For 30 years I thought Ball Four was the best baseball book I'd ever read, until I read The Glory of Their Times. Just beyond magnificent.

"The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron" is a new one I read and definitely recommend to all you baseball readers out there. Talks a bit about Bonds, a lot about his relationship with Mays, playing ball during the civil rights movement, etc. If you have the time, check it out.
Though I haven't seen Ken Burns "10th inning" yet, I believe the author of Last Hero is one of the commentators.

The Schwarz book is actually a fun read despite what its title says. Definitely recommended for every baseball fan.

Also, on the Negro Leagues, I strongly urge everyone to check out "Beyond the Shadow of the Senators," which is about the Homestead Grays in particular but more broadly concerns the relationship of Negro League franchises with MLB.

Looks like they stuck to non-fiction only. When it comes to baseball...a little fiction goes a long way...

Such as list is waaaaay too personal and subjective and depends upon the reader's relationship with the game. (With all due respect -- The Last Best League??) A couple of my favorites was Leonard Koppett's "The Thinking Fans Guide to Baseball" and "The Bill James Historical Abstract." I could go on and on. And that doesn't even touch on baseball fiction!

I agree with you on the James books. Fascinating and provocative stuff.

My two personal favorites not on the list would have to be "Ball Four" by Jim Bouton, and "The Wrong Stuff" by Bill Lee, both books that examined the darker AND lighter sides of baseball.

Yeah, both Ball Four and the sequel to it are pretty hilarious. Young people today would probably read them and think, "what's the big deal?" but Ball Four was uber controversial at the time and Bouton was condemned by the baseball press establishment as well as that of MLB's at the time.
