Women's Rights Groups, Progressives Grow Disgruntled With DCCC Priorities

Health Overhaul Vulnerable
Rep. Suzanne Kosmas (D-Fla.) is one of the candidates who has not received much backing from the DCCC, say women's rights groups

WASHINGTON -- With less than a week to go before the election, women's rights groups are growing despondent about what they feel is an imbalance in the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's 2010 priorities.

On Tuesday evening, the latest and perhaps last batch of expenditures made by the DCCC's independent expenditure arm was made public. They confirm, for the skeptics, what has been a troubling trend in the committee's funding breakdown. While money was sprinkled (in large doses) across a host of races, several prominent female candidates and some noticeable progressives were not on the list.

Reps. Suzanne Kosmas (D-Fla.), Carol Shea-Porter (D-N.H.), Betsy Markey (D-Colo.), Debbie Halvorson (D-Ill.), and Kathy Dahlkemper (D-Penn.) found their re-election contests shunned. So too did Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Ohio), though earlier in the cycle the DCCC spent roughly $20,000 attacking her opponent.

"What I find of high concern is that here are women who do what women do when elected," said Siobhan "Sam" Bennett, President and CEO of Women's Campaign Forum. "They are far better on health care, education, and the extension of unemployment benefits... and what we are seeing is these women are being punished for being leaders around these critical issues... I think it is enormously shortsighted of the party to go in this direction.

"To be abandoned, or neglected, or under-invested in is not only the height of irony it is short-sighted by the party."

Looking at individual races, the DCCC's strategic choices actually seem logical. Each of these candidates trail in the polls, some by double digits (Halvorson) others by less (Kosmas and Kilroy). Female candidates in strong positions were buoyed by the committee's independent expenditure arm. Even then, the DCCC insists it has made sure no one is hung out to dry, either by aiding field programs or by only backing off once third-party groups assumed the financial load.

"The DCCC is invested in each of those members," said spokeswomen Jen Crider. "Our spending decisions are based on a variety of factors including what other Democratic-leaning outside groups are doing in the district. We are confident that each of them will win on Election Day."

In politics, however, investing money trumps exhibiting confidence. One female Democratic operative, speaking on condition of anonymity to express her frustrations more frankly, noted that various polls showed several of those candidates within striking distance. "Those women are all good soldiers, they're all running good campaigns, and those races are all winnable."

And while each of the aforementioned female candidates may have ground to make up against their challenger, so too do several male candidates who have been given healthy backing by the DCCC. Rep. Travis Childers (D-Miss.) has received more than $950,000 from the committee's independent expenditure fund despite trailing his opponent by an average of six percentage points. Rep. Chet Edwards (D-Tex.), down ten points, has received more than $620,000. Rep. Jim Marshall (D-Ga.), down six, has received roughly $40,000.

Officials who work closely with the committee say there are clear reasons to make such investments and not one of them involves gender. More often than not, it's intel from the ground suggesting that an infusion of cash could make the difference between winning or losing. But the message the money sends has resonated beyond a cadre of women-in-governance activists. Marshall has said he would vote against retaining House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should he win office. Edwards and Childers have campaigned against her. Another Pelosi-critic (though an election frontrunner) Rep. Bobby Bright (D-Ala.) has received more than $1.4 million from the DCCC.

"It's absolutely unconscionable that the DCCC is spending money on races and in places where these members of Congress, not only do not support the Speaker's agenda, but don't support the Speaker," said a Washington D.C.-based Democratic strategist and self-professed progressive. "F---ing Bobby Bright? Give me a break."

There is, of course, a glaring counterpoint to the theory that the DCCC has abandoned women at the behest of Blue Dog Democrats and Pelosi critics. While Chairman Chris Van Hollen directs committee strategy it's not done without major input from several prominent female lawmakers, including Pelosi herself.

"You are basically saying that the Speaker, the first woman Speaker of the House, is against women candidates," said a committee adviser.

