BANNED: 10 Items You Can't Bring To Campus

First Posted: 10/18/10 06:37 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:05 PM ET

It seems like every time you turn around something new has been banned from a college campus (lest we forget elementary and high schools). While some seem justified (alcoholic soda pop) others may be excessive (bottled water.) Below, check out a list of ten items and practices that have been banned -- or nearly banned -- from campuses across the country.

Do you approve of these? Have bans been implemented on your campus? Let us know!

Well, I suppose it is a good thing that I have no intention of attending the Massachusettes College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, huh? What would become of my extensive veil collection then?

When I was a student-cafeteria worker at UT-Knoxville, I stole a cafeteria tray to use as a sled during the first snow. Hundreds of students went down a big hill, drunk, and 2 ambulances were waiting at the bottom.
The only time I have seen quarters to be dangerous was when I was watching TV pro 'rasslin in the 70's, and a wrestler dude pretended to knock a guy out by hitting him with a roll of them.

Cornell has a big hill between the campus and the main freshman dorms. During the winter, cafeteria trays continually disappear from the uphill dining hall, and appear at the downhill one, somewhat worse for wear. It wasn't viewed as theft, just as, umm, reallocation and repurposing.

One small problem with tray-sledding: if you're out there long enough, and are wearing jeans, the ice will eventually crystalize on your backside, and so you won't stay on the tray long enough to make it down the hill...

My friends and I were actually sober when we did this, but it was definitely worth it because two of them had never been sledding before (and one had never seen snow)!

Common sense should tell you that electronic cigarettes are actually quite safe (aside from the nicotine itself). Might be a distraction in the classroom, but banning it indoors all over campus seems a little extreme.

It's still smoke, unhealthy and stinky. Keep that stuff outside.

Our freshman year residence hall advisors requested that if we were going to smoke marijuana in our rooms, we should put damp towels in the crack under the door so they wouldn't have to notice it. But at least there wasn't much tobacco use.

"This might be a moot point, as it is currently illegal to import e-cigarettes into US. "

How come every time I go to a comic or toy convention someone is selling these then? How many products are there like this?

At least last year, they were selling them in the mall. I call bogus on the illegality claim.

Some make sense; fire pits, motorized furniture. Some don't; veils?

In Utah the legislature made it illegal to ban handguns at public colleges and universities. Of course, they made an exception for privately-owned schools like Brigham Young University, which has always banned handguns on campus.

Actually surprised that Ohio State falls into one of these slides! Campus dining locations usually don't have trays, and all of them have a bring-your-own-bag policy.

Look as much as they think they can ban whatever they want YOU have to let them know that you are the customer. Find another university that's not acting so silly. After all you're paying your tuition, right??

Laptops? Seriously?
How about you just toss a test or two at them that will sort it all out? If they don't learn at the last chance of college that they will not be successful if they can't focus, then banning the distraction doesn't do them or their fellow workers a bit of good.

Because they are distracting to the people around them.

Whether you are a sales clerk in a busy store or an engineer running a test in a busy factory, you MUST find a way to focus. Nobody is going to ban those distractions for you.
