Tony Hopfinger, Reporter Detained By Joe Miller's Security Guards, Speaks Out About Ordeal (VIDEO)

Joe Miler Controversy

The Alaska-based reporter who was briefly handcuffed and detained by security detail for Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller offered additional details about his ordeal in an interview with The Huffington Post on Monday.

Tony Hopfinger, who edits the website Alaska Dispatch, said that the roughly 25 minutes that he was detained in a empty corridor with only one private security guard watching him, was intimidating, maddening and cause for concern about the treatment of the press by political candidates.

"Getting handcuffed by somebody you don't know at a public school, no one had said it was a private event or cast it that way, I mean intimidated, yeah [I was]. But I guess I was more pissed off. Miller, I felt, was going to answer my question on the reprimand part," said Hopfinger.

"I think, just like in other parts of the country, the media is finding itself having a hard time doing its job in this political cycle because, whenever we ask questions, there are certain candidates out there who decry 'lamestream media' or whatever. Mr. Miller has had plenty of time to answer questions. He has been given plenty of opportunities. He somehow believes he shouldn't be questioned about his background and yet he wants a job in six years, to a post where there are only 100 in the entire country, and we are not supposed to ask questions about anything of his past. There is a little bit of shoot the messenger. It is happening up here, and other parts of the country. There are certain candidates who just want to turn this around and act like it's the media causing the problem. That has always been there, that element. It is just more ramped up this political cycle."

On Sunday, Miller's private security guards handcuffed and detained Hopfinger after he tried to ask the candidate about his time at the Fairbanks Northstar Borough. Miller was accused of using borough equipment in the unsuccessful 2008 attempt to oust state Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich.

Hopfinger said that he followed Miller through the school hallway, hoping to get an on-the-record explanation about the issue. At some point, he said, he found himself alone among reporters and "surrounded by a bunch of security guard types and Miller supporters." Miller never told him to stop asking questions, he said. But his backers did.

"I figure I'm at a public school and they are telling me I'm trespassing," he said. "And it was just a matter of seconds, I'm challenging this trespass issue and the next thing you know they got me detained and I'm in handcuffs and they put me in another corridor of the building. So for 25 minutes no one even knew where the hell I was... They said we were going to call the police and I said, 'Fine, call the police.'"

Hopfinger said that both he and his paper have not yet ruled out considering legal remedies. But his preference is to let Miller's actions "speak for themselves."

"Right now, we will look at whatever options we need to look at," he said. "I think really, at the end of the day, I would just prefer to see Mr. Miller [answer the questions]."

Miller's campaign put out a statement after the incident saying that Hopfinger "physically assaulted another individual and made threatening gestures and movements towards the candidate" - charges denied by Hopfinger. The Alaska Republican's office also has said they didn't know that Hopfinger was a "blogger" (he's not, the Dispatch is a for-profit start-up news website that employs four reporters, two of whom have won Pulitzer Prizes for their reporting).

Miller has been critical of the Alaskan media, saying that they focus on irrelevant issues and he has instead opted to appear frequently on Fox News. "We've drawn a line in the sand. You can ask me about background, you can ask me about personal issues -- I'm not going to answer," Miller said recently.

He has been especially critical of the Alaska Dispatch, saying "one of the major investors, publishers in that blog is a max donor to the Murkowski campaign." Miller is the lone candidate in the Senate race refusing to attend the site's sponsored debate (which is taking place, ironically, tonight).

Drop Zone Security handcuffed journalist Tony Hopfinger at a Joe Miller campaign rally. Predictably, Anchorage Prosecutor Al Patterson wouldn't file charges against DropZone owner William Fulton, or the 2 active duty army soldiers who seized the journalist. Hopfinger was asking Miller embarrassing questions, as journalists will do. The Alaska Militia have boasted a special relationship with Alaska law enforcement through their association with officers of the Anchorage Police Department. Although Fulton is a dangerous nut case, he cuts a wide swath because he is supposedly protected by the Alaska Justice System. Everybody knew that Patterson wasn't going to file charges against Fulton and the Army soldiers - he would never do that. Normally charges would be filed against journalist Hopfinger to help their friend, DropZone owner Fulton. Fulton asked that Hopfinger be arrested, in spite of no grounds for arrest, as a favor to keep Fulton's insurance rates from increasing. Normally that would be standard practice, but the Police officer was a little too astute for that, with media cameras watching. If prosecutor Patterson could have squeezed any kind of guilty plea out of Hopfinger in a plea bargain, Hopfinger couldn't bring civil suit. Normally that would be one goal of Patterson's Prosecutor's Office. However, prosecuting a respected news editor in the glare of a hostile media was too much. Fulton is not be the brightest bulb in the string, and he may still be trying to figure out why the Alaska justice system isn't backing him, since he's their

