Hotel Chelsea, Legendary NYC Hotel, Is For Sale (PHOTOS)

NEW YORK — New York City's legendary Hotel Chelsea is for sale.

The 1883 building has offered short and long-term shelter for some of the world's most celebrated artists including Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, Arthur Miller and Eugene O'Neil.

It's also where The Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death in 1978.

The building, with its signature wrought iron balconies, was declared a landmark in 1966 and a city cultural preservation site and historic building of note.

It was the city's first cooperative apartment complex when it was built.

The building's board announced its intent to sell it on Tuesday. The board says it hopes "a new owner would re-energize and revitalize the Chelsea."

It's been owned and operated for more than 65 years by the same controlling families.

Get ready, New Yorkers and Artist from all over. Mayor Bloomberg will find a way to either bulldoze or make the building unrecognizable. This man has NO sense of nostalgia and could care less about what defines New York City other than glam and glitz topped with CASH!

Remember CBGB's? That's about all you can do is remember.

I have a bad feeling about this, Totto. Doomberg is a very slithery creature. He is going to find a way to destroy what he probably can only vision as ANOTHER glassy, uninspired luxury condo.

It would be difficult to save Grand Central in these times. F&F!

Im going to buy this hotel, knock it down and create a nature preserve where I will hunt the most dangerous game: man.

Whoever buys it better not change a thing. Do not disturb the spirits that dwell there. So happy I stayed there when you can actually bump into Burroughs in the lobby in the flesh.

It's all in the book.......Immaculate Fetish.

Beautiful place, but the "guts" need to be redone... Artwork doesn't fix the plumbing nor the wiring.

How the hell do you sell a place like this? It was bad enough when they sold the Algonquin, and modernized the San Remo apartment house lobby, now it's the Chelsea. Why are these people squeezing the life out of New York? Who needs another sterile American city filled with tall glass boxes? Do we value nothing of our past? I just hope Donald (YOU'RE FIRED!) Trump doesn't buy it and "revitalize" it (while he pockets a nice little tax abatement).

Agreed! It appears that some folks want to turn NYC into another Chicago (north side), LA, Houston, etc.

Look, NY has its hairy mitts on Chicago (Macy's replacing the elegant Field's, Trump's poorly positioned tower, etc.) New York City was so magnificent in the '50s and '60s before everything became homogenized and corporatized! F&F!
