Rand Paul Attacked Over Secret Society Connection, 'Aqua Buddha' Controversy In Conway Ad (VIDEO)

Rand Paul Secret Society Aqua Buddha Attacked

With the election for Kentucky's open U.S. Senate seat just weeks away, Democrat Jack Conway is out with a new campaign ad taking aim at Republican rival Rand Paul over controversy surrounding his affiliation with a secret society during his college years at Baylor University.

"Why was Rand Paul a member of a secret society that called the Holy Bible 'a hoax' -- that was banned form mocking Christianity and Christ?" asks a narrator in the 30-second spot. "Why did Rand Paul once tie a woman up? Tell her to bow down before a false idol and say his God was 'Aqua Buddha?"

A profile on Paul published by GQ earlier in the election season first called attention to the Tea Party-backed hopeful's connection to the "NoZe Brotherhood." The following excerpt lends context to the questions raised by Conway's camp in the ad:

The strangest episode of Paul's time at Baylor occurred one afternoon in 1983 (although memories about all of these events are understandably a bit hazy, so the date might be slightly off), when he and a NoZe brother paid a visit to a female student who was one of Paul's teammates on the Baylor swim team. According to this woman, who requested anonymity because of her current job as a clinical psychologist, "He and Randy came to my house, they knocked on my door, and then they blindfolded me, tied me up, and put me in their car. They took me to their apartment and tried to force me to take bong hits. They'd been smoking pot." After the woman refused to smoke with them, Paul and his friend put her back in their car and drove to the countryside outside of Waco, where they stopped near a creek. "They told me their god was 'Aqua Buddha' and that I needed to bow down and worship him," the woman recalls. "They blindfolded me and made me bow down to 'Aqua Buddha' in the creek. I had to say, 'I worship you Aqua Buddha, I worship you.' At Baylor, there were people actively going around trying to save you and we had to go to chapel, so worshiping idols was a big no-no."

Following the release of the profile, Paul was quick to come out and deny the jaw-dropping account.

"No, I never was I involved with kidnapping, no I was never involved with forcibly drugging people," he said during an appearance on Fox News. "Do we live in an era where people can come forward anonymously and accuse you of things and then all of a sudden I am supposed to spend the rest of the campaign defending myself against anonymous accusers who say I kidnapped them? The story just borders on ridiculous."

The alleged female victim at the center of the controversy ultimately came forward and said she was a willing participant in the seemingly strange activity. She told the Washington Post, "There was an implicit degree of cooperation in the whole thing. I felt like I was being hazed."

Last week, Politico released a report offering further insight into NoZe and what Paul's ties to the group could mean for his campaign:

Issues of the newsletter published by Paul's secret society, the NoZe Brotherhood, during his time at Baylor reveal a more specific political problem for the Kentucky Republican: The group's work often had a specifically anti-Christian tone, as it made fun of the Baptist college's faith-based orientation.

As for the new ad out from Conway aiming to capitalize on the controversy, Paul campaign manager Jesse Benton called the spot "shameful and despicable" and suggested the Democratic candidate "stepped way over the line" with the attack.

You guys think this is funny, huh?! One of these days you will all bow down and pray to Aqua Buddha, or else he will banish you all to infernal hell fire...

I gotta say, that's got to be the worst political attack ad ever. I mean, it's just too weird to make any sense out of, but even irrespective of the content, of it being poor taste or not, or its lack of political relevance, it's just not effective to challenge anyone's religiosity. Everyone tends to be more christian during a campaign, and it's impossible to convince a believer that someone is fake or not. I'm not accusing Paul at all of being a fake, that's for him alone to come to terms with, I'm just saying that even the cheapest 10-cent televangelist has a devoted flock and they can't be told otherwise. It's like in the Ed Wood movie when the whole crew gets baptized to get funds from the church-- the devout preacher takes their faith at face value, and it should be left at that.

The worst part is that Paul was so open to criticism for his bizarre stand on certain issues, but this ad normalizes it all.

So he jokingly told another idiot to pray to "Aqua Buddha"? That would've made me more likely to vote for him. LOL

The commercial was a stupid waste of money. Rather than hammer on Paul's stance on the issues critical to Kentucky, Conway used the Republican strategy of character attack based on a very old incident in order to prove...what? Voters will now focus on that because Paul will exploit it and play the victim card. I'm sure that what Conway says is true, but why dilute the message that needs to be stressed by piling on a personal attack. I think that he may have shot himself in the foot and handed the election to Paul. Too bad that Howard Dean isn't the DNC chairman this year. He would have led the party to victory.

Exactly, as if the tea party needs more victimization credits!

Rand Paul is kind of looney.Lots of folks find god to put their past behind them. It is a convenient political tactic. Look at George Bush he put his first 40 yrs of life off limits by finding jesus he could never have been elected without it.Mr Paul is the same.

I always vote Democrat and I have campaigned for several, but I would not mind Rand Paul in Congress. Our government is spending and wasting too much money and too much government money is going to the well connected.

That is not a fair criticism; First he didn't say he was registered as a democrat, he said he winds up voting D. Second there are plenty of people in the continuum of opinion, who might end up one either side (Colin 14 words Powell comes to mind).

as for Paul, he is a bit looney; but this Aqua Buddha betrays a healthy cynicism of religion; while the kidnapping betrays batsh!t credentials. Likewise his other thoughts are swiss cheese of contradictions. Good luck.

I might not mind him in Congress either, in the hope of him pulling another silly prank like this. We could use some more comedians in that barn.

I would hope Cjris Matthews is as tough on Paul as he was Conway. Can I get a Junior Paul Badge and go running for one of the highest offices for six years without being asked any background questions about unethical behavior or justifying any of the amazingly hypocritical actions I have taken in the past? Rand was clearly rattled, it took a half hour for him to even calm down. His performance was immature, defensive and childish. Not much of a gentleman either. Paul should of "manned up" and shook hands. After all, in a debate isn't that protocol?

Swiftboaters did the same thing to democrat candidates..Yes, what is done in the past shows a person's character. Do I believe we all change after 30 years? I would hope so. But why would a man get so rattled and not just answer the ad? The swiftboaters had no mercy attacking soldiers who fought for this country including one who lost his legs!

Eagerly awaiting Chris Matthews interview with Rand Paul, if he gets one..which I doubt as the tea baggers have band together with their "I'm not answering any questions" OR DIRECT FROM THE GOP HANDBOOK,,,Can't win or even argue on the issues, so play the "man" card. Pristine O'Donnell: "Mike Castle's tactics are un-manly"; Sharron "Obtuse" Angle: "Man up, Harry Reid"; Rand Paul: "Run a race as a man."

The Press had better figure out how to do their job. I'm all for empty podium debates - I love what Lettermen did to McCain. It's a job, take the interview.

See, if the government wasn't intent on pushing Religion down our throats, I would agree. It's not content, thus I care.
