Dapo Mine Flood Kills 12 In China

Posted: Updated:

BEIJING — State media says a coal mine flood in southwestern China has killed 12 people, adding more casualties to the thousands killed each year in mining accidents.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported Thursday that 50 miners were working at the Dapo mine in Anshun city in Guizhou province when it flooded Wednesday morning, killing 12 miners.

Thirty-eight people, including the mine's managers, managed to escape, the report said. The cause of the flooding is still under investigation.

China's mines are the deadliest in the world, with more than 2,600 people killed in coal mine accidents in 2009 alone.
