget. Terrorism is only bad when it kills 25 Americans. When our terrorists massacre thousands of Russians, muslims, Afircans, South Ameicans, .... - that is ok because we are the good guys. And when good guy use terrorists that is ok.

Sometimes the so called morality in our government makes me gag.

Still waiting for a GOP politician to step up and be a leader. Seems that moral issues aren't going to cut it anymore.

The frightening thing is that these moral lapses mean NOTHING to the republican faithful. They have one concern and one concern only: screwing the liberals. They wouldn't mind if Stalin was running on the republican ticket as long as he was leading in the polls.

Republicans: too corrupt to lead. To corrupt to be trusted with America's money.

Yep, it's just a zero sum game to them. Winning is the only objective and any means to that end are justified.

They have no moral standards.

I keep wondering who the first Repulsive Partier will be who proves to have integrity, is honest, compassionate, truly is for American citizens, isn't bashing gays, isn't a bigot, isn't ignorant, is educated, has a gentle spirit, is truly interested in America's well-being and on and on... does any one out there of one, just one, Republican who can fit this mold? Didn't think so but I'll keep an open-mind and keep waiting for the good news.

Lets be fair, typical members of the modern GOP used to be rare, like Jesse Helms or southern segregationists. Moderate GOP, fiscally conservative but socially progressive used to be the norm before the "southern strategy".

Even the far right Barry Goldwater was pro-choice, and considered politicizing the issue nonsensical.

This type of moderate GOP, whether Jim Jeffords, Charlie Christ, Bob Dole or Ike all were abandoned by the Grand "old" Party when it morphed into the party of "No We Can't" on its way back to the gilded age workhouses of Wm McKinley.

If they exist, they can't get past the primaries. The "base" is just that- base. I used consider myself a republican but the party left me to ride on the crazee train years ago. They have become a truly frightening group to behold.

The main difference between repoublicans and democrats, and the one that determines who votes for them i might add, is a simple one to understand. Give a republican candidate a simple question and they will respond with a simple answer tinged with emotionally laced wording, a democrat will respond with a simple answer usually tinged with emotionally laced wording. Give a republican a complex subtle and difficult to soundbite question and who get a simple answer loaded with emotion inducing responses, the same question when given to a democrat will induce a complex thoughtful question loaded with large words a realizations that the world is made of grays blues yellows and not just black and white.
