Apple's 'iPad 2' Won't Be A Smaller, 7-Inch Version, Steve Jobs Suggests

Apple CEO Steve Jobs made a surprise appearance during the company's earnings call Monday afternoon and shared his (blunt) take on Apple's competitors, as well as his view of the future of the iPad.

What will Apple's "iPad 2" look like? Despite rumors from outlets like Digitimes that Apple is at work on a 7-inch version of the iPad, Steve Jobs suggested users shouldn't hold their breath for a smaller iPad.

"The reason we [won't] make a 7-inch tablet isn't because we don't want to hit that price point, it's because we think the screen is too small to express the software," Jobs said, according to Apple Insider, adding, "As a software driven company we think about the software strategies first."

Jobs said he believes the "current crop of seven-inch tablets are going to be DOA, Dead on Arrival."

Why? According to Jobs, the tablets are "too small":

This size isn't sufficient to create great tablet apps in our opinion. Well, one could increase the resolution of the display to make up for some of the difference. It is meaningless, unless your tablet also includes sandpaper, so that the user can sand down their fingers to around one quarter of the present size. Apple's done extensive user-testing on touch interfaces over many years, and we really understand this stuff. There are clear limits of how close you can physically place elements on a touch screen before users cannot reliably tap, flick or pinch them. This is one of the key reasons we think the 10-inch screen size is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps.

Jobs also gave no hints that Apple was reconsidering its ban on Flash. An analyst asked Jobs where there were "any updates to your stance on Flash," to which Jobs replied, "Flash memory; we love Flash memory." Jobs added later, "Flash hasn't presented any problem at all. As you know, most of the video on the web is now available in HTML 5."

Although Jobs handily dismissed the smaller tablets during the earnings call, he's also been known to be misleading about products that Apple has in development. He said at the All Things Digital conference in June that Apple had no plans to develop a TV interface--then launched the revamped Apple TV just four months later. As CNET points out, in 2003 Jobs dismissed tablets at the All Things Digital conference, saying, "There are no plans to make a tablet [...] It turns out people want keyboards.... We look at the tablet, and we think it is going to fail." Several years later, witness the iPad.

What features do you hope the next generation iPad will have? Weigh in below.

Most people I've seen with an iPad have it in some kind of protective cover that hinges and allows them to view it hands free, which basically turns back into a laptop, with less features......

I'm not an "Apple vs. PC" guy. Use what you will, it's a free country.

But, I haven't seen the iPad become as ubiquitous as the iPhone. Most of the time when seeing one, it's being used to kill time in a Dr's. office or long line somewhere. This is not to say it sucks, merely an observation that it seems to be a real niche product who's niche isn't quite there yet.
A friend let me borrow his for 2 weeks. Yes, it is very cool but it became the 5th wheel. If it was a phone, I would have kept it on me and left my tiny screened phone at home. By the end of the 2 weeks I was using it mostly at home as a web browser while my wife was on the desktop.

I'm spoiled by my iPhone 4. I want the Retina Display in iPad 2.

it will obviously have a front facing camera (perhaps a small VGA on the back too, not for photography but for facetime. I'd guarantee it has a gyroscope too.

As an avid reader, I've been wanting a tablet for some time, and the iPad looks better than the others. However, I refuse to read for long periods of time on something that is back-lit. When Apple announces an iPad with a Pixel Qi screen, I'll be first in line.

I think IPAD 2 could not be bigger or smaller, because the apps in it should be compatible with IPAD 1.

I prefer getting a 9.7... More laptop-like in a very portable thing. Why would anyone want a smaller one?If you want smaller, get a iPod Touch.

It already does that, I make and receive calls and texts on my iPad. There are apps, free ones, like Whistle and different Google Voice ones that give you a dedicated local phone number; make and receive unlimited calls/texts free, only limit is wifi only for now but being that you're talking about home/coffee house use it's perfect. That iPad does so many things via apps that people have no idea, unless you have one then maybe you would know.

Having just spent $700+ for my iPad, I'm not currently in the market for a 2.0 version. However, 5-10 years down the road when I might be in the market for the 4.0 or 5.0 version, I wouldn't mind seeing -- apart from the usual USB port, camera, etc. -- a microSD slot, a larger internal drive (128 GB *minimum* please!!!), two-way file transfer capability and optional CD-ROM/DVD-ROM/BluRay-ROM-reader/writer/player connectivity (Apple -- or even a third party manufacturer -- could probably make a *TON* of money if they made an iPad-connectable reader/writer/player and the associated software!)

You aren't whom Apple is marketing this device for. That's ok though, because either am I.
Apple typically markets it's devices for their true 'fans', the ones that can't live without another Apple device, or the latest and greatest device from them. The rest of the world, Apple really doesn't care about.

Give me a break.

If you're not interested in an iPad it doesn't mean that it is only designed for fanboys and people who don't know any better. It is what it is. A wonderfully designed media consumption device.

View movies, pictures, videos, web browser, e-mail and anything the apps can do.

I can't remember the last time I used my home desktop for anything an iPad can't do except play a specific video game. If there is something I need I still have my desktop. Having used an iPad I can say it is awesome and I can't wait to get my hands on the second generation one.

I don't think you're going to see any additional slots. Apple tires to make their devices as smooth as silk. An extra port will just mess it all up. Internal drives are drying up. Even with the march towards larger flash drives, the cloud is where the action will be. You'll be looking at TB's in the sky. With the MacBook Air leaving off its optical drive, the feeling is any type of plastic is an endangered species. I figure by version 4 or 5 the NYT will be paying you to buy one.

As an artist in the animation and film business doing story boards I want to be able to draw on the iPad. I want to be able to use Storyboard Pro and Photoshop to do work on the fly or on set. Without that the iPad is utterly useless to me (it's a glorified portable t.v. at the moment) and forces me to do something I hate doing which is to consider an HP tm2t tablet as my next computer purchase.

Lobby Adobe et al to produce more multi-touch compatible apps. Even if Apple produced a full multi-touch compatible tablet running OS X, it would take Adobe years to produce a version of Photoshop that would work with it.
02:35 AM on 10/21/2010
How is that? I use Photoshop and Story Board Pro on a 21 inch Cintique. Fully touch compatible as far as I can tell...

Are you referring to a different working process?

It's called Brushes, and you can draw anything in any style for any story board.

The problem is the iPad has no pressure sensitivity and no photoshop or Story board Pro. I'm sure it will happen eventually, but for now I need a lot more.

Who in the world wants it to be smaller??? I want it to be bigger! THis is the future. The iPad will get bigger until it's the size of an iMac.

but then if it gets that big wouldn't you want the full functionality and power of regular Mac to run programs like Photoshop/animation and such or do you think those will eventually port over to an iPad. also at some point doest the size make it too unwieldy to be truly portable?

Of course. The iPad will get all those features. I tell you, this is the future. 5 years ago, I told everyone that there would be a day when TVs where only an inch thin. People were laughing because they couldn't imagine how to put off the hardware in such a flat thing. Now 1 inch TVsbecome the standard.

The iPad was build to close the gap between PC and phone. But Apple will inevitably move in one of the two directions. Now since Jobs said that there are no plans for smaller screens, I'm convinced that he has 19inch pads in mind that will replace the PC.

Well, I was hoping for a 7 inch tablet. It would be easier to type on, significantly lighter, making it a better e-reader type tablet. Oh well, im a poor college student, it isn't like I was seriously in the market anyways.
