German Teens Win 'Ugly Dancing' Contest (VIDEO)

Striking more than a few dubious poses, a group of four German teens called "Die Dezentiner" took home top honors at the 2010 Ugly Dance World Cup, held this past weekend in Hamburg.

Originally from the northwestern German town of Vechta, the winning troupe surpassed 9 other teams from Luxembourg and Switzerland in a less-than-glamorous dance-off with their signature move, dubbed the "Shy Dance," Reuters is reporting. Contestants were judged on "outstanding ugliness, creativity, singularity/unseen moves and fun factor," according to the event's website.

Organizers of the event, founded in 2009, defended ugly dancing as not necessarily meaning bad. "It's so easy to dance nicely, but ugly dancing is an art," they said. "We like to call it 'ugly aesthetics.'"

The story is funny from its text alone if you know how Germany (especially East Germany) was stuck in the rut called the 80s for so long (in fact is still not completely out of it), but the video here is priceless.

It's genius. Why? Because the way most people dance is robotically vacuous. The Germans are always in front of some things. The most meticulous engineering. And in counter-poise they take it out there. There was an art movement in Germany in the 70's called "Sheist Art". You can guess even if you don't know German.

To generalize super broadly - they're most always ahead in some things (like technology), and usually behind on literary and art movements, etc. East Germany was so far behind it was in front of itself (to rephrase that Paul McCartney song lyric in "The World Tonight"). The West Germans are still paying for East German repairs with that huge solidarity tax every year.
