Denver Airport Rabbits

AOL Travel News:

In the category of weird but true, Denver International Airport may have a problem with pesky rabbits, who eat cars. Yes, cars.

Traveler Dexter Meyer tells KUSA-TV he parked his brand new Turbo Diesel Volkswagen Jetta at the Pikes Peak Parking Lot at the airport as he headed off on a vacation. And it was eaten.

too bad these rabbits aren't eating the actual cars but rather the wiring inside of the cars. anyone who has ever had a rabbit knows that they'll munch on wiring of any sort. can we please stop with the misleading headlines?

Sounds like a car dealer plot to increase repair revenue. That or the rabbits are drinking fracked water.

Given that DIA is surrounded by open fields with, presumably, far tastier, natural stuff, why in the world would the bunnies prefer to munch on automotive wiring?

warmth from cars that were recently parked, and shelter. Wiring is just convenient to chew on (& perhaps copper wires provide something that the surrounding area doesn't supply in their diet?)

VICTORIA, British Columbia — The European rabbit, the source species for every pet rabbit variety, was introduced long ago to places as far afield as Australia and North America. While cute and cuddly, the little lagomorphs breed, well, like rabbits. There’s no doubt of the species’ proliferative potential around the campus of the University of Victoria, which has become overrun with bunnies. Hundreds of visitors convening there over the weekend to discuss literature and nature were bemused by the flocks of cottontails nibbling grass as students and campus workers passed without a second glance.

The school’s environmental studies students created a stir in March when their newsletter, Essence, published a semi-tongue-in-cheek recipe for “ Rabbit Restoration Stew,†aimed at drawing attention to how the rabbits were damaging the landscape. The piece also noted that the local source of meat was a low-carbon alternative to industrial agriculture. The editor, Heike Lettrari, explained in local papers that the rabbit recipe was designed to provoke, not actually get students out stalking and killing rabbits.

The university started a public relations campaign last year to discourage feeding and is also considering various ways to cut the population, which is starting to spread into nearby neighborhoods. “The status quo is not an option,†Neil Connelly, the university’s director of campus planning and sustainability, said last year.

f&f! We have the same problem with feral rabbits here in KELOWNA, British Columbia. It all started with irresponsible pet owners who decided they did not want a rabbit anymore so they dropped them off in the parks around town.

someone ate my micro-bio!

okay, I doubt that dwarf dutch bunny in the picture ate the cars, lol.

interesting chapter of "when animals attack!" this is what happens when you build on their turf. they were here first.

if you feel the need to do something, airport people, time for bunny birth control. I am not in favor of killing them but time to put feed out with birth control. btw, my hubby parks there all the time. it's the risk you take.

That rabbit in the picture may look cute, but don't for a second think he wouldn't slit your throat if given the opportunity.

Scary ecoterrorist rabbits on airport property! Where are the TSA when you need them!
02:52 PM on 10/17/2010
I've always felt they should be eradicated given their large carbon footprint - this just seals the deal for me.

Those Wascally Wabbits!
Seriously folks, a bit of ferret musk keeps the mice out of our homes in the N.E. so why not use some predator musk around the lots to keep the Thumpers away from your bumpers?
Just a dab'll do ya, so it doesn't have to irritate a human nose, just Bugs's.

It's the rabbits way of saying "don't tread on me." It's their way of protesting all the rabbits who were carelessly ran over on the roads by these speeding murder weapons. Let them have their little revenge.
