Sharron Angle Tells Hispanic Students They Look 'A Little More Asian' (VIDEO)

AP/Huffington Post   CRISTINA SILVA First Posted: 10/18/10 05:13 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:05 PM ET

LAS VEGAS — Nevada U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle is seen in a new video making an unusual comment about race, telling a group of Hispanic students that some of them look "a little more Asian."

In a meeting with Hispanic students Friday, Angle defended campaign ads that lean on images of dark-skinned men to blast rival Harry Reid's record on illegal immigration. She claims she didn't know the people in the TV spots were Hispanic.

A new video of the meeting released by the Las Vegas Sun on Monday shows the Republican candidate arguing that it is difficult to pinpoint someone's race.

She tells the Hispanic students that some of the students look "a little more Asian" and says she herself has been called Nevada's first Asian legislator. Angle is white.

Angle "says she herself has been called Nevada's first Asian legislator." I heard a political reporter from Nevada interviewed today on "Talk of the Nation" and he was at loss to where Angle came up with this line. The underlying gist of his comment, was that Angle's statment was a lie and she just made it up.

Some of the Nevada electorate were interviewed, and while they were to a person dissatisfied with Reid, they thought that Angle was, essentially, a lunatic and wouldn't vote for her. Let's hope this turns out to be the case. I'm not so sure, I mean, look at Michele Bachmann. She's not running on all cylinders, but it doesn't seem to make any difference to the people that vote in her district.

Wow - this woman is a Maroooooon! You get what you vote for people. If you want to vote strict party lines based on some misplaced pride - you will get someone that will destroy and chance of getting us out of this mess that we have. Sharon Angle, you may be a nice woman and neighbor - but you should not be governing. Just the fact.

I don't think she's a nice woman - to me she represents total and complete hypocricy... She believes that we need to abolish Social Security, Medicare, and the VA, but she's happily getting her husbands government pension and tax-payer provided insurance!

We look Asian because we are Native Americans, we are not Hispanics. The Spaniards slaved our Indigenous ancestors, why should be now embrace a European heritage when we are Indigenous to this continent?

I was about to say, 12,000 years ago, hispanics were Asian! I wonder if Sharron Angle believes the world is that old?
11:44 PM on 10/20/2010
Nope, the bible says it's only 5,000 years ago, and you know that god wrote the bible, so it has to be the truth.

Angle is just so embarrassingly shallow that she thinks the rest of the world is too.

The grumbling was obvious as she began her back-tracking to "melting pot"....lol.
07:27 AM on 10/20/2010
Oh God, she tried to make the "colorblind" argument but just ended up sounding ignorant.
01:30 AM on 10/20/2010
to her credit (reluctanly) her overall point in context was meant to be inclusive, as "melting pot". Ironically, many Hispanics have "Asian" features because the peoples of Central and South American are a blend of Native Americans (Asian) and European (invaders/settlers) but she is so ackward and clueless in how she points this out that she comes across as insensitive.

She has the exact tone in her voice of a teacher I once had in the South that, in the most reassuring and hopeful way, spoke of the day when the descendants of the black students in the class would have relaxed hair and lighter skin, having been away from Africa for so long, "just like normal people." She meant it as inclusive too. In general, sadly, she was a nice lady.

But it was still bigoted swill.

Finally, a plausible explanation for that strange bit of surrealism she vomited. F&F.

I think I've finally figured out what Angle was saying when she said she was "proof" that America is a melting point and that people once called her Asian.

She thinks if you live in America long enough, you turn white. Just like she did.

Bingo. I posted this above, but it's a better reply here:

Sharron Angle has been called Nevada's first Asian legislator? And Angle is caucasian?. What is shocking to me is that Angle essentially told a group of kids that she has no cauc!

TMI Sharron. TMI.

The thing I notice not at all in the media about this is--last decade, Nevada and Vegas in particular were enjoying a boom of sorts. I know a number of people from Chicago, certainly, moved out there(I got a job once just because of one such emigration). Now, that means there are a good number of people from back east and from CA probably still living there despite the downturn. So I'm wondering, how are they reacting to Angle, and how big a tilt in the race are they and in what direction?

Thank you! Please be sure to get out the vote! The Republicans are counting on Democrats being lazy voters this cycle - we can not let that happen. Not after the Bush error/era!

Rather than appearances, she was probably coupling typical stereotyping with the fact that many of them were obviously smarter than she is, to conclude that they must be Asian.

She got confused. She didn't realize Latinos spoke English. And for hours afterward she repeated, alone in a room in a voice that gave chills to her aides in the hall, "Tancredo. Lied. To. MEEEEE."
