Ahh, Tom Tancredo. With a personality straight out of a David Mamet play and a healthy dislike for anything remotely Hispanic, the Tanc has long been one of the larger anger-grizzlies to stalk the political landscape. And for his latest trick, Tancredo has mounted what amounts to a spite-campaign for the Colorado statehouse, running on the platform that the Colorado GOP and its chosen contenders are terrible and should shut up and listen to him, or else.
The "or else" in this case pretty much means handing the governor's race to Democratic nominee and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, who in the most recent Nate Silver math-geek model was accorded a 96.8% chance of winning. But Tancredo has had his success: he's currently running second in the three-way race, pushing the GOP's own nominee, Dan Maes, to the fringes. Maes, who's running short on money and options, is best known for making crazy exaggerations about his life in law enforcement and making the claim that Denver's bike-sharing program is a secret United Nations plot to undermine America.
Of course, this is but a soupcon of the bonkersauce, compared to the tureen of same that Tancredo has amassed in his political lifetime. But as we stroll back down memory lane, one thing that we can fairly say about the Tanc, is that he has at least projected his rage and insanity with a level of competence that his sad-sack GOP opponent simply cannot match.
