Keeping Fear Alive: Stephen Colbert's 17 Best ThreatDowns (VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/18/10 08:45 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:05 PM ET

Now more than ever, the world is a scary place. Luckily, Stephen Colbert is around to hold our hand, look us in the eye, and confirm how truly terrifying it is. Few public figures are brave enough to champion the "March To Keep Fear Alive" (now, after joining forces with Jon Stewart's rally, the "Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear") but Colbert's weekly "ThreatDown" has been doing his part to remind viewers about the horrors of the world since "The Colbert Report" began.

The segment has often been a highlight of the show, counting down that week's biggest threats to America -- and more often than not, that list includes Stephen's arch-enemies: bears. But he's also taken swipes at everything from environmentalists to zombies to Isabella Rossellini. Watch some of our favorite ThreatDowns, and be sure to vote for your favorite!

Well we got two choices, Green or black tea. Right now we have great black tea. Green is a little alien for me. There is such a thing as white tea, but it is from immature tea plants. Does that say something to you???? I sure hope so!!!!

Ah yes, halal: kosher for people who hate the people who invented kosher. Yay!
04:50 AM on 10/19/2010
Actually, Islamic law recognizes kosher as an equivalent of halal. And one of the wives of the Proiphet (saaw) was Jewish. Some of the first Muslims were of Jewish heritage.

So....... the jokes on you.

'cept alot of them have been recently indoctrinated by their nonfree press and political happenenings in the middle east to actually hate their fellow "People of the Book". So the guy is right and it's not Joke. If you surveyed at least middle eastern Muslims you'd find that they hate Jews. Their press confounds Jews with radical Zionists in Israel. In...I think its Saudi Arabia (sorry if I got country wrong) a pediatrician wrote on the front page of the national newspaper that Jews use Muslim children's blood to make Matzo. This in last ten years. In interviews, alot of University students, even, believed it. It's that bad.

In 9 of 18, "Happiness", Stephen's joy-down outfit looks a lot like that of Stuart Smalley.

If you can't touch a metal cart, where are you going to put your polyester pants?

Shoot the mountain pine beetle! So we can save the bears! So we can shoot them! Stephen is right! Do it now!

Do you mean you don't understand him, or, for some reason you can't go to the comedy central home page?

The Threatdown is good but my favorite part of Stephen's show is The Word. Very often it is brilliant as well as funny.

How about doing a top 15 or so of The Word?

oh...that...
Well, a lot of them took their bullet and are waiting for Sharon Angle's call to go to second amendment rights. Of course, it could be a little lame.
They all only have the one bullet.

I've always liked Colbert's comedy and characters. I don't usually watch al of the "Report" but am amazed at the outrageous influence that fear has become in our lives and government. Cheney gave fear unprecedented popularity laying groundwork for destructive policy and political lobbying.....It's now a big part of the cold war mentality that gave birth to the Tea Party and is the central pillar of Glenn Beck's brand. For keeping this awareness alive, I salute Colbert.

I think more Americans should get out into the big world and do a little traveling. They might find out the world is not as scary as they think it is.

It always amazes me that those with their god and their guns and their macho are always so afraid of everything.

I'm glad to see stories about my personal hero Stephen Colbert allowed on HP. I feared he was too scary and dangerous to report on or let people comment about.
11:50 AM on 10/18/2010
Anyone but me ever notice that Colbert always "affectionately" calls Bill O'Reilly "Papa Bear" yet considers bears one of the greatest threats to the country? Love it...
