'Sesame Street' Song Teaches Black Girls To Love Their Hair (VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/15/2010 8:42 am Updated: 05/25/2011 6:00 pm

"Sesame Street" is tackling beauty issues, teaching all girls to love their hair with a song entitled, "I Love My Hair." Styleite has helpfully transcribed the lyrics. Here's an excerpt:

I love my hair, so I must declare:
I really, really, really love my hair.
Wear a clippy or in a bow,
Or let it sit in an afro,
My hair looks good in a cornrow,
It does so many things you know, that's why I let it grow.

This is just a brief introduction as to why addressing the self-hatred that comes with having traditionally ethnic hair is useful ...

Let's not get twisted. There is a purpose and a season in all things. Right season, right purpose.

When I watch this video it makes me want to cry. Sometimes black women are made to feel bad about our hair even among other black people. It's always been that notion of "good" hair vs "bad" hair. This video is very positive and inspirational. Hopefully it helps everyone see how beautiful and unique black women are. FYI, I love my hair! :)

I love this video and I love Sesame Street. My kids learned so much from that show when they were little.

I wish my daughter loved her curly hair, but, unfortunately, today's fashion dictates bone straight hair for caucasians. Both of my daughters iron their hair even though I tell them it is not good for their hair. Maybe they will grow out of it one day.

Let's ALL love black girls and black boys hair, dreadlocks, bald white heads with liver spots, redheads, purple hair, mohawks because diversity is God's blessing and Heaven will be even more diverse than here. So, people, get ready! Start now to REALLY appreciate how you look no matter how you look. Love and celebrate others BECAUSE THEY LOOK DIFFERENT. Forget corporate pop culture ad brain washing and be comfortable with yourself. Nice loving act by the song writer. Congratulations!

I appreciate this video for what it is trying to do, teach young black girls that they are not less than. That is an important lesson because our hair will never change. However, what no one seems to be acknowledging is that black girls are the only people on the planet with hair like this. It's not just the "white girls" who have "good hair", it's the Asian girls, the Indian girls, the Hispanic girls, the Aboriginal girls. It's been pretty hard to get right with my hair when everyone around me essentially has the same type of hair - and it's nothing mine.

I love it, I love it, I love it. If I would've seen this as a little girl I probably wouldn't have spent 12 years of my life frying my scalp with dangerous chemicals. I don't knock my sisters that want to straighten, everyone does what's right for them. My only wish is for black women and the world to know that how their hair is naturally is also beautiful (and not a political statement). I love my haaaiiirrr, I love my haaaiiirrrr!

Have you ever seen Chris Rock's doc? Good Hair- it's very interesting, points out what culture influences us to do to change ourselves for approval by no one and everyone. And Chris Rock is, as usual, really funny.

I love this video! The earlier they learn to love their hair the better! I used to get my hair relaxed, then later, blown out, straightened, etc. It would grow for a while then I would loose large sections of my hair. I was in denial about my hair for a long time. Now, I'm completely natural and I love it!! My hair not only has my hair grown back, it's thicker than its ever been!

I'm a black girl and I love my hair. I love that I can do anything to it. I can braid it, do cornrows, twist it, dread it. Everything. I love my hair too.
