A 21-year-old man has been charged with a hate crime after allegedly assaulting a woman because he thought she was gay.
The Denver Post reports that Alexander Declouet has been charged with second-degree assault, criminal mischief and bias-motivated crime, all felonies.
According to 9 News, Declouet allegedly assaulted the victim, who is also 21, early in the morning on Aug. 22 and vandalized her car. According to police reports, this assault stemmed from an earlier argument that apparently started over Declouet's belief that the victim was a lesbian.
Colorado law defines a hate crime as injury to person or property of another because of that person's "actual or perceived race, color, religion, ancestry, or national origin."