Likewise, as the adviser notes, the DCCC has made major investments in the re-election efforts of prominent female candidates. Rep. Anne Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.) has received more than $1 million; Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.) has been given more than $1.3 million; Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) got a $132,000 infusion on Tuesday evening. A common feature that all these candidates share: they're much closer in the polls than the list of the abandoned.

"They very much want Bobby Bright to win," said a Democratize operative who works closely with the DCCC. "So it shows you how they are looking at it. But I don't think there is any calculation that says we want him to win at the expense of a Mary Jo Kilroy."

I care this much about (thumb and forefinger about .001" apart) women's rights groups. It is women that turned this country left after they won the right to vote in the 20's. Creeping soclialism has been driving our country into the ground ever since.

Another reason why a Progressive Third Party is needed !!!!!!!!!!!

Actually for a country this size we should have from 5 - 8 political parties for adequate representation !!!!!

Your video was of Brown 30-years ago. The plan today is to kick all the GOP out of California. California has prospered with less GOP and the Democrats in charge, Ask Meg Whitman:

Boehners opponent Justin Cosoulli and Scott McAdams are doing better than expected with
no help.from democratic committte. Look with over 250 congressional races not every one is going to be.

If it up to me the national committes would dole out the money equally,
Those that are so inclined can contribute to the candidates directly.

Remind voters the first bill President Obama with Democratic support was
the Lilly Ledbetter Act of 2009. (Equal Pay for men and women for equal work).

People get a grip. Obama is a good man but not a GOD. If you think you are dissatisfied now, wait until the Rethugs and Tea Party Members get in office if you refuse to vote.

Obama has accomplished a lot and he can accomplish more if given an opportunity to do so.

The Rethugs have made it clear from day one that their only agenda has been to defeat him and they have continually proven this by their flat out refusal to work with him.

The country could be further along had they been willing to work with him rather than against him and the middle class.

agreed- HCR ended up being an abortion debate- which is what the Republicans wanted- They us everytime- If we stuck together and didn't splinter including all the groups - Equal rights, environmental groups and women's rights group we would win more- We should have had rallies that looked like the million man march- or the Pro Choice rally a few yrs ago to counter the TP protests- We can do it - we have done it- we need to be focused and stop letting the TP Republicans play us- they are great at it-

There is a lot that Dems and the Obama administration has done for women, but there's a lot that still needs to be done. Women are really suffering from this down economy, and I think moving forward they're going to see more and more hardship while manufacturing jobs may make gains through infrastructure spending. We really need to address women's needs and concerns in this recession. I HIGHLY recommend checking out this series on women and the jobs crisis. It looks at just how they're faring and way, plus it offers practical solutions that can benefit everyone. Check it out: http://www.newdeal20.org/category/the-myth-of-the-mancession-women-the-jobs-crisis/

Is Obama, or his advisers, deliberately studying how to bring conservative solutions to liberal problems and deciding how best to limit the "extremes" to boost party power? (see "Centrism") This was also called Neo Liberalism (or Neo Conservative, until the Trotskyite disciples of Leon Strauss hijacked the term).
I don't see Progressive solutions (New Deal for example) as being extreme. Wack jobs on the right that equate anything to the left of a Moderate Republican as "Communists" are not helping here. The only winners will be the Corporatists, who want a docile market to dominate. No real Right OR Left to worry about.

I can relate to that. I can remember Eisenhower vs Stevenson (1952). I can remember Dewey/Truman also, but that is another story. And an Eisenhower Republican would be Lost in the Nixon era, and Nixon on domestic and trade had a record that would make a Progressive of today proud. Now we have to make do with Centrists and hope for an opportunity to resurrect the New Deal some day. F & Fav for the memories. : )

I urge all progressive women to stop being intimidated and come out and fight for womens rights to have safe and legal abortions,or we are clearly going to end up losing this battle.. If abortion is legal than why is it allowed to have all those idiots protesting and disrupting things at abortion clinics?. The cops should have the tight to haul these people away and put them in jail if they misbehave. It should be against the law to harrass doctors and spread info about their private lives, so some crazy fool will go and take it upon himself to shoot them! There should be more protection just like corporations have protection from protesters!

