Will Republicans Take Control Of Congress In Midterm Elections? Michael Steele, Tim Kaine Debate GOP 'Wave'

Gop Wave Election

DOUGLASS K. DANIEL   10/24/10 02:20 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — The Republican Party chief on Sunday forecast a wave of anti-Democratic voting on Election Day while his Democratic counterpart said a strong get-out-the-vote effort would hold back losses and help keep Congress out of GOP hands.

Nine days before elections that will decide whether President Barack Obama will face a Republican Congress, party chairman Michael Steele said he has seen a groundswell and energy behind GOP candidates as he has traveled around the country.

"I think you are going to see a wave, an unprecedented wave on Election Day that is going to surprise a lot of people," Steele said.

Steele said he believes "absolutely" that Republicans will gain the seats needed to become the majority party in the House and thus oust Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. He was less certain that Republicans will take over the Senate.

Tim Kaine, the Democratic National Committee chairman, expressed confidence that Democrats would retain power in both chambers. He argued that early voting and turnout at rallies for Democratic candidates are evidence that the party's "ground game" will prevent the disaster some are predicting for the party.

"From this point forward it's all about turnout and ground game," Kaine said. "We've got work to do, but we think we can do it."

In a mid-October survey of people likely to vote, an Associated Press-GfK poll found all signs pointing to a huge Republican victory on Nov. 2. In the survey, 50 percent said they will back the GOP candidate in their House district while 43 percent say they will support the Democrat. The GOP edge slightly narrowed in recent weeks as Democrats grew more energized.

Republicans need a 40-seat gain to take over the House. By some estimates at least 75 House seats may change hands, and most of those are held by Democrats. An additional two dozen other races for Democratic-controlled seats have tightened in recent weeks.

Republican political adviser Karl Rove predicted GOP gains in the upper 50s to low 60s in the House, well over the number needed for a GOP majority. Polls show intensity among voters on the side of those favoring the GOP, he said.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., the chairman of the Democrats' House campaign committee, said he believes the House will remain in Democratic control, saying that early voting was showing good news for the party.

In the Senate, Democrats are seen as having a better chance of holding their majority even though 37 seats are up for election. Democrats currently have 57 seats, plus the backing of two independents, but they are expected to lose some seats to Republicans.

Steele said Republicans hope for a better relationship between Obama and a GOP-controlled Congress than they have seen with Democrats in the majority in the House and the Senate. Kaine said some economic issues might draw bipartisan support once the election is behind the two parties.

Steele appeared Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" while Kaine spoke on ABC's "This Week." Rove and Van Hollen appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Just my 2 cents, but I don't think the Republicans have their ground work being done.
They have some crazy tea bag partiers out insulting everyone. But that old get out the vote gang that worked for Bush is . . . vanished.
The billionaires own all the news, so we won't know anything untill Nov. 2.
We can wait.

I was a boilermaker union steward, and I had to defend the workers from being cheated out of overtime pay, everytime the contract expired the bosses would try to make us take a pay cut, even though the company was making good money, and the bosses were getting pay raises, when I was young and just got out of the military I went and worked on the oil rigs in the North Sea, Norwegian oil is nationalized, they have a really good health care, and education system, and make sure that the rich pay high taxes to help pay for it, and they have strong unions, which is why they have such a high standard of living. The Big Oil billionaire Koch brothers do a really good job of brainwashing people to be anti-union, and to think that tax cuts for the rich benefit them, don't be fooled.

Wave?

Real experts at analyzing poll data, like Nate Silver, warn repeatedly that the raw poll data this year is NOT very telling by itself, given the larger than average number of competitive races, thus the range of possible outcomes is very wide.

Quoting:

"Sometimes, however, a thorough and objective analysis of the data leads one to the opposite conclusion: that the competition is too sure of itself. Our model figures there is a very wide range of potential outcomes because that is the only responsible forecast. We’re not being meek or wishy-wishy: instead, we are firmly, boldly, affirmatively and happily embracing the uncertainty. This is not because of any intrinsic property of our forecasting model; rather, it is because of the particular set of circumstances on the ground this year. If anything, I worry that our model implies too little uncertainty."

Many Independents and even many Republicans have...not...made up their minds as to how they will vote. They will decide in these final days. Many are Fox watchers and talk radio listeners. They may not know what the Republicans real agenda is. Tell them. Tell them the Republicans want to privatize Social Security funds and gamble seniors SS funds on the Stock Market. Tell them that the GOP wants to privatize Medicare and give seniors a "voucher" for their medical care. The GOP wants to send seniors out on the private market to purchase private insurance which will cost seniors over 30% more than Medicare. Private Health insurers have a 28% administrative cost, on average, plus takes profit for medical care. Medicare has a 3% administrative overhead and does not take profit for seniors' medical care. The Republican party also wants to privatize Veterans medical benefits which would result in higher medical costs for America's veterans. Tell them that The Republicans want to get rid of unemployment benefits and the minimum wage. Tell them...it may be the only opportunity for some of the undecided folks to understand what the actual Republican plan for America is.”

Michele Bachmann wants to have a means test for Social Security recipients, so that only the destitute receive it, and if she and her cohorts get their way, there will be a lot more destitute people, war overseas is bad enough, the Republicans want to wage war on Americans.

In hindsight you are bound to have lots of people being disappointed with Obama. This is because realistically Obama is a more of a central left type of guy and a definite consensus seeker than what the left and the right pundits made him out to be.

By trying to make more people happy, Obama ended up making alot less people happy.

Apparently a lot of people don’t like the way pbama is driving and want to take away the keys. Independents loved obama when they thought they could just park him in the driveway and show off for the neighbors. But actually driving the damn thing, well that just sux.

Look, a lot of these independents made the bad decision to vote for obama to prove to all their friends and neighbors that they were not racist. Now, they have to try to prove they are not stuck on stoopid. They could have avoided the entire tissue by not being boneheads two years ago.
