Kirsten Gillibrand Profiled In Stylish Vogue Article (PHOTOS)

Kirsten Gillibrand is on the campaign trail looking to retain the Senate seat she was appointed to in 2009. After Vogue's recent glowing article, Gillibrand will undoubtedly at least have the vote of New York's politico-fashionistas.

The article, which describes Gillibrand as "a petite woman with pale-blue eyes and perfectly coiffed blonde hair" who is "essentially folksy and earnest" and "radiates kindness" is also accompanied by a stylish slideshow of the Senator.

Given Vogue's bent, the piece highlights Gillibrand's singular fashion sensibility in a field not known to be stylish. The writer spends Fashion's Night Out with the Gillibrand:

I arrive before Gillibrand, and when she walks in I notice that she has changed into a different little black dress--a Nanette Lepore--and a different pair of heels. "We had the fitting for her on Saturday," says Jennifer Pinto, who does PR and marketing for Lepore. "I've done a lot of fittings but never with a senator. You know, skirt length, heel height, cleavage. Let's just say there are different . . . rules. Such a time warp in Washington."

She also talked about her weight loss, saying she shed 40 pounds total after her second pregnancy:

"I am going to recommend this to your readers," she says, laughing. "I had saved all my 4s and 6s from before I had children, but when I started this diet I said, 'I'm going to give away all my clothes because I want to start fresh' and I wanted to reward myself; if I ever get back to that size, I can buy new clothes. I gave away every stitch of clothing that I was not wearing. I started at a size 16, and now I am back at a 4/6."

The piece delves into Gillibrand's 'voice' ("a girly voice that reminds me of Renée Zellweger's," writes Jonathan Van Meter) and why more women don't enter politics. "Very few women want to be in a profession where you will have an opponent who says mean things about you every day," she says. "It's such an adversarial profession."

A great reason not to vote for her. Tired of those careerists who will say and do anything while clearly living the high life that most people in NY cannot now afford. So she is a "girly voiced" Senator who would vote for war with Iran and says nothing that will offend my tribe. I hate being pandered to and I do not trust her an inch. Careerist "Liberals" former Blue Dogs are not real Democrats.
Really tone deaf puff piece, that she thinks in these times when the unemployed are left without a check because of the Senate; that we want to see how fabulous she looks in frocks that no one else can afford to buy.

Or do people only vote for the most expensively dressed Senator? So she lost 40 pounds? better a fat and badly dressed Senator with ethics and morals than a corrupt defender of Wall Street. Yes she attacks them in public like Schumer but in private, like Schumer, she makes sure they are well rewarded for their "support" of her.

She looks just like a Princess...just what our Republic needs.

I think you should quit your kvetching and go ahead and vote for Joe DioGuardi. You know, the guy who's anti-choice, who would privatize Social Security, and who has promised to shut down the government if elected. As for his previous election fraud and tax cheat issues, who cares about that stuff, right?

As for Gillibrand "living the high life," when does she get the chance, what with raising two small children, visiting her constituents, and becoming an expert on the issues? In case you think she either already owns, or else gets to keep the expensive clothing used in that photo shoot, she doesn't. And I think you had better explain how Gillibrand has "secretly rewarded" or even "coppuptly defended"Wall Street before you type any further such tripe.

Finally, who the heck are you to say who's a "real Democrat" and who is not, when you perpetually whine about how youur own country is better than ours?

What's the use of the article to say you lost weight and don't show the before pictures?

She was pregnant and lost the weight after having the baby. Do you really need to see a picture of her pregnant?

You can put lipstick on an airhead, but she's still an embarrassment to a once great state like NY.

You can't do much of anything or get any attention, so you fling meaningless words about. You are transparently path etic.

Pathetic and sexist. Gillibrand has proved to be a great liberal senator. How do you find her an embarrassment?
10:18 PM on 10/24/2010
"Gillibrand has proved to be a great liberal senator."

Let's not get carried away. She hasn't proven a thing, no where near 'great' and only provisional 'liberal'. It's unfortunate that the choice is between her and DioGuardi, and there isn't a true rational choice for the left-leaning.

Wish she would change her pro gun stance. I'd also like to know her view on a woman's right to choose.

From Gillibrand's website:

"Kirsten Gillibrand is committed to always protecting a woman's right to choose. During her time in Congress, she has become a national leader working to protect reproductive rights and provide women and girls with full access to reproductive health care. Kirsten knows that a woman's medical decisions should be between her, her family and her doctor, not Washington politicians.

Kirsten Gillibrand's advocacy on the part of women's reproductive rights has earned her 100% ratings from the National Organization for Women, Planned Parenthood and NARAL: Pro-Choice America as well as the early and enthusiastic endorsements of Planned Parenthood, NARAL and EMILYs List."

Thanks Miss Rose -- it's hard to follow every single candidate in other states, but I'm glad to know she an advocate for women's right to choose. Now, as I said before, it would be nice if she would change her pro-gun stance. Have a good day.

Gillibrand has been rated "F" by the NRA, and has the endorsement of the Brady Campaign. Is that anti-gun enough for you?

A few years ago when she was a Rep she was A or 100% NRA rating. now she has to get our votes in NYC she is against guns, except for Senators.
I would not mind if supporters of hers admitted she had once been much beloved of the NRA but changed her mind. I'd also be more sympathetic if you guys realized history is not just yesterday and she was once against the repeal of DADT but is now for repeal. Is she lambasting Obama for dithering on DADT repeal?

She's the one who claimed to keep a shotgun under her bed. How short is everyone's memory?

As a designer working in DC with private clients for 20 years, I have found that DC women that develop their personal style instead of trying to fit the latest fashion whims are the most successful at wearing clothes instead of clothes wearing them. Classic works best because this is for the history books--but classic doesn't = boring. Establishing a relationship with a good dressmaker or tailor is critical. But the most stylish thing that a women in a high-profile position can wear is confidence and the rest will follow. Gillibrand hits all the style marks and makes it look easy and fabulous!
