Underwater Sculpture Acting As Artificial Coral Reef (VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/26/10 01:30 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:05 PM ET

British artist and avid diver Jason DeCaires Taylor is unwilling to accept the prediction that 80% of coral reefs will be lost by 2050. His latest project in the ocean near Cancun, La Evolución Silenciosa ("The Silent Evolution"), is a series of over 400 underwater sculptures of human figures which are based off of photographs of real people. Taylor views the statues as a metaphor for the evolution of human life, but they also exist as part of actual marine life, operating as an artificial reef. The installation will be inaugurated on November 27, 2010 to coincide with the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico.

I am so unbelievably filled with hope and joy and awe over this. What a brilliant idea. As an ecologist, I am tremendously inspired by others doing their part for the natural world. And he's making such a cool contribution to the art world. I feel like I could just keep gushing, but I'll stop now and just say WOW.

Immensely powerful work. Transcends into that godless worship of Nature which gives strength to those who will save the life of the planet from ourselves.

This is fantastic... Underwater sculpture - what a great idea, perfectly performed too. The most amazing things are built today on the juxtaposition between two different worlds... thus new art is created. Another example maybe similar to this "underwater world" installation is a "digital architecture"... As an architect I was amazed for instance by the piece colled Pixel City... true architecture done by some high-tech geek... http://bit.ly/azR1u5
