Education Conference To Focus On Teacher Contracts

Posted: Updated:

TAMPA, Fla. — Federal education officials are teaming up with teachers unions to hold a national conference on labor-management collaboration.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan says the gathering will promote school reform by highlighting examples of "progressive" teachers contracts across the U.S.

Duncan says agreements in Denver, Pittsburgh and other cities ultimately help students succeed through provisions for teachers like peer assistance and performance incentives.

The conference planned for early next year will include national, state and local union leadership as well as superintendents and school boards.

Duncan made the announcement Thursday at an event in Florida marking a new collective bargaining agreement for Tampa-area teachers.
