Beautiful movie houses are, unfortunately, a thing of the past.

The idea of sitting amongst such history, where silent and black and white films have been played, is truly amazing.

The Loews is a wonder theatre:
The Loew's Wonder Theatres were the five flagship movie palaces of the Loew's Theatres chain in New York City. These five lavishly designed theaters were built by Loew's to establish its preeminence in film exhibition in the metropolitan New York City area. All five theaters are still standing.[1] http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/L oew's_Wonder_Theatres

Also Check out the Stanely accross the street:
The Stanley Theater is a theater venue near Journal Square in Jersey City, New Jersey. It was designed by architect Fred Wentworth. When it opened, its 4,300 seats earned it the rank of the second largest theater on the East Coast, behind only New York City 's Radio City Music Hall.

The Keith-Albee Theatre downtown Huntington, WV opened May 7, 1928. Brothers A. B. & S. J. Hyman built the Keith. Constructed under the supervision of vaudeville tycoons B. F. Keith & Edward Albee, becoming a part of their Keith-Albee circuit, premier vaudeville tour on the East Coast of the U.S. Designed by Scottish-born Thomas Lamb, the foremost American theater & cinema architect in the late 19th & early 20th Centuries and dubbed a “temple of amusement” by Huntington’s Herald-Dispatch newspaper. “The premiere evening performance [would] be a truly gala event in the theatrical annals of Huntington.” Opening day performance featured performer Rae Samuels, nicknamed the “Blue Streak of Vaudeville” for her versatile acting ability. At the time it was built the Keith-Albee Theatre was the second biggest theater in the US, after the Roxy Theater in New York City. Seating approximately 3,000 patrons, exemplified the opulence-grandeur of the 1920’s with a Mexican Baroque design style. Intricate woodworking, chandeliers, balconies create an atmosphere of sophistication, with cosmetic smoking rooms, fireplaces for men and women in the restrooms adjoining the main lobby.
Equipped with a Wurlitzer organ to accompany live performances, motion pictures. The organ capable of creating almost any sound effect needed for silent films shown in the theater. It was removed and sold in the 1950’s after live music had lost some of its appeal. However, as a result of significant effort by Huntington native Robert Edmunds a 1927 Wurlitzer organ was reinstalled in the Keith-Albee.

I haven't seen the 10 on this list, but the Oriental in Milwaukee is amazing and deserves mention.

When I first moved to Denver in 1979 there was a theatre, The Aladdin, that was a replica of the Taj Mahal. The dome was festooned with thousands of tiny white lights and it was breathtaking at night. It closed shortly after my arrival here and was demolished despite citizen protests and before the formation of the Historical Society to make way for a Walgreens. We still have 2 Independent movie houses The Esquire that is a deco dream and The Mayan, whose exterior and interior relfect the splendor of that ancient civilization. Thanks to the Historical Society they are protected now.

This would have been a better list if it had been more representative of the entire country. Here are two more theaters worth a mention:

The Temple Theater in Meridian, MS was built during the 1920's and contains a Robert Morton Theater Pipe Organ. It has hosted everything from silent films to modern movies, live performances to beauty pageants and is an absolutely gorgeous venue.

The Historic Park Theatre in Estes Park, CO. Built in 1913, it is one of the oldest movie theatres in the United States and is still in operation.

Not sure why they thought the County Theater was any more notable than the Allen in Annville, or the Strand in Hamburg, which predates them both...
