John Raese's Golf Scorecards Point To Membership In Elite, All-White Club

John Raese Everglades Club

WASHINGTON -- Several weeks ago, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh appeared to have inadvertently harmed West Virginia Senate candidate John Raese, when he noted that the two belonged to the same country club in Palm Beach.

Running for a Senate seat in Appalachia, the Raese campaign could hardly have been thrilled that one of the most widely disseminated talk show hosts in the nation had reminded listeners of his part-time Florida residency. More than that, the club to which Limbaugh appeared to be referring was the Everglades Club in Palm Beach, an elite hangout that, as of 2008, had never let in a black member.

Membership at Everglades doesn't come without political costs. It was a major point of contention when Limbaugh was trying to purchase a stake of ownership in the St. Louis Rams' NFL franchise. Joseph Kennedy quit the club when his son became president, as did Georgia GOP Senate candidate Guy Millner when he ran against Max Cleland in 1996.

But Raese's campaign refused to deny that he was a member of this club. Not only that, they refused to admit his membership as well. Rather, when The Huffington Post published a piece following up on Limbaugh's statement, a spokesman mocked the fact that there was no concrete evidence.

On Wednesday, a reader pointed to a bit of evidence. The United States Golf Association (USGA) keeps an online index of the scores that golfers post (at their own discretion) upon finishing a round. And when you type in Raese's name into the database, and select the state of Florida, only one course comes up: The Everglades Club.

Asked about the scorecards (Raese shoots a slightly better round than Limbaugh), the Raese campaign continued to refuse to say whether he belonged to the club, responding that there were weightier topics to address.

"[T]here are real issues out there," said spokesman Kevin McLaughlin. "It is widely believed that Gov. Manchin is under federal investigation for awarding no-bid contracts to cronies and using the state plane to shuttle his friends and political supporters around on the taxpayer dime, West Virginia unemployment went over 9% this month and Democrats are obsessed with this?"

McLaughin's complaint is not, necessarily, unfair -- though topics like these are standard political banter in an election's closing weeks. That said, the issue of involvement at the Everglades does get at a broader, legitimate point that has plagued Raese's candidacy; mainly, that he spent a large portion of his time in Florida's upper-crust social scene before running as an everyday populist in West Virginia.

Mr. Stein- how do you come to such an inflammatory conclusion? Mr. Raese played a whopping 9 rounds at this club over the past 14 years. Does less than one round of golf per year automatically make one a member?

Furthermore, don't you think it's a bit misleading to refer to this club as "all-white" in your title? You note yourself that a black member was admitted in 2008. Not to mention you have to consider the possibility that non-white, non-black members were admitted before that time as well.

Ultimately, this is such an insignificant non-issue, I'm not sure why you chose to waste print making a mountain out of this microbe. It's very frustrating to see politicians on both sides ranting over insignificant trivia instead of debating the real issues at hand. Consider this a charge to embody Ghandi's words and be the change you wish to see by contributing to civil dialogue across party lines rather than drawing extreme-yet-largely irrelevant conclusions based upon scant evidence simply because it supports your political viewpoint.

Er, slight misread about the no black members as of 2008. My apologies. But still, the point remains that there could be other non-white, non-black members. Regardless, playing race politics is such an easy way out.

I'd be more surprised if it came out that he was NOT a member of an all-white country club.

Do you understand how stupid it is to be afraid?

This is a story ... why?

Raese is a prehistoric old white man, who hangs with Rushbo and plays golf in a country club that discriminates against blacks.

I could have predicted that. Having heard and/or read some of Raese's public utterances, his behavior is no surprise. Like Rich Iott getting his kicks dressing up like a Nazi.

What really does surprise me is why we seem to think we defeated Fascism in World War 2. It is alive and well and seeping like raw sewage into the halls of Congress. If America doesn't care, it deserves what it gets.

Not only do they not care, it is what they want. What is even sadder is that some of the old WWII vets, and a lot more of their progeny, will vote for it.

There's a difference between a private club that does not allow non-white membership and a predominantly black church that non-blacks choose not to worship at. And for the record, that Church is not all-black.
05:24 PM on 11/02/2010
Right, and you're making the convenient assumption that the club in question does not ALLOW blacks. And for the record, that club is not all-white. Especially not if you count Hispanics.

Won't this just give him more street cred among the Conservative Culture of Corruption?

It already has the Teabaggers loving him.
08:19 PM on 10/28/2010
Wouldn't be surprised if the golf club actually wants to distance themselves from him.

He's that bad.

And there is no way in Limbaugh Hell this guy ever shot a 79.

His daddy left him his seat at the club just like his daddy left him his money. This guy is so disgusting.

On Sunday these people will gather to pray.

On Monday they will kick an uninsured, unemployed single mom when she's down.

On Tuesday they'll bible bash the gay community.

On Wednesday they'll protest a Mosque and demand repeal of the 14th Amendment.

On Thursday they'll hold fundraisers for Wall Street.

On Friday they'll oppress women's rights Read More... to reproductive choice.

On Saturday they'll protest big government on tax payer funded park land.

And on Sunday they'll rest and pray that next week God smites the poor.

Oh, dearest darlings who are NOT from the island of Palm Beach...the rest of America, white trash and welfare queens all of you....The Everglades Club is so exclusive that Joseph Kennedy, the little Irish bootlegger wasn't allowed to join. The Everglades Club gladly welcomes colored people to cook in the kitchen and, our Jewish friends are allowed to join the seperate but equal Palm Beach Country Club...You know how important it is to maintain proper decorum and the Everglades Club will ensure that everyone knows their proper place in society.