Oh poor Tony Hopfinger, just another paparazzi wannabe...we all know this was just a cheap publicity stunt by a desperate attention-seeker looking only for his 15 minutes of fame in which to discredit Joe Miller.
What do you suppose would have happened if you ambushed Lisa Murkowski, shouting and shoving your camera in her face as you blocked her from walking where she was trying to go? And then pushed one of her people aside as you continued to accost her? You wouldn't be sitting here whining about how mistreated you are. I'm thinking you'd be changing the bandage on your broken nose.
Not that you could get much uglier. It's too bad we have this video of you to look at.

I was poking around Google Maps curious at what the Drop Zone looked like and came across this in Street View:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=spenard+Alaska&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=45.553578,93.076172&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Spenard,+Anchorage,+Alaska&ll=61.186994,-149.909825&spn=0.013175,0.045447&z=15&layer=c&cbll=61.186888,-149.909775&panoid=wXDLKI1HcSHXz5tY2tfjBA&cbp=12,302.96,,3,3.37

Looks to me like Fulton standing in back of his store, which interestingly, to me anyway, is on the corner of Spenard and McCain Loop Way. Can't think of a better fruit loop to name a way after.

This gets much much worse!
Miller is DIRECTLY TIED TO Alaska Milita!
Big update at Palingates right now!

It's proven that Joe Miller knows very well who he is paling around with. Also very enlightening the remark: "He also believes change will occur with the new group of Senators." on the Alaska Citizens Militia Blog (screen captured for all to see...in case it disappears):

Goons and the descendants of brown shirts. The extended video of this and the aftermath demonstrate a complete ignorance of the constitution by those "who would restore our freedoms and take back our country".

Joe Miller chose a security firm for his campaign event which is not only unlicensed, but also right at the heart of an extreme militia group, with the owner of the security firm being a local commander of the militia and also the main supplier.

This Alaskan militia is headed by the notorious Norm Olson, who played a major role in the radical militia movement in the 1990's in Michigan, a movement which is at least partly to blame for the Oklahoma bombing.

Thanks for the information.

I think there's a larger story to be told here; hopefully, Miller's ties can be exposed before he manages to force his way into office.

Not only are the "Drop Zone" personnel liable for criminal kidnapping charges at the local and Alaskan State levels, they are also liable for FEDERAL CIVIL RIGHTS charges in addition to any other criminal charges AND as Active Duty military personnel, they fall under the auspices of the Uniform Code of Military Conduct (UCMJ). I would say there are several JAG officers ingesting copious amounts of coffee and Rolaids right now.

my, don't we think highly of ourselves Mr. Miller. You're not that important, and you don't need that kind of protection. Hope this reporter gets satisfaction from this ridiculous retaliation from that big baby Miller.

When OJ Simpson went to a hotel room in Las Vegas to get back property he said was his, he was charged with kidnapping for saying "No one is leaving this room until I get my stuff back. Those words alone prompted the charges. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks about OJ, the point is what Mr. Miller and his crew did was way worse. OJ is in jail and these guys are not. I only use Mr. Simpson as a reference to illustrate my point that words were enough to receive a charge of kidnapping and if that’s the case then physical actions should warrant the same charge.

There's so much wrong with the Miller Militia Players it is unfathomable. Miller is more than willing, ready and able to game every system we have-he wants the money. Rational folks get that.

Drop Zone Security is an outstanding arm of the Waffen-SS.

They ignore Federal statutes prohibiting active duty military from political missions and act faithfully on behalf of Her Miller.

Sieg Heil!!

As a former Security Policeman in the USAF the use of active duty personnel is direct violation of the 1878 Posse Comitatus law pertaining to use of military personnel to enforce civlian law. At the very least these "Security Guards" should be severly remprimanded and possibly tried in a military court of USMJ and discharged from active duty.
