Color Nook eReader Unveiled By Barnes & Noble (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 10/26/10 06:56 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:10 PM ET

(By MAE ANDERSON and SARAH SKIDMORE, AP/HUFFINGTON POST) NEW YORK -- Barnes & Noble Inc. is introducing a new Nook e-reader with a color touch screen for $249 as competition among e-reader makers heats up ahead of the holidays.

The Nookcolor can be used for reading digital books, magazines, newspapers and children's books. It ups the competition for e-readers by including functions common to more expensive tablet computers such as Apple's iPad with features such as games, music, Web browsing and its own application store. It runs on Google Inc.'s Android operating system.

Barnes & Noble, which announced the product Tuesday, said it will begin taking orders at its stores on Wednesday and begin shipping in mid-November.

E-readers are expected to be popular holiday gifts. Competition has exploded over the past year with new models and price cuts for Amazon.com's Kindle and offerings from Kobo, Sony and others all competing against tablet computers such as the iPad.

When Barnes & Noble introduced its Nook e-reader last year, its primary competition was Amazon.com's dominant Kindle, which retails for $139-189. The Nookcolor is $50 more than the most expensive Nook currently on the market.

There are now many e-readers available from Sony, Kobo and others, in addition to the popular iPad. E-readers are expected to be popular gifts this holiday season, so makers are amping up competition.

The current Nook offers color on the bottom half of its dual screen display, but not in the screen where the book is displayed. No other e-readers available on the U.S. market currently offer color displays.

Barnes & Noble also plans to launch a digital collection of more than 12,000 kids books, including picture books, for the Nook.

The low price is enticing because it undercuts the iPad's $499 starting price so much, said Simba Information's Michael Norris.

"What they want to avoid doing is creating product that will make consumers think, 'I'll just spend 'X' much more and get an iPad," he said.

E-reader makers have amped up competition with price cuts and other deals.

On Monday Borders, which offers several e-readers online and in stores, launched some limited offers through Sunday. Shoppers can save $30 on some of its readers and get free shipping with online orders of the devices. It is also offering a $25 gift card with a Velocity Micro Cruz tablet purchase, free eBooks with a Kobo preorder and 20 percent off eReader accessories.

Also last week, Amazon said it would offer a lending capability for e-books starting later this year, similar to the service that Barnes & Noble's Nook offers. Amazon has been expanding distribution for the Kindle, which is now available at Best Buy and Target and Walmart along with Amazon.com. The Nook is also available at Best Buy and Walmart, along with Barnes & Noble stores.

The electronic book sector is small but rapidly expanding, and traditional booksellers like Barnes & Noble and Borders are pinning their future success on the sector. Research firm The Yankee Group has forecast 6 million e-book readers will be sold in 2010, and expects the market to grow to $2.5 billion by 2013.

Shares of Barnes & Noble fell 19 cents to close at $14.98 but were unchanged in after-hours trading Tuesday.

It irritates me when people bother to mention the ipad in articles about ereaders. An ipad is a tblet comuter... an ereader is an EREADER. The aren't the smae thing.

Anyone able to comment on the Sony 950, and how it compares to the Nook or Kindle? Having a hard time deciding.

As a Kindle owner, I confess to my bias, but here is my opinion: I didn't care for ther Sony reader's controls. This may have been corrected by the company, but I didn't like the way it worked.

Thanks, Gunfighter. As an aside, I read some of your comments on these boards, and am curious as to why you choose "Gunfighter" as your name.

The Amazon Kindle is still the best ebook reader out there though. Way more titles available and better operating system.

Great, a non E-ink reader that doubles as a substandard tablet.

If you just want a reader, get a kindle or something with E-ink, much easier on the eyes for long periods.

If you want a tablet, get a real tablet like either the iPad or, even better, one of its coming competitors like Playbook or Galaxy Tab.

Neither are real competitors. Closest thing on the horizon is probably notionink's adam.

Sure they are, and you have given no reason otherwise. Galaxy Tab sports more memory, the same speed of processor, support for flash and other formats not supported by iPad, front and rear cameras, higher pixel density, runs on an OS that is already very popular, and is more portable.

As for the Adam, it looks great but I hope we see it soon- it's been delayed numerous times.

This is the strategy that CAN fight iPad.

well that was one of the first things i heard after showing the color nook to a friend that also has the first nook. I have it and got the email saying that this was coming soon. We both were like why spend $250 when I can just wait it out and get the Ipad for an additional $250 and do more. Its great for those that just want an ereader. I love the idea of it but I won't be buying another nook but its great for first time buyers.

The Nook app is available for Android.
You can get a 7" Android Color Tablet with WiFi for $127.60:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.47009

Seems like that would give you about a zillion times the functionality of a Nook.
Why would anyone want a Nook?

I never looked at these tablets before so I bookmarked the link you posted and I'm going to look up some reviews and if the reviews are at least a C+, for the price, I may very well try it.

Thanks for posting.

"Why would anyone want a Nook?"

Because they want to be able to carry around a lot of books at the same time? Because they are avid readers? Beccause they don't need to compute-on-the-go?

Hello, hello .. is this thing on?

It's sort of ugly. I have a regular black and white nook, which I like just fine. I'll save my pennies for the next generation tablet PCs rather than buying another e-reader.

I'm curious about the screen on this thing. Color is cool, but will it just be another lcd that burns my eyes (note I will be reading after hours of gaming) or is there a way you can adjust to make it more like the eInk display on the black and white ones?

more amazing than you

Most likely.

There are e-ink technologies that produce color representations, but they are not widespread. Last I read about them the refresh time was bad, though otherwise they worked well. The big drawbacks currently are refresh rate (video would be unpossible) and a lack of high resolution (images look like poo). Oh, and the cost. Color e-ink is more costly than an LCD or LED display and less suited for other uses.

Here's hoping we see Pixel Qi come successfully onto the market soon. This is a color display that can work like E-ink, without backlighting.

It looks like a real cool gadget, but isn't the whole point of an e-reader to mimic a book. I don't think I want the pictures. I want the author to paint the images with their words, this is why I asked for a Kindle for my b-day!

Wow!

Although I'm a confirmed Mac Man, I like what I see - especially the price. It's about time somebody gave Steve and Co. a little competition. It was getting too easy.

BTW: It's interesting that it took a publishing company, not Microsoft-geek-techie-ditto-heads to do it.

Um...It's an iPad. It's half the price with half the features. Save up and buy an iPad.

Why pay more if you don't need all those features?
On an iPad you can't even multi-task ...yet.

Apple is way overpriced on most of their things, if not all.
Better off waiting for other tablets to come into the market and shake things up a bit and help drop prices.

This device is nice but If i buy something to use for e-reading it will be a hybrid device, an lcd with reflective mode ie being able to turn off back-lighting like the pixel qi. . Ill stick to regular books untill then. It is rather cheap though maybe ill just buy it and install a custom rom on it and use it for surfing the net.