DYING EMPIRES, especially the U.S., are indeed a TRAGEDY to watch.

While the Empire is consumed by its death throes, they flail and wail until their vital systems are no more because the DISEASE -- war mongering, war profiteering and predatory capitalism -- that's killing the Empire is more painful and deadlier than any CANCER.

However, all Empire can ressurect and rebuild what's left of the ashes but the Empire can NEVER GO BACK to what it once was nor employ the same systems which destroyed it in the first place. It can only go in another direction that is more humane and embraces sanity -- EVERY DOG FOR HIMSELF, AN EYE FOR AN EYE OR MANIFEST DESTINY IS OURS FOR THE TAKING -- unless, of course, you wish to bury the empire forever.

It's our choice, but in the meantime, there is going to continue to be a whole lot of suffering from now until that time -- THE DEATH FO IMPERIALISTS AMERICA.

You seem to relish the demise of the U.S. Why do you hate your own country? (I assume you are a U.S. citizen). But the rest of us haven't given up on it. What history books have you been reading? The more the U.S. sinks from its federalist, small central government, individual responsibility, individual accountability, (truly) free market Constitutional roots --- the principles that made it the preeminent economic and military power in the world, the principles that created the highest standard of living and the greatest opportunities on earth for people from every corner of the world, the more it becomes a "dying empire."

The principles you advocate are what is strangling our country. The more they are embraced, the worse our situation will become. The facts of history are inconvrovertable confirmation: Like all ponzi schemes, socialism has eventually destroyed every country that has bitten that poisened apple.

I love how you conflate your political ideology to what you think is in the Constitution, but I never see any of you actually quoting it. You just proclaim the Constitution is for this or that without saying exactly what it says, and you ignore the stuff in the Constitution you don't like and even think certain parts should be repealed. My mom is a conservative who thinks like you, but she doesn't think any of the amendments are good. What? Over 2/3 of the states approved them, but they're not good? And what about where the Constitution says our government is formed "to promote the general welfare" of the people? How about "insure domestic tranquility"? And where does it say anything about the size of government? The Constitution was written when America had 4 million people. We now have over 300 million people. Do you really think that many people can be governed with a small government? We have a HUGE country, much bigger than it was at the time the Constitution was written, with a spread over vast areas of the planet. Alaska alone is 1/3 the size of the 48 contiguous states. How do you propose to manage all this with a small government?

BTW, what has our government actually done to you, especially since President Obama has been elected, that has interfered in your life? Please be specific. I'm very curious, yet no one can ever tell me one thing. Maybe you can?

True Progressives don't call for a loss this Tuesday and I don't imagine that Hillary would either.

At minimum, Medicare Reform and the Employee Free Choice Act are on the table; we can do PLENTY of Progressive Base Building if we don't just throw the table and everything on it out this Tuesday and start over with whatever Economic Royalists will let us have.

I think almost everyone is underestimating the importance of the CONSEQUENCES of Derivative Crash of 2008 - MOST of which remains PRIVATE information.

The Senate Democrats did not force the Republicans to filibuster anything, because FOREIGN POWER$~ are literally holding a great big GUN to the heads of the American people, what those FOREIGN financial fiefdoms do WILL cost lives and the President MUST deal with that FACT - - BEFORE ALL OTHER FACTS.

Imagine being in a position in which whatever you could do will cause harm and the greatest amount of harm will result most certainly from if you try to mug that Murderer with the gun all by yourself. In a political situation like that, what you need is as many people as you can possibly get to voluntarily risk to help you get the gun away from the Murderer.

Now add to this scenario the fact that there those in this country who would be more than happy with Civil War II against Abortion/GLBT-Civil-Rights/Nonwhite-and/or-non-Christian, check out The Constitution Restoration Act in the Senate Judiciary Committee right now, plus we will Redistrict soon!!!

I'm not making excuses. I would've LOVED a Senate filibuster in support of Single Payer Health Care, because that would have been the most effective solution to our "Health" "Care" crisis. I'm just making a pitch here for us to understand the context in which our criticisms of the Democratic Party and President Obama should be placed.
