Drug Lab Found In Georgetown Dorm

Dorm Room

WASHINGTON — A dormitory for freshmen at prestigious Georgetown University was evacuated after a suspected meth lab was found in a room.

Washington fire and emergency services spokesman Pete Piringer said the department's hazardous materials team responded to Harbin Hall around 6:15 a.m. Saturday.

The dorm was evacuated, but seven people were exposed to noxious chemicals, including three students. No one was transported to the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are questioning possible suspects and believe some students were involved.

Georgetown spokesman Jordan Gray says about 400 students remained evacuated late Saturday morning while federal agents investigated. Students were sent to various campus buildings.

Students at Georgetown are very creative, making drugs on campus and selling them to others. Lock em up

One would likely require a skill level greater than that of a first year chemistry student to successfully perform a synthesis of 5-meo-dmt or dmt, which means it is likely these boys were preforming an extraction using mimosa hostils and a solvent such as alcohol. Yeah, that is correct, there is your "Drug Lab". An accurate analogy to put this extraction in perspective is using a lipid to extract cannanaboids from marijuana = marijuana butter. I do not think that facilitating such innocuous chemical reactions could be accurately described by the term drug lab. We can see how connotations spin perceptions in many of the posts below. Many people who have posted saw those words and assumed Meth lab.

The truth is DMT when present in it's natural container, ie, the human pineal gland, several species of plant and animal, it is not illegal to possess in the United States. Some jurisdictions consider it's use as a spiritual catalyst/sacrament a low enforcement priority. In many cultures it is used in a spiritual setting and I must say I admire those cultures for their ability to integrate in a minimally intrusive`manner with their ecosystems. We here in the first world could learn a lot from them.

The element of danger in this situation has been greatly exaggerated. This thread is a great example of the effectiveness of fear and propaganda.

Later reports confirm the student(s) were "manufacturing" DMT not methamphetamine which I do not endorse in any way.

Your assessment is sound though you completely missed the fact that the article states "Meth Lab". Inaccuracy is only implied after the fact. You read the article and assumed DMT. Based on the information above that is an incorrect assumption. Funny really.

As the parent of a high school honor student I find two things very appalling about what I have just read.
1. That this sort of thing can actually happen on a college campus!
2. That the majority of posted comments look upon this as humorous!
So for you comedians out there:
Somewhere down the road you will be expected to have a positive influence on society.
Do us all a favor. Take a look at the serious side of the story!

Yeah, and this is going to be your kid from what i can gather. Studies have shown that more than 40% of teenagers who's parents are very strict on them throughout high school end up being drug addicts or felons. Live a little and be happy that your kid isn't that dumb.

I'm just curious if this was a Business major (In which case the mishap is funny) or a Chemistry major...in which case they should probably be assigned a remedial course.

All jokes set aside though; considering the current employment outlook and job availability for college students - most of whom are staring at gargantuan debt upon graduation; can you really blame the kid?

Parallel education. Just in case if degree fails.

Is anyone going to make a comment about "higher" education?

I love this article so, so much. I am a 22-yr old college student, and am so excited to show my super conservative parents. This is truly education at work. I am in no way promoting or denying Methamphetamine's and/or its derivatives. However, what I am most amused by are the adverse reactions to this article, the super-expensive school involved, and the fact that most identify Meth-labs with low-intellect 3rd world Americans. The joke is on you. Adderall for instance is a less concentrated form of Crystal Methamphetamines depending on dose, and is . Food for thought. That being said, I must tap into my updated 22-year old side, and compliment the ball size of whomever attempted to pull this off.

"possible suspects"? you mean the guys who lived in the room?

I have the feeling that said "Meth lab/ Dorm" didn't look like the one in the picture.... then again maybe it did, why can't a student cooking meth be organized too?

You all need to leave these kids alone. They are busy with their homework.
