Adriana Lima Responds To Gisele's Breastfeeding Beliefs (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   Samira Nanda First Posted: 10/20/2010 5:46 pm Updated: 05/25/2011 6:05 pm

Victoria's Secret supermodel and new mom Adriana Lima offered her take on Gisele's controversial breastfeeding comments with The Huffington Post while promoting the $2 million diamond-encrusted Fantasy bra on Wednesday.

Back in August, Gisele told Harper's Bazaar UK "Some people here [in the U.S.] think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think 'Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?...I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months." She added, "I think breastfeeding really helped [me keep me figure]."

HuffPost's Samira Nanda caught up with Lima at the Victoria's Secret flagship store in Soho, where she revealed "I did breastfeed, but for me it did not make me lose weight. Every woman is different....so just stick with your beliefs and as long as you try your best, that's what matters."

This headline is misleading and deceptive. This was in no way a response to Gisele. Perhaps, there is something else that the post doesn't mention. It seems that Lima was only giving her view on breastfeeding and not responding to anyone, certainly not Gisele.

Yeah, its that sort of headline that is going to kill the Huffington Post. Stirring up drama.

I find headlines the weak spot in many articles, often not representing the content or most important point.

Actually it IS for both mom and baby. A very sound nutritional plan.

I nursed both of my children for a year. The youngest who was a preemie for 18 months at her pediatricians' suggestion. I did lose weight and I felt good knowing that I was providing the best food possible for my babies. But I also know that it is impossible for some women to nurse, my sister tried and was unable to produce the milk her sons needed. For some people it's not as easy as it being a choice and we should remember that. My sister would have loved to have nursed her children too.

I said this to a person below and I will say it again, I was born heroin addicted and left there for months afterwards due to how ill I was when I was born. I have perfect teeth (no help from metal) didn't get my first cavity until I was 29 and in the wisdom tooth at that. I have never ever been hospitalized, I have no food allergies or any allergies for that matter. I learned to read in one summer at the age of 5 and from there on I continued to excel in my education. I am a University graduate and an all around ok citizen. So yeah, your child will be ok if you do not breast feed them. Look at me for crying out loud!

Your story is miraculous. And as you're undoubtably aware, breast feeding is not only about the nutritional value of mother's milk, but also about the bonding of mother and child. Optimally, it's preferable to go 'natural'.

I hope your mother found recovery. Your accomplishments are a testament to innate ability, human endurance, resilience and creativity - your excellent health a blessing!

You're like the 90 year old chain smoker who says, "I've been smoking my entire life and I'm not dead. I don't know why people think smoking is such a big deal." If you've managed to overcome potentially damaging events, please don't wish those damaging events on other people! Please be logical.

I took that comment differently -in a more positive light. I thought it illustrates how one can overcome many problems if they are strong. She overcame drug addiction and abandonment as well as a lack of breastfeeding. In the big picture, none of these hardships got her down, but she acknowledges that lack of breastfeeding is an obstacle even if compared to many other things it is not as significant. Of course the ideal situation is to do the best for our babies whenever things are within our control. She just mentioned some far more significant issues that she had overcome as well (things that were also within a mothers control).Acknowledging that these issues are more significant does not negate the importance of nutrition. It just puts it more in perspective overall. I hardly think she's implying that the setbacks she overcame were no big deal.
While the 90 yr old chain smoker isn't dead he probably can't run. He certainly isn't in the same kind of shape 95 yr old Jack Lallane is in. If we have a higher standard within our reach, why not have that higher standard? If the 90 yr old chain smoker didn't smoke, he could be even stronger. Although the nurturing that this child got was obviously adequate, could it possibly get even better? I think the best is what we should aim for whenever it is easily within our reach.

Gisele was more right than wrong with her breast-feeding comments. It's simply ignorant to not even try, and those who can't should try at all costs before they rule it out. I mean, why do women think they have breasts? Why does mother nature allow women to make milk filled with all the dna, enzymes, and nutrients essential to human life? It's because thats what human babies need and are supposed to get in the beginning of their lives. Human babies need the milk of human women, not cow's (thats for baby cow's), and not artificial milk (thats for artificial people). And once a proper breast-feeding period is complete (at least a year, preferably 3) people don't really need milk/dairy products in their diet. Milk is designed for healthy growth, development of immune system, weight gain with good fats, etc. And this speaks to yet another reason why our society is so overweight, our love for dairy (enormous cow) products...which continues past the breast-feeding stage. There's no need to consume such high caloric foods after the breast-feeding stage...and if not then, after the adolescent stage, and definitely not as an adult when weight management becomes more of a problem

Well obviously you wouldn't want to suggest a mother with HIV to breast feed her children and there are many other health reasons why a woman wouldn't want to or shouldn't breast feed. But at the end of the day, it's a woman's choice. I was born in the sixties and my mother did not breast feed me. And if I recall correctly, my grandmother told me she didn't breast feed her kids.

I wouldn't suggest a woman with HIV should allow herself to get pregnant at all. Obviously it does happen and that is a good reason not to breastfeed, but at the end of the day as you say there are good choices and bad ones.

There's discernable difference between mother's *who don't* and mother's *who can't*
07:30 PM on 10/21/2010
Some women, even if they want to, cannot breast feed. The milk does not come in, the child won't latch on. Do women deliberately want to hurt their new born babies. Some are sick and advised not to breast feed. Others get pregnant and it take away from the developing embryo.
Its simplistic to say, women who don't want to breast feed are ignorant. Often those who don't breast feed have a medical reason for not doing so

You should never breast feed boys. We end up spending the rest of our lives searching for boobs as big as our head.
